Those are my babies, spent ten yrs rebuilding the rotaries, flangers, and spreaders. Worked closely with Dennis and Lonnie!

Did they eliminate the steam systems on the rebuilt rotaries? From the videos I've seen of them, no steam is evident and they don't seem to have steam whistles.

@@evanstauffer4470 No, they went with a newer system. Can’t remember the manufacturer’s name. But yes they still have boilers onboard !

How many of rotaries have been rebuilt in recent years? The only one I knew of was number 207 in 2012-2016.

This is an answer from Lonnie Dickson, the manager in the video...since retired: At the time of the derailment there were several bulldozers working shoving snow over the downhill side about a half mile east of the rotary. Manager on the east rotary called them on the radio and asked for assistance and they came down and cleared the snow away from the rotary and the crew was able to rerail the truck that was on the ground. Prior to that the rotary on the east end was cut off with one locomotive and headed to Truckee plowing snow. Another snow crew was brought down and took the rotary and remaining locomotive to Truckee. down and took the rotary and remaining locomotive to Truckee.

The machines make their own music.

Don't wait too long to break out the heavy equipment. I spent 30 years fighting snow in the Rockies. If you are at 5000 feet elevation and the snow is getting deep, at 10,000 feet it's double or triple as deep. They waited too long before putting the rotary in service.

Is the 1899 Leslie Plow still on the roster? It was converted to 6 traction motors to power the wheel.

Very cool. Obscene amount of snow. Imagine spending that many hours working a historic piece of equipment while wearing your stupid high visibility vest 😂😂😂😂

SANTA FE HAD ONLY ONE ROTARY WHICH WAS KEPT EITHER AT TOPEKA SHOP OR ARGENTINE SHOP KCY! IT DIDNT GET USED OFTEN ! IT WAS AN DIESEL ELECTRIC WITH 4 EMD TRACTION MOTORS! ONE WINTER, WE HAD TO PUT HER TO WORK IN CENTRAL KANSAS ABOUT 1990! THE GUY THAT KEPT HER RUNNING WAS AN ASSISTANT DIESEL ENGINE SUPERVISOR, BUT HAD NO EXPERIENCE AND NO PAPERWORK FOR OPERATION! HE LET THE MANZEL LUBRICATION PUMP THAT FED OIL TO THE TRACTION MOTOR SUPPORT BRASSES, RUN OUT, AND BURNT THE BRASSES! IT WAS IMMEDIATELY SENT TO ARGENTINE, AND I GOT THE JOB TO REPLACE THEM! WAS AN BUSY TWO DAYS WORK BUT WE GOT HER BACK TO THE NEEDED AREA, AND BACK TO SERVICE! KEEP THEM ROLLING BROTHERS!! 👍👍

It's been at Topeka for many years now. As of early 2024 was still in the locomotive deadline on the east side of town. Very unusual 6 axle design, made from an old steam engine tender. ATSF 199361

This was interesting up to 34:05 when the UP guy (being respectful of community guidelines) called the railfans goofy. I guess they are the same goofy people that use their hard earned money to display UP merch. The only thing goofier is a pompous railroad employee

Agreed! Especially, from 37:52 to 40:09 it's all about the unique sounds of the rotary plow, but the music editors ruined it with a "dramatic" music overlay that obscures those unique sounds. I came here for the music of the machinery itself. If it were my call, I'd cut the music overlay any time we're hearing the machinery in action.
