Remember ladies and gentlemen, always ride the waves from bow to stern, as these are these are the most stable parts of the boat. Port and starboard are the weakest. Also, for inexperienced boaters, you may want to consider anchoring your vessel as opposed to driving to shore. Also, as a boster, you should be aware of all the distress signals on the water. In restricted visibility, use a flashlight and send 3 small blasts of light followed by 3 long ones. Regarding flares at night, you may shoot a parachute flare from a gun, which is the most effective type of distress signal, as it can be seen from very long distances and remains in the sky longer than any other related flare option. In the daytime, you may want to consider smoke flares and or displaying the distress flags from the international code of signals, which consists of an N over the letter C. Regardless of the time if day, a VHF radio on channel 16 (marine radio) can be used to signal for help. In situations that are not life threatening but can later result in potential danger, you must call "pan pan pan pan pan pan". This can be sent when your engine breaks down and you cannot fix the issue, or you are low on gas (you are responsible for the manner in which you use your gas, so don't always expect aid in this situation). In life threatening situations, plz call "mayday mayday mayday". These situations can include sinking, or medical emergencies etc....... I've been boating for over 30 years and I'm obtaining my ferry license. There is a lot more detail I can provide, but for a regular pleasure craft operator, this is pretty much all you need to know in order to understand the boating fundamentals. All good stuff, but remember something else about that anchor--even if you are not in shallow water, if you loose power, tossing out the anchor NOW can keep your bow into the swell, in seconds, you can go broadside to the waves--and lights out. A "sea anchor" can be rigged and ready--which works in deep water even better than a standard anchor--just a bucket and rope--that alone beats nothing. The other key: be ready--after you lose the motor is no time to start rigging things up, they should always be ready so you can deploy them in SECONDS, not minutes.

Rule 1, make sure you vessel is capable, rather than a ten foot tinny with no additional buoyancy under the seats, two oversized grown ups, with no back up engine and a lowered transom scoop - for god knows why, if the answer is to fit the outboard then get one with a long shaft and first and foremost, ignore this video.
