I am 3 weeks post surgery tomorrow first time rt rotator cuff. I prepared by getting Burton up shirts a couple of sizes larger both short sleeve and long sleeve. I also use a tank top as a 1st layer instead of a bra and I step into it and pull it up. In the shower I use condiment bottles for my soap easy to hold and squeeze. I was told I could move my surgery arm from hand to elbow as long as shoulder stayed still. (Check with your Dr) pillows make sleeping easier to prop what needs support you or your arm. I found sleeping on my side with a pillow behind my elbow and under my hand so the arm doesn't shift. This helped to prevent the pain on the back of my shoulder blade area.for me sleeping in the recliner or sleeping with pillows propped up behind me did not help. I clipped a caribeaner to one of my plastic clips to help with holding keys and sling makes a great pocket for my phone. There was a 10 inch extra Velcro strap I did not know what it was for so I use it to help hold my hand in so my arm doesn't move forward in sling. I figured that out after the 4th day. I would definitely use that strap to hold your hand in while your hand is numb. I hope this helps anyone else getting ready for shoulder surgery

Here are my tips, not in any particular order. I had my right shoulder done 4 years ago and my left 2 weeks ago. Please ignore any typos since I am a terrible proof reader. 1. Get a second opinion. My injuries were worse this time and a general orthopod recommended anatomical replacement. I went to a shoulder specialist who noted that my joint was fine but had bone spurs and no space between the joint and the collar bone. I also had a snapping bicep tendon, a large rotator cuff tear and separation of the supraspinatis. I chose surgeon #2 and got the repair rather than the replacement. 2. If there is time, prepare as many meals for the freezer as you can. Store the food in containers that you can move around with your good hand. I made ham bone soup, chicken noodle soup, beef stew, two kinds of fish stew, 7 pounds of meatloaf, tamales, spaghetti, and many other dishes. If you can’t cook ahead, have friends, family or your church or social group bring meals to you. . 3. Buy or rent a recliner with electric controls on the non-operated side. This will support your shoulder as you heal. I didn’t have a recliner with my first shoulder surgery and it has made all the difference this time. 4. Get help with dressing. It us very difficult to dress and put on the sling by yourself, especially at first. 5. Get help with laundry. I don’t know about you but I can’t fold clothes with only one hand. Taking this further, ignore all housework or get someone else to do it as long as you are in a sling. 6. Find someone to help you with sponge bathing and to wash your hair until your wound closes. You can get in the shower if you cover the dressing with Saran Wrap, secured with masking or paper tape. But, I could only clean myself this way from the waist down. You’ll need help washing your back and under the non-operated arm. Keep the dressing totally dry and if it does get wet, change it immediately to avoid infection. 7. Stay ahead of the pain. Take your medication. I am in my third week now and would say that I only have severe soreness, unlike the unbearable pain that I had the first two weeks. Also take a stool softener at maximum dose but don’t expect “results” for a few days. Then have a strong assistant and a plunger handy, if you catch my drift. 8. Get an ice water circulator that runs the water through a pad that covers the entire shoulder and high on your arm. These are available at any medical supply store as well as on Amazon. Worth every Penny that you spend. Instead of putting ice in the reservoir, use frozen bottles of water- these last much longer than ice cubes and provide about 3.5 hours of relief. 9. Start PT as soon as possible and do all the work. 10. Find exercise that you can do without involving your shoulder. I started long walks with my dog at the 3-day mark. 11. Don’t plan to do anything for anybody until you’re out of the sling. Even when you feel better and are off the pain meds, you cannot drive. Good luck to you! Know that the two week mark is a turning point for pain, independence and exercise. You will get through this! My right arm is now perfect and I expect the left will be as well, in about 6 months.

I am 3 weeks in on my left rotator cuff/bicep surgery. Had my right done 2 years ago. Things I’ve learned: buy a recliner to sleep, I tried the slanted pillow but a recliner is the best. Use Press n Seal to protect your wounds/bandages to prevent them getting wet. I also bought cheap Walmart shirts last time and found a seamstress who added a strip of snaps - had new shirts made this time around. Put shampoo, conditioner and body wash in dollar store picnic ketchup and mustard squeeze bottles. If you take meds, buy a two week pill container and fill, refill as needed. Do not get lazy about icing your shoulder!! Make sure to flex fingers and wrists lightly to avoid elbow freeze. Loose clothes is a must - now is not the time to look cute. Buy a bathwrap, not bathrobe. Slip on shoes. Last tip: stay ahead of the pain - start your pain meds right after getting home from the hospital.

I'm a 48 year old male from Texas. 6'0" tall and 330 lbs. Its's June 25th, 2022 now. I had Achilles Tendon reattachment surgery in February and left rotator cuff and tendon reinforcement surgery on the 23rd (2 days ago). I am so glad I stumbled onto your video; was watching PT videos to see what to expect Monday morning (2 days from now). Number 1: YOU ARE CUTE AS A BUTTON!!! I don't use the word cute often, but it applies to you...for sure! Number 2: Thank you for the wedge idea. I have a Sleep Doctor wedge (the widest one they sell) from the Achilles surgery and never thought of using it for the shoulder recovery. Brilliant! Number 3: The tee shirt idea should win some kind of award! I love problem solvers and you, ma'am, nailed it! I cut a 3X tee shirt 6 inches from the bottom, and followed a straight line up/through the arm pit; leaving the shoulder untouched. It works, but it leaves a gaping hole for the pillow straps to constantly rub on my rib cage area. YOUR idea, however, allows access to incision points, like the hood of a truck; and eliminates the rubbing that my idea has. So.... you win the internet for a day!! 😘 🌟🌟🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🌟🌟 Number 3: your editing skills are fantastic and made this video easy to watch. Lastly, I admire your sincerity. It shows that you truly are interested in helping people and not just looking for likes on KZbin. I wish you success in everything you do (you deserve it!) and thank you for making this video! Ps, I would add that the OSSUR cold therapy system has absolutely saved my life with these 2 surgeries. You have to check it out. There are pads for shoulders, backs, legs, etc. Pricey, but soooooo worth the price!

Your videos were so helpful. I think I followed every tip you shared. I had been assuming rotator cuff shoulder would be the same as shoulder replacement. Wanted to let everyone know that replacement is much, much easier than rotator cuff repair. My rotator cuff was beyond repair so I got ‘reverse shoulder replacement’ (the socket is put into the place where the ball was and the ball into the socket’s old place). Your deltoid muscle takes over the function of the rotator cuff. Your love videos were the most helpful of any on the internet … so, thanks so much!

Great tips! I have had surgery on both shoulders (separately) and can relate to many of the things you have mentioned. I wish I had heard the shirt idea! I have a few additional tips to share: 1-Cryotherapy machine - these things are amazing! A friend loaned me one for my first surgery and I promptly bought my own. They essentially are a cooler that pumps icy water through a cuff that you place on the injury (shoulder, knee, etc.). They are much more effective than regular ice packs and was a life saver. I do recommend using block ice if possible to keep it cold longest. 2-practice use of non-dominant hand before surgery (if possible) - it is surprising how useless we often are with the non-dominant hand. If time allows, I recommend using the few weeks before surgery to practice tasks like brushing your teeth, or wiping your bum (sorry, for the sensitive topic), or even changing your computer mouse (I prefer the non-dominant hand now). Not always possible, but really helped me. Thanks for sharing your experiences and good luck with your recovery.

I hope you're doing well...I had surgery on my roto cuff October...VERY, VERY, PAINFUL 😒 But Well Worth It. I hadn't turned my head to the right in a year except from the waist... I'm So excited for next year...🤗🥰🙇♀️

Thanks for the tips. I just found out today that I've got to have rotator cuff surgery. Mine is completely torn & the ligament has retracted quite a bit so I know it's going to be painful and I'm not looking forward to it. I hadn't even thought about the fact that it's in my right shoulder which is my dominant arm/hand so it's going to be tough. My brother told me to start doing things with my left arm/hand so that I'll get used to using it instead of my right arm/hand. I'm worried about sleeping because I'm a side sleeper and I know I won't be able to sleep on my side for a while. I've logged onto Amazon today to look for post-operative shirts and you're right - they're crazy expensive so I'm going to do what you did and buy my own t-shirts to alter. Thanks again. I see that you posted this over a year ago so I hope you've recovered well.

Thank you so much for preparing this video. I'm going to be helping my 77 year old mom after her right shoulder surgery next week. I trying to think of every accommodation for her to help limit her pain and help in her healing. I will be making a few of the velcro shirts for her as you suggested and have a blanket in mind for her to use as a coat cape (she's a superhero to me so it's about time she get a cape!) I also bought a left handled bidet for her toilet because I feel that will be the most hygienic way to ensure she's able to keep comfortable and clean. I'm so worried about her being in pain and praying the surgery will be the answer to her months long agonizing pain. Thank you again for providing these helpful idea. Happy healing!

She is fortunate to have you. Best wishes to her as she heals. You may want to watch my Medications video. I talk about the ice machine (cryotherapy) that was SO helpful with pain control.

@@DarciaDarcy I am the fortunate one. 😌 Thank you! I will watch that video as well. She's very reluctant to take pain meds but this last week or so before her scheduled surgery she is in a tremendous amount of pain & has taken 1 or 2 pills. I trust part of her post-surgery recovery will include this device to help with inflammation & lessen pain. Many thanks again for sharing your experience and providing some helpful hints for those who may soon be on this journey as well. ❤

Ok 1 week post surgery today. Doing good. Past all the pain medication. Still icing several times day. The surgeon is happy with where things are, I go back next week to get stiches out and then on week 3 start PT. Dissapointed I’m going to miss out on most of the summer, but looking forward to getting past this. Thanks again your videos were most helpful in getting to this point!

Glad you’re doing well so far! I agree that ice is so helpful. I remember using ice for at least a month post-op, though I started using it less and less as time progressed.

Thank you for the link to the wedge. I just ordered one. I go in for repair of a complete tear on 10/22/20. I live alone, but my sister is going to stay with me for a few nights, then take me to her house after I recover a little more. My son's only about a half mile away, so will stop by to check on me after work every day. I have a friend who will check on me, but she's a single mom, so has her own things to worry about. Even my ex-wife has offered to help. My main concerns are showering, dressing and cooking. I'm guessing that some of the girls I work with will feed me. They take good care of me at work already! LOL!

Glad that link worked! I would advise you to just move slow and easy. It’s going to be hard to hurt yourself if you do that. No fast movements getting out of bed, or out of a chair, etc. I’m glad you have so many people to help you! Best wishes for a complete recovery!

How long should I have the ice machine on each time? Thanks!
@kathycurran32044 жыл бұрын
@@sharonlotto3765 I was told 15 minutes max to avoid skin damage because the pads are so cold. When I was in physicial therapy I was told 15 on/15 off, and never sleep with either a cold or a heat pack to avoid frost bite or burns. Read the directions carefully or call the number on the machine to ask any questions. I am really looking forward to using my cold therapy machine!!
@DarciaDarcy4 жыл бұрын
I think it could depend on the brand. Mine has a dial you adjust the cold settings. I also placed a pillowcase between me and the pad to protect against frostbite. Doing those things, I would leave it on for hours at a time...usually until the ice had melted.

I'm one of those "blessed" (big boobs Suck) women who really shouldn't go without a bra but I know I'm not gonna be able to do the whole clasp behind my back. Do you have any tips for bras?

A hook front stretchy soft jersey bra on Etsy and bought 2 sizes larger. It’s double layer so no show thru. Im really comfortable in it, I’m on day 12 after total reverse shoulder replacement so I have a bi more freedom of movement in the operated arm and I can clip this myself. I also had an old stretch pull on sports bra that I can with struggle pull up from my feet…no hooks or clips. I saw a Springrose adaptive bra on line which was front close but was $76 ….a lot….so I’m waiting. Retired and don’t need to dress up. Loved your video Darci!

Good tips are very helpful. I am in my 6th month of recovery ( July 23, 2020- Jan. 2nd, 2021 ) But, my advice is try and figure out just exactly how bad your shoulder is and compare it to your expectations and needs , like a job. If, for example, you have an office job, then it does not really matter , cuz you can be back to work soon. If, on the other hand you work at, Construction, Plumber, Truck driver, Factory production, etc., then you might want to consider a plan B, for time needed to recover, cuz this surgery, if bad enough, will kill your ability to work anytime soon. I had a large hole in my tendon sewn up, and 4 screws to hold the rest of my shoulder together, and i am beginning my 6th month of rehab, and still having some discomfort and pain, so mine was severe. Pray yours is caught and repaired early.
