I am one of those guys who has had an NL Fairlane, and won’t be saying I wish I hadn’t sold it. It is an extremely good car. Mine has 360,000 km on it, and feels really good. It is not only the things that this car does well, which is almost everything, it is also the things it doesn’t do including the useless alarms and other modern bits of overreach. It is so nice to drive in all situations, it is good around town, and exceedingly good on the highway with that big engine ticking over slowly and the cruise control on. Beautiful seats Air Conditioning etc. mine is on LPG which also makes it very cheap. The cupholders have never annoyed me, and the only thing that I wish it had was better lights for night time. I have driven many other cars and keep coming back to this car as an incredibly well made good looking Australian bit of engineering. Here’s a challenge. If anyone else owns one how many interior lights are there? There are over 13, but I’m not sure how many.

My eyes just about lit up seeing you'd done a review on one of these amazing beasts Ross! I am quite privileged to say I was actually given a standard 1998 Fairlane Ghia for my very first car last year. But mine is a little more unique than most as not only does it have the 5.0 Windsor V8, but it was also converted to run on LPG as well as Petrol (Duel Fuel), which is not that typical for a V8 car to begin with. My Dad gave it too me when I got my P's, it used to be his car. My Godfather also owned it prior to that and his Stepfather bought it when it was almost new. Talk about hitting the jackpot, how I got so lucky to own such an amazing car with those kind of family ties still blows my mind at times now. It needs quite a bit of work which I can't necessarily afford right now. But even if money wasn't tight, I wouldn't trade it for the world :) Keep these cool as reviews coming Ross =D

In the old days we actually had factories producing products, all around the main cities. Most factories had an office out front where the sales guys and general manager worked. In the general managers marked parking spot was parked one of these. Ford and Holden always had special deals for companies to buy bulk. Well all that is gone.
@MartinJones1232 жыл бұрын
But that's how they got their sales... Most private buyers would go for a Euro car because of the badge and frankly, better build quality... That's not saying these cars are garbage, Aussie luxo barges have much more character and are more reliable...

Another great review Jonny. When you did the O-1OOkmh test you must have had the gearbox set in Economy mode cause the 1st-2nd gear change was only just above 45OOrpm then hit 2nd and just bogged down. It could definitely do a better time. With the BTR 4 Speed they definitely need 4.11 diff gears and LSD to help with it's really tall gearing.👍
@ThomasFG2 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking that myself, because they're a high 8's low 9's. 4.11's are overrated in a luxo barge, 3.45's is where i'd leave'em at. Nothing else (Similar to the AU). That NL was definitely in economy mode 🤣 Peak power is well above 4500rpm. So she still had plenty in reserve. Normal mode under WOT i think they'll shift around that 5000rpm - 5100rpm mark
@victorpeirce47532 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasFG I had a stock AU Falcon Forte BTR 4 Speed auto in 99 with 35,OOOkms and it ran 17.5 1/4 mile at Willowbank. I then put on Genie extractors, a custom 3inch mandrel exhaust system and 4.11 diff gears and then it ran 14.5 every pass and on the highway at 11Okmh she sat at 2600rpm plus I got better fuel economy. More revs doesn't always mean it uses more fuel ⛽ I swear to God Ford should have used 4.11 diff gears on ALL of their cars that came with the BTR 4 Speed auto. It just makes them so much more lively and drive able.💯 %
@victorpeirce47532 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasFG If it was WOT why did 1st-2nd change at 46OOrpm then?..like you said even in Economy mode it should still change on redline if you have the accelerater pedal mashed to the floor. Changing from 1st-2nd at 46OOrpm just made it bog down and slow it's time down heaps. In POWER mode it should hold the gears just above redline before upshifting.💯 %
@ThomasFG2 жыл бұрын
@@victorpeirce4753 Because all the BTR basically did was make it electronic & add an extra gear lol GM did the same with TH400 which became it's own version essentially aka 4L80-E, however they had better gearing 1st - 3rd by far 🤣
@ThomasFG2 жыл бұрын
@@victorpeirce4753 No on them older Econ/Norm mode falcons economy short shifted regardless of how wide open the throttle was haha ! It was a piss poor effort to save fuel with such long gearing. A holden 3.8L can cruise economy all day long BUT they had leaps apart gearing compared to Falcon's

I'm more into old-school Fairlaines of the early 70s ZD and ZG Fairlaines I do not like the ZH front end would prefer HZ Statesman but in the 90s I'd definitely go for a VR/VS Statesman but the Fairlaines do look cool but alot of 90s fords are really not in the best condition today and if it's a V8 and clean makes it even better even a Clean 6 cylinder would drive price up because clean ones are rare
