Joe Pie has been making and selling these for several years, he has a build video about four years ago plus various tips how to use it for different things. I guess not many American hobby machinists want to make their own and prefer to buy ready made if they don't trust their abilities? I notice you have extra clamps on mill vice, has it moved on you or does it help take out some of the 'twist' on Chinese vice? (I know mine is 0.004" low on right side, may try an extra clamp and see if things improve) I know I should really scrape it flat, but, that looks like a lot of work and I want to use it now, not 3~6 months time. 😁You need to make a stiffer longer keeper plate for your angle vice, I used a small 3/16" square of high carbon steel plus longer bolts. I also bored the pivot posts as they were about 0.060" different in height then bushed them for a tighter fit on pivot bolt (it wasn't worn and much easier to make some bushings)

@@EnglishHobbyMachinist 100% Aluminum is plenty robust enough material for this little tool. Those of us who are Hot rodders and custom motorcycle builders use billet aluminum for all kinds of things, including brake calipers, pedals, brackets, triple trees, etc etc....

Why does it need to be so wide? Would an accurate piece of round stock with a flat machined half way still work? Or maybe just a known size pin say 20mm and add / subtract 10mm from the required dimension. It doesn't really align the part or the vise, it just positions them in one axis which can easily be done with a pin in a collet. They still need aligning with the rotary table angle, positioning in the other axis and aligning with the machine axes. It's a solution looking for a problem.

Your idea would work, just a slightly different tool without the flat surfaces, I didn’t really give a full demonstration of its full use, have a look at joe pie channel, he gives a much better demonstration, which is where the idea came from, this is 15mm diameter by 15mm deep by 30mm across the long side, my thoughts are the long side has more surface area (30mm) for alignment of stock or vice and is easier to indicate off. 👍 Thanks for commenting 👍

@@EnglishHobbyMachinist Thanks Nobby. I see now, it can only work if you indicate the 30mm flat on your tool parallel to the X axis and lock the spindle. Then when the part is pushed against it, it's then aligned with the machine axis at the desired Y offset. It can't be clamped though as it it not yet set in the X axis. I'm still not sure how to keep the part square and set in the Y axis when moving it to the X axis position for clamping.

@@EnglishHobbyMachinist Thanks Mark. I watched the video and I see that this tool can't be used alone. It needs a parallel fence, taper parallels and a vise. If you have all these 3 items then I see no advantage over a precision hardened standard ground pin. Use the pin to set the vise jaw distance and then again as an end stop for the part. A nice thin line of contact, easily kept clean without any attention to the spindle orientation and easily checked for concentricity. The flat seems to add nothing to the function other than saving the mental calculation of considering half the pin diameter, a piece of cake in metric.
