Im constantly bewildered by how much people abandon favourable positions in favour of “manoeuvring”... happens every game, and its always at at the middle point where the fight is being decided... like... why

Limited map size, you have to cycle to prolong the distance since you are beaten by firepower. Reduced visibility would provide scout roles but you just push everyone in a corner and beat them down and whoever is left behind either do not provide the push forward or is isolated from the group. Prolonging the battle is only going to waste ammo. Your team will have 2x as much damage but actual destruction of mechs will be 0.5x of the opposite since your team is constantly hitting shields while the other team is hitting the sword arm.

I recommend using a King Crab for RAC5s. I've run 2 RAC5s and 2 LBX2s and it kills FAST! Now I'm running 2 RAC5s with AC5s and I think that's even better!

I wonder what a lance of Riflemen with RAC/5s would be like in a firing line? Or even just a lance of mechs with RAC/5s? It would be intimidating and disorienting to turn the corner and run into them...

You have just long enough to say "Oh shit, I'm dead" while the RACs spin up... and then you're instantly dismantled in a hail of bullets.

My buddies and I do something similar. We run a complete lance of Ilya Muromets, each with three RAC 2s, three medium lasers (or pulse lasers, in my case) and maximum armor. It poses a delightfully simple question to the enemy: How much damage can 9-12 RAC 2s do in the time it takes to kill a fully up-armored Cataphract? Typically it's quite a lot

Lance of Riflemen is actually a lot worse than lance of other RAC/5 mechs. Rifleman can't tank for teammates due to bad hitboxes and fragility and its arms are WIDE so it is always problematic to keep firing effectively and safely around your teammates. One RAC-Rifleman is ok, you can find a good spot for it, but even two are problematic. Bushwackers, Shadow Hawks or even Marauders are much better for that. You can stack them, MADs and BSWs are tanky, Hawks only need to expose a small part of the mech to fire, ie it is a lot easier to coordinate the lance without affecting the ability of one another to fire at once. Swarm of single RAC/5 Urbies is also pretty infamous for being dumb fun and surprisingly effective at once.

@@tutzdesYT - I have a Shadowhawk which is fun. I do not have a Marauder at this time, but will probably have one again in the future. I am looking to get a Bushwacker in the near future, cuz fond memories from earlier games. And they're sturdy. And when I say a lance to play with, I don't mean a lance of riflemen, just a lance of people to play with. :D

The damage of the RAC5s was severely degraded by something. In the first game, 801 damage dealt out of a possible 3585, in the second game, even worse: 787 damage dealt... not counting the lasers. Less than 25 percent damage output, either game. Range degrades damage, I know, but not to this degree. Something is wrong here.

Baradul, you are not following your own rules for 2nd line mechs and RAC's. try running XL,-2 heatsinks, add a Beagle and TC 2.

I run a RAC-5 Rifleman as well, but use the variant that allows 6 energy points. 6 MLs on top of RAC-5s scares the hell out of everyone.

I prefer 3 rac2s over 2 rac5s if you have the mounts. Almost the same damage, more range, and much more potential damage per ton of ammo.

I drop the lasers, and run a 235lfe on mine to fit 6 tons of ammo in. I decided to skip lasers to force myself to play more defensively as I tend to brawl with everything even when it is a terrible idea.

Your awareness in match 2 was rather lacking. You ended up wasting time shooting a DC, however you were lucky it kind of paid off in the longer run, as there was no real penalty to you for it.
