Rothenburg on der Tauber in Bavaria, Germany was founded in the year 1170, and was a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire between 1274-1803.
For a time it was one of the 20 largest cities of the Holy Roman Empire
with a population of around 5,500 people within the city walls, and an additional 14,000 in the surrounding territory.
