Rotary Broaching Brake

The broach brake is an alignment tool designed to help hold (clock) rotary broach orientation. Rotary broaches are ideal for making small hex, square and serrated holes in aluminum, brass and mild steel.
The broach brake can assist machinists who want to align a form to another part feature, remove a broach to drill out chips and the start broaching again, or broach a large form with multiple broaches.

I am having a hard time with this tool putting so much load on lathe that it alarms out and bearings in tool are shot running 700rpm and ,002 per rev . On my 3rd tool holder now and only run 20 parts . .506 diameter hole for a .502 broach . Need some input ,

Hi John. It appears that your pre-drill diameter is not large enough. For broaching a hex form your pre-drill needs to be 3% larger than your across flats dimension. It's not difficult. The top end of the breach is oscillating around its axis at an angle that allows the lower end to effectively remain true. This allows each corner to cut as it is pushed into the hole. I'm probably not making myself clear. They should really rotate the head slowly then what's happening is really obvious.

Rotary broaching. The tip of the tool is concentric with the hole, but the holder has nearings that set the shank of the tool offset. The spinning chuck provides the motive force to broach the hole. It is a wonderful process

It has a ball bearing. So, when the tool touches the piece it stop spinning. The rotary broach has this tilting movement to help cut the metal.
