Im in central Florida and appreciate this. I have two fig trees, but one is much worse diseased and fruits a lot less. Im thinking of taking out the one tree. That tree was here when I moved in. The new one we got was so beautiful and just recently this disease has taken over but I have plenty of figs that are growing and hope that it won’t interfere with their development.

If they are in ground in florida it might be root knot nematodes messing up your trees , they usually are not planted jn ground here, but there are exceptions I've seen them but those people usually know what they are doing and it's not just luck, but yeah I also alot of rust on my figs too Supposedly lots of compost will hold back the nematodes for a while atleast, also some rootstocks might help but it's hard to find anything published about rootstocks for figs in florida , I'm hoping that I can graft onto a moreton bay rottstock and use cluster fig as a interstem, but like I said it's near impossible to find information unless it's been monetized at some point , yes information is commercialized and if it hasn't made someone a fortune it's probably not published or well know knowledge

Every year I have the same dilemma..to spray or not to spray... So far I just do nothing. I do pull off the most infected leaves and the figs still keep coming.

I think I have sunburn and rust and water spots and yellowing and also some leaves are very pale. Too late now. Maybe next spring I'll test the soil, get drip irrigation installed, and monitor the pot soil temperatures.

Thanks for this. I’m just starting out with figs. I had a small patch of corn that got rust really bad. Obviously the disease is present. St. Louis is humid. Even though the corn was in full sun, it was bad. We had a week where it rained every single day for a week. The corn was planted very close together. It was a perfect storm.

I live in the Bay Area California and unfortunately my fig tree has it because the last couple of years the weather has been so crazy and it was raining when it was summer time couple of times and my poor tree got it and I have search everywhere online trying to figure out what exactly my tree has so thank you for showing/explaining that

Watching this video while waiting out a heavy South Florida rain storm. I noticed some spots on my plants this week after having almost 24 inches of rain the last two weeks. It really does come out of nowhere as my plants didn't have a lick of disease until all these tropical systems dumped this rain on us. My plants are single trunk or two trunk and I may just pluck off the affected leaves as I have numerous dinner plate sized leaves and hope some silica applied in my watering will help stave it off to try your preventative measures next year. Thanks for making this video.

I’m in middle Texas zone 8b and have had figs for about 7 years. Hadn’t heard of fig rust until last year. It beat down my fig tree last year 😩 We get some decent humidity after the rare summer rain. Then it spread to a cutting that was happy and healthy. Now I wonder if that cutting had it first since it was from California, buuuuuut the cutting didn’t show any evidence of the rust until a month or two after the big tree.

I do feel the same way to some extent. My fig trees are all under a canopy. They never get rainwater on their leaves. My fig trees' leaves are not rusty leaves.

Thanks for this Ross! My trees were great until I received a diseased tree from Pixie Gardens. The black mission was resilient enough to hold onto its leaves for long enough to keep infecting the new leaves that formed. Ended up spreading to all my other trees after a few rains. My VdB mostly defoliated. I figured I'm close enough to frost in 5b that they will all defoliate soon anyway. I just noticed it just started showing up on my better varieties but they haven't lost any leaves yet. Does it just keep getting worse until the tree drops all its leaves? Can the disease rub off onto your hands or the stem and spread that way too? It's probably best to isolate the worst trees and possibly sacrifice and manually defoliate them as to not spread it to your other trees and ruin the brix in your fruit.

Love all your videos Ross, my wife and I have really learned a lot about the benefits of early form setting for some of our other young plants that we hope are going to be vigorous fruiters in the coming years. I have a question for you about fig rust as applied to fig bushes versus trees. Would it be a fair guess that a "bush" style of fig may be more likely to be susceptible to fig rust due to the form of the plant and air flow/light penetration between the branches/foliage? I live in zone 8A (S. AL) and I've got two dwarf Violette de Bordeaux ("Little Miss Figgy") plants which came from the nursery formed as bushes and they seem to be the only fig plants I have showing signs of rust. (FYI, they've both been "quarantined" away from the rest of our figs once we confirmed this was rust). Both bushes are still quite young (second year tree cuttings formed into bushes I believe) and I think I would like to keep them formed as bushes to have some variety versus trying to rejuvenate prune them into dwarf variety trees--so would it make sense to treat my young fig bushes showing signs of rust via a fungicide or would it be more effective to address it as a micro nutrients deficiency by adding liquid iron/copper into the feeding schedule with a semi regular dusting of diatomaceous earth to introduce scilica to the micro nutrients list? Thanks for all you do!

When removing affected leaves with fig rust, use gloves and deposit the leaves in a bag to dispose of. Don't hold onto the leaves with your bare hand, else you might just end up with Fig Rash. (A burning, itching, blistering rash caused by the sap of the leaves and exposed to UV light (i.e. the sun).

Thank you so much for this video. I live in south Louisiana and my two little fig trees are suffering from rust so bad. I think at the start of next season, I’ll be able to get it under control. I’m going to use your suggestion about the silicon? I think that’s how you say it LOL. I’m going to rewatch the video and get it. Thank you so much for your advice, may our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with you and your family.
