For me, the song is about a men who is relaying on his 17 years old daughter for his daily task (my girl is super sweet, seventeen, no that ain’t a crime to me). She wants to leave the house because she is tired of being the "mom" of her father. For him, it’s just like she was dying (so mother, don’t you die on me). The family is very poor because the father don’t have a job, so the daughter have to work the night (so she won’t be called by her father) on small jobs. The girl did what she could to give her dad nice food, but because she was poor, she almost never got to do the grocery shopping. So, they had a lot of rotten milk. The men never liked the rotten milk and was always complaining about it. That was pissing of the young girl. The dad is pleading his daughter, saying that he will stop complain about the rotten milk ( rotten milk tastes good to me ). Melanie is making fun of it by saying "mama" each time she meant the father calling his daughter.
