Rott’s damped double pendulum exhibits two modes of motion: regular, linear, and predictable, the other is chaotic, nonlinear, and unpredictable.
When the frequency of the entire pendulum system is one half of the red pendulum, the two pendulums draw energy from each other at a slow periodic rate. The exchange of energy period contains many pendulum-oscillation periods and this motion reproduces itself with great accuracy.
When one pendulum oscillates with maximum amplitude, the other stands almost still and the process reverses itself as the energy passes from one pendulum to the other. This process, which is associated with low energy and small amplitudes, is linear, including the coupling effect.
At very large amplitude oscillations, especially when the pendulums have enough energy to overturn (high-energy initial conditions), the behavior becomes chaotic. Chaotic or unpredictable behavior is usually associated with sensitivity to the initial data. Chaotic behavior implies that two slightly different initial conditions give rise to solution that differ greatly, one of the defining features of chaotic dynamical systems.

Fascinating. Some fragments of the chaotic motion resemble the action of a trebuchet. To think that people figured this out, just by trial and error, in middle ages...

Thank you David! You made an interesting observation. Also, the potential energy stored in the trebuchet is transferred into kinetic energy in the projectile, while kinetic energy invested in the pendulum, propels it until friction stops the motion. Ami

Once you added spin to the system it can no longer be described as simple pendulum motion. It is now spin plus pendulum, a different situation.

hi! is there any where i could find a breakdown of the physics going on here? as in the equations and what values are being put into the equations...kind of a silly question but I really would love to learn more about this stuff!

HOw does the conservation of energy/inertia in the chaotic movement compared to that of a regular regime for a pendulum of same characteristics?

Great question. There is neither conservation of energy during chaotic motion nor regular regime with Rott’s pendulum because it is not a closed system. Over time, energy in the pendulum is converted into heat, sound, and air movement due to friction and drag. The motion of Rott’s pendulum is rotational and so we can consider the moment of inertia which is a measure of an object’s resistance to rotational motion. But again, Rott’s pendulum is not a closed system and therefore the moment of inertia is not conserved.

can i make this from iron..i am a metal worker and have a bunch of scrap metal..mostly iron...if i make all pieces correct size and they are all the same material will it work like this?...is it better if its very light like 2 milimeter plates or heavyer?

5-millimeter-wide iron can store more energy than 2 millimeter, so when you apply the torque manually, the pendulum should oscillate for a longer period before friction makes it stop. Otherwise, this should work well.

@@AmiVarsano As i said, if it actually works it would be perpetual motion machine. But this isnt the case since this toy goes slower and slower until it stops. Perpetual motion machine would not stop, or lose speed so quickly.
