Hey everyone! Today we have a tutorial on how to play the ZZ Top ballad Rough Boy, from the band's 1985 album Afterburner. Lots of super slick lead playing by Mr. Gibbons on this one. Good stuff to learn, with loads of ideas to borrow (or steal) to add to your own playing.

always wanted to learn this one. Tutorials like this used to frustrate the crap out of me because so much information came so fast I couldn't make sense of it and after days I would give up. 10 or 15 minutes of learning from your video and I could play it all the way up to the first solo. Great lesson, keeps me motivated to play more.

This will be very, very interesting. I remember asking you about this a while ago! However, the very last part of the solo is what I love the most. It's kind of hard to understand what he's playing. EDIT: We seem to play the solos similarly. For those who want to learn it, make sure to learn the pinch harmonics as well,. They are at defining part of the song, at least for me.

Hi, yeah i emailed Kelly a long time ago making this point and asking him if he would do some Wishbone Ash. He said they were just the type of band he wanted to look at (no other tutorials on-line) but as of yet he has not done so. The first 3 albums are really good with Argus being their best. The tracks you mention would be excellent to cover/learn.

when I first started taking lessons years ago, pinch harmonics seemed easy and I would get them even when I didn't want. Years of trying to play cleanly without extra noise and now I can't get one to save my life.

If you're looking for great guitar tracks that have been ignored by youtubers, there are plenty in the Wishbone Ash vault ;) Sometime World, The King Will Come, Persephone, and so on.

So Thank you very much Kelly🙂 Another couple you might want to consider is Eric Clapton's "Forever Man", and Men At Work "It's a Mistake" Surprisingly, not much out there on those either if any.

loved it. Got to learn some theroy too. For instance , when you said , BEG(454 ) notes on string on 321 and said E chord..I was confused. Thought the first note you struck would always be root and hence a chord with that name. Did a little more search and realised this is called the second inversion of E chord since in the sequence of EGB , we have B coming in second .
