A lot of people in general make the rotary seem like a paint eating demon, like if you touch the paint it will remove it to bare metal.. because they can't use it properly. You don't max out the RPM on a gigantic wool pad and swing it like a maniac with a chainsaw. Instead use slow RPM (1200-1400) and same arm speed as DA, and you'll find that the rotary cuts less than a long throw DA. People are afraid of holograms, which are easier to remove than DA's micro-marring, haze and swirls. If you use a really aggressive pad on a soft paint (sometimes its needed when the paint is heavily damaged) you'll realize that the DA will gouge the paint because of the whipping oscillation motion. Holograms are really shallow, uniform and easy to remove. Those pigtail scratches that DA leaves are way harder to remove, because when the DA goes one way, then it suddenly gets jerked the other, which creates a really sudden movement and acceleration and it makes a relatively deep scratch in the paint. Long throw DA's are way more aggressive than a rotary. I had 15mm and 21mm DA leave same swirls in the paint as if it was never polished, and that was really difficult to refine. Thanks to the uniform and smooth motion of the rotary, it's way easier to work on softer paints without the need of another, gentler machine, because you can drop your RPMs to around 600, lift off the pressure and go from there, while you can't really lower the rpms of the DA by much, because the rotational motion of the pad will stop. Also in my experience, you never can achieve this glass-like look with a DA, the rotary gives a superior finish thanks to how smooth it is. It glides on the paint instead of chopping at it, and that's why paint buffed with a rotary will always have that little something more to it. It's not a huge difference, but i can tell by the feel of the paint and clarity. Also the rotary won't destroy your joints with vibration, cause there is virtually none.

Actually fifteen years ago long throw DA machines were only one year away. I began using them in 2007. Well before the Rupes. However Rupes really evolved it. I prefer rotary and forced rotation but I do own a Rupes MK 3 15 as my team in the USA use it. It can do plenty of work and is efficient. A rotary in theory should be faster cutting but not always. But it's very difficult to do one step.

Rotary is by far the best but its for people that know what they are doing people that don't should use D.A..

I'm self learnt too and suprising enough I use the same pad and Koch chemie range. But in my experience the rotary is faster but requires more work. Yours looks amazing and really good technique. Any tips on how to keep rotary flat mines a 40 quid rotary weighs a Ton thanks.

Hi Sorry I missed the comment and didn't reply. I think the only tip for keeping it flat is practice! you will find that softer pads and finishing polish is easier to manage the machine than it is with harder pads and cutting compound. so I would practice a bit with the softer pads and then work unto the cutting, once you can keep a heavy cutting pad flat and smooth you will be able to work with anything.

Been detailing yachts for 22 years and use both my Makita rotary and a Rupes 15mm, love them both but Rupes will definitely finish better any way you cut it.

The dual action is where it's at now, save rotary for metal polishing, after all how thin is factory clearcoat ? too thin ! and lets not forget that the top part of the clear contains uv inhibitors so it's better to preserve as much of the clear as possible.

Not all the clear coat is the same mix of liquid before applying it? 🤔

Great no BS vid, just what you want. Am in the market for a DA polisher now the next question will be... Do I go 'Forced' or 'Free Spinning!' Thanks buddy!

i have rotary and 2 DA, 12mm and 15 mm orbit. rotary way faster in initial cut but to be honest its need along time to master rotary, when i try DA its very easy to gain same result as some youtuber detailer with same DA. for car enthusiast is more easy to operate DA for profesional detailer who used to live with rotary and paint shop worker rotary way better what i learn again is rotary need less agresive compound than DA for same paint defect.

Thanks for the contact...I guess what I meant was whether I would buy a ''forced DA' with a gear that will not stop under load, (not rotary) of just a 'free spinning' DA like most, that will stop under load... Decisions...Decisions... Cheers!

@@crookassassin i think for easy to handle DA is easier to use, i never use forced DA but now with Microfiber pad, wool pad i dont think Free spinning DA under disadvantage than forced rotation. But if we compare old small and powerless DA like porter cable or m3110 meguiars yes they alot worse than flex3410

sorry I didn't see the comment, thank you. I'm guessing I'm a little late to inform you but if your budget allows I would get a rupes machine or at least something that is the same type of design. these are free spinning with no gears.

I'm 25 years in bodyshops, you are correct 👍 using a rotary takes a long time to master and is far superior. Anyone that has the 'da is better' opinion are more often people that dont know how to use a rotary properly
@PrideandPerformance
@PrideandPerformance 3 жыл бұрын
Your both quite right and if you watch the video I’m under the impression the rotary is better too. This was one scenario where the DA was actually faster to the “same” result. No doubting the rotary is a better more versatile machine. I’ve been using one 20 years ish but the modern DA is a far cry from the DA that was available years ago. Basically the DA has continued to improve over the years. The rotary hasn’t really changed
@dbuckley100

@@PrideandPerformance Fair play to you for the reply 👍 your are right, the DA has improved vastly from what they were. I guess it depends on what level of polishing is needed, a regular ' bring a shine back' to a faded car or a 'cut and polish' 2 very different things ! If someone has never used a rotary before and wanted to machine polish their car I'd tell them all day long use a DA. A 1200,2000,3000, cut and polish on a newly painted car for a glass finish, DA just won't cut it !! Good content though pal, enjoy your videos 👍

@@dbuckley100 thanks mate. I really want to do more videos but I just can’t get used to being in front of a camera 😳 yeah of your bringing back paint that’s been flatted then a rotary is going to have to be used. Also the other advantage of a rotary is when working on tighter areas where a rotary will actually cut faster but a da will stall and not work at all. So it that instance you’ll need multiple da with different size heads etc. this particular job was only going 90-95% correction so surprisingly the da won out
