Rossum (stadje tussen Maas en Waal)

Rossum. Een klein stadje aan de Waal op het punt waar Maas en Waal elkaar het dichtst naderen. Bij uitstek dus ‘het land van Maas en Waal’, waar Boudewijn de Groot over zong. Grootste bezienswaardigheid is kasteel Rossum. In de 19e eeuw gebouwd op de fundamenten van een kasteel, waarschijnlijk uit de 13e eeuw. Nadat het kasteel het woonhuis was van Baron van Randwijck, werd het een raadhuis en nu is het een evenementenlocatie, met een aantal bedrijfjes (je kunt er bijvoorbeeld een werkplek huren of je feest of vergadering houden). Vanzelfsprekend is de Waal een grote attractie, met de grote binnenvaartschepen op weg naar Rotterdam of naar Duitsland. Zeker met het hoge water dezer dagen oogt de rivier breder dan ooit. In de ondergelopen uiterwaarden van de rivier op een stukje grasland dat nog boven water ligt huist een kolonie Scholeksters.
Grappig is het huis met de krokodillen (wat verderop in de film).

Naturally, the Waal is a major attraction, with the large inland vessels on their way to Rotterdam or Germany. Especially with the high water these days, the river looks wider than ever. A colony of Oystercatchers lives in the flooded floodplains of the river on a piece of grassland that is still above water. The house with the crocodiles (a little later in the film) is funny. We were there on February 28, 2024.
