@@dubmait Yes, because there isn't formal educations in "llanito" and Gibraltarians are being thought "proper English" and younger generations are influenced by American or British Television. Older folks grew up in a multilingual environment with local Spanish TV and education was in Spanish for some.

We could fix the relations between Gibraltar and Spain by making Gibraltar a fully independent state within the Commonwealth. Gibraltar could also maintain all its institutions, and it could join the EU if it desired. Simultaneously, Spain would no longer feel any grievance regarding Gibraltar.

I'm from Miami (where we have a lot of Cubans, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans whose ancestors came from Andalusia and Canary Islands). To hear this accent (in Spanish) which feels so close to me juxtaposed with a British accent which feels very far from me within a single person is very interesting.

Por cierto, parece que la población española original de Gibraltar abandonó en su mayoría el peñón tras la invasión inglesa. De modo que son menos los traidores de lo que uno se pudiera imaginar y es más una cuestión de una población mestizada de genoveses, malteses, españoles, británicos (incluyendo ingleses, escoceses, etc.) y otros. Es difícil querer encontrar lealtad a España en un popurrí humano ideado desde Londres.

Son gibraltareños británicos de ultramar rodeados de Andalucía ni son del todo británicos ni del todo andaluces ni españoles. Serán lo que quieran ser que es lo más justo pero tienen que reconocer que Gibraltar nace de una injusticia y no debería volver a suceder esto de ir colonizando lugares extranjeros y trescientos años después justificar que ellos pueden ser lo que quieran ser. Y las tierras que en el tratado de Utrecht no estaban deberían devolverlas, por qué las han robado.

Gibraltar is a very interesting place in which you can trace how an indentity rises. Between the IIWW and the close of the border (due to Franco) they realize that they were diferent. Until that moment the brits struggled to make the people talk in English but since then… It helps that they are a sort of tax haven so they have one of the highest GDP in the world…

My grandad was born in gib and identified as British. He spoke Spanish and broken English but would tell you he's British. I'm sure in war days he had an option to register as either Spanish or British and voted for us ✋️

Varias cosas indiscutibles. 1-España cedio Gibraltar en 1713.Lleva mas tiempo britanico que español. 2-España reconoce britanico el peñon,su fortaleza y las aguas del puerto.Gibraltar no lo respeta y pretende quedarse 3 millas de aguas españolas como suyas. 3-En 1815,Gibraltar sufrio una epidemia de fiebre amarilla.Los britanicos pidieron a los españoles instalar en el itsmo un campamento para la poblacion gibraltareña no enferma,España accedió en una cesión temporal por motivos humanitarios.Los britanicos jamás lo devolvieron. 4.En 1937,con España en guerra civil,los britanicos instalaron el actual aeropuerto en el itsmo,que nunca figuró en el Tratado de Utrech. Conclusiones: 1-Gibraltar es un pesimo vecino,que pretende expandirse en territorio que no le pertenece. 2-Gibraltar nunca sera devuelto a España.Pero España no tiene obligaciones para con ellos,no debe permitir que sus residuos se gestionen en un vertedero de Cadiz ni que sus enfermos vayan a hospitales españoles,sin pagar la atencion medica,asi como no enviar sangre desde el hospital de Jerez. 3-Gibraltar solicitó una tuberia conectada a la red española de agua,para periodos de sequia o averias en sus desaladoras,conociendolos,succionaria agua española.Nada de tuberias. 4-Si quiere paso Schengen,debe cumplir con las normas de la UE.Si se le concede,y previsiblemente luego no cumple su parte una vez conseguido Schengen,España,como estado miembro puede suspender Schengen,pues tiene potestad. 5-Prohibicion de que militares britanicos de las dotaciones de buques de guerra o submarinos puedan pasar a España.Es inadmisible que militares no identificados se paseen por España.Si son interceptados,seran retenidos e interrogados. 6-Los ingleses dan asco. 7-El Brexit es muy divertido. 8-Fomentar la independencia de Escocia e integrarla en la UE. 9-Cuando dentro de 25 años soliciten los brits volver a la UE,España debe exigir Gibraltar,o habra veto.

Gibraltar existe bajo el dominio de UK desde hace siglos, no combiene llevarse mal con los vecinos, ni conflictos ni nada de eso. respetandose uno al otro, hay familias unidas desde las dos partes de la verja, son solo conflictos que les importa a ambos gobiernos pero los que de verdad perdemos somos los ciudadanos de ambos lados. lo que hay que hacer es resolver y dejar claro son las millas maritimas que corresponde entre ambos y dejarse de incursiones estupidas para que los medios de comunicacion creen conflictos y nos mantengan divididos. Espana no tiene un gobierno preparado para eso, aparte que es el lameculos de la UE pedrito sanchez hace lo que sus amos de Bruselas quieren, Espana no tiene soverania ninguna, se puede colar cualquiera y no se puede deportar a gente porque la UE quiere mantener a Espana como el basurero de Europa. First, Gibraltarians are not a large population. Second, most people there do NOT speak Spanish fluently anymore - those who do are mostly in the over 60 crowd. The newer generations have been educated strictly in English and many of them speak little to no Spanish worth mentioning. Where you do hear Spanish from the locals, I wouldn’t categorise it as “fluent”, even for most of the middle aged people. The British are intent on wiping out the native Spanish legacy.

@@andros1000 I agree, but then the fluency may vary, only a few speak standard Spanish, what is mostly spoken is Gaditano dialect of Spanish, and then quite mixed with English. Any Spanish fluency they may have is also mostly spoken, not written.

Right now I'm doing a presentation to school about the variations of the english language and I got kind of curious about Gibraltar, because of its location despite being a part of United Kingdom but man... This was way more interesting than I thought! Because I also learn spanish, it was unbelievably interesting for me to listen to these guys just change languages in the middle of sentence. Gibraltar is only owned by the United Kingdom, it is not part of the United Kingdom that's why Gibraltarians do not have any member of the British parliament. Gibraltar is worth a visit, I went there 3 times, the last time I stayed there 3 nights. Education in Gibraltar used be in Spanish until 1939, when the World War II started, the British decided to replace Spanish with English. Only the younger generations can speak standard English properly, most Gibraltarians speak Gaditano Spanish mixed with English, Gaditano is the dialect from Cádiz region. The Gibraltarians are mix of Spaniards, Genoese, Maltese, British, Portuguese and Moroccan, their Llanito language was influenced by all these peoples that compose Gibraltar's society.

Gibraltar no es parte del Reino Unido, es una colonia ilegal de los ingleses en España. Es territorio por descolonizar y los ingleses se niegan a cumplir las leyes internacionales que les obligan a abandonarlo. Están ahí pisando un territorio español por puro matonismo, muy al estilo anglosajón.

Well, they speak with one of the most difficult accents that we have in Spain, western andalusian (and above all the one from Cádiz), so it’s kinda high level if you are able to understand them 😅 They speak RP english, but I think it’s normal due to it was manly a british militar settlement until four or three decades ago (it remains as a militar settlement but now it's mainly a financial center).

El problema de Gibraltar no es que quiera ser independiente de España. El problema de Gibraltar es que se ha comido mucho territorio español que no estaba en el tratado de Ultrech, actualmente no tienen terreno por donde extenderse y estan cogiendo territorio del mar... territorio que por supuesto pertenece a España. Por otro lado, la economia gibraltareña no puede vivir sin la economia española. Gibraltar es un grave problema para España.

I had the genuine pleasure of going to Gibraltar in January 2017, on my flight to Gibraltar, I overheard one of the passengers (who was from Gibraltar) being asked a question that has been asked many times by those outside of Gibraltar to those from the Territory: "why aren't you Spanish?" It's a question, I'm sure, that many in Gibraltar are probably bored of being asked by now, certainly this particular person just rolled their eyes and said "because we feel British,"

My daughter stayed in Gibraltar for 2 years and we have a Gibraltarian staying with us in LA now. Culture shock! Amazing friendly people with lots of energy and culture. Do not call their football “soccer”, do not call them Spanish, and do not pronounce it “Gibralt-er”. Working on traveling there but getting clearance for my pup first

Why are you surprised. Before the American empire we live in now, most of the world's strategic naval territories were controlled and colonized by the British Empire, in order to maintain their hegemony over global trade. You've hopefully heard of Hong Kong, Quebec City, Singapore, Suez canal, Cape Town. The Falklands also was the last habitable stop before turning around the Americas and the British made sure they controlled that too. The entire reason the British took Quebec and therefore ensured Canada was part of its Empire, was to control the St Lawrence seaway, at the time the most navigable route into North America and the Great Lakes

Neither Spanish nor English, but both at the same time (co-proincipality as for Andorra) could be a solution, no? And then between the two monarchies it would make for ceremonies that would look good. And don't forget that in Gibraltar they don't only speak English and Spanish, but also Llanito, a language that deserves to have an official status between the two most spoken languages in the world after Mandarin.

Gibraltar: Remains British? Becomes Spanish? Becomes a condominium; a bit like Andorra (but in reality Andorra has two fully honorary co-princes and is a fully sovereign state)? Becomes independent of its British trusteeship and does not come under Spanish trusteeship: a new Monaco or San Marino? Maybe a referendum will decide this, it's true it's up to the people to decide. I don't have the answer, but Gibraltar, in any case, is unique. When one of the speakers mentioned Petulia it made me think of the Navarrese enclave of Petilla in the heart of Aragon, Gibraltar is a kind of Petulia ... sorry Petilla outside the world. If Gibraltar were to become Spanish, in my opinion, the positions of Melilla and Ceuta for Spain would become difficult to defend against Morocco, some form of independence could rather suit everyone.

Ceuta and Melilla are territories older than Morocco itself as a nation. They were the consequence of an invasion of almost 8 centuries by North Africa, Gibraltar was treacherously taken by the English in collaboration with the Dutch just over 300 years ago, they do not even respect the treaty where they only have the use of the rock, they dedicate themselves to to create and occupy artificial land, occupy waters that are not theirs or enter into the treaty and cause problems for the authentic locals, the UK government takes advantage of its position to abuse and solve problems with environmental impacts in those waters, closer from Spain and much further from the authentic United Kingdom. disgusting.

And no, you can’t really enjoy both Spanish and English, as the English (“British”) government is busy as a bee wiping out all traces of Spanish language from public life in this piece of Spanish land, first, by making English the sole official language of government, the sole medium of instruction in schools, and then, by having this already percolate down to the newer generations speaking no Spanish, or speaking it only as an optional, “foreign” language.

The conquest of Gibraltar by an Anglo-Dutch fleet, in 1704, occurred after intense and unequal fighting between a few hundred defenders lacking artillery and the powerful allied squadron. The assault on the square took place on August 3, after a very harsh bombardment from the sea.

No fue una conquista, fue una cesión de un Borbón durante un tiempo determinado. Ahora los ingleses se niegan a abandonarlo aun cuando las leyes internacionales les obligan porque prohíben colonizar territorios de otros países.

@@mariad.a.842 España cedió Gibraltar al Reino Unido en perpetuidad mediante el Tratado de Utrecht de 1713. España también cedió Perpiñán a Francia en perpetuidad, pero de eso no te quejas. Los gibraltareños hoy quieren que las cosas sigan tal y como están. Es democrático respetar la voluntad de los gibraltareños.

@@joman563 mientes. El tratado de Utrecht de 1713 NO estableció una cesión a perpetuidad. Y desde luego tampoco se estableció que Inglaterra llenase de basura el mar español, ni que invadiese más territorio, ni que pudiesen acercarse submarinos nucleares.

@@joman563 Pequeños detalles: 1. Perpiñán no es una colonia de nadie. 2. Los términos del tratado que cedió a esa sección de Cataluña a Francia no han sido sistemáticamente ignorados por el país que hizo la adquisición.

Los verdaderos habitantes que poblaban Gibraltar fueron expulsados por los ingleses, por tanto que derecho tienen sobre estas tierras, ni uno, yo los llamaría a estos unos okupas.

Very interesting video. I must confess I don't know much of Gibraltar, except that it was once thought that there was nothing passed the pillars of Gibraltar. It looks like a vibrant and exiting place.
