Georgian here… I love North Dakota! Thanks for posting. ❤❤❤❤ I am amazed by how fast the tractor goes and then stops on a dime when the baler is full ! AWESOME!!

The problem with regular balers is there's only so much power you can shove through the PTO because of the torque and shear standards. The HD large square balers use the inertia of a flywheel to get more umph into the plunger but the tractor still has to replace that by spinning the flywheel back up. Krone has a design that uses both hydro flow AND PTO to power up a baler with a hydraulic low end booster on the system to get the wheel spinning and keep it from stalling. The old Hesston/Massey units down in the south-west that have on-baler engines are true beasts because of this. Self-powered Freeman 3-string not-so-small balers really hammer out bales too.
@boristhebarbarian Жыл бұрын
As a non agricultural schooled person; is there a lot of power loss in a PTO? or is there a maximum limit what it can crank out powerwise? Is either of those because there are 2 seperate units in a towed baler versus a selfpropelled unit? Isn't the engine in the selfpropelled ZR5 doing the same thing; powering the vehicle and the baling system just in 1 unit?
@MrT79shakeshake Жыл бұрын
@@boristhebarbarian there’s no inertia issue on a round baler so it’s easy enough driven that issue mentioned above is large square balers due to the working principle.
@boristhebarbarian Жыл бұрын
@@MrT79shakeshake So round balers have a more steady workflow in their workings due to continuous compacting instead of squarebalers push-release (like an automotive engine)methode? Have the squarebalers only been more market dominant because of moving and stacking the bales then?

Theres another ZR5 in south central north dakota, sometimes see it going during the summer about 4 miles east of my farm. Vermeer has gotten extremely popular in the last 5 years in the region... normally see usual guys running JD or NH balers all their life, and all of a sudden they have a Vermeer now.

My son just purchased a 605N. It was impressive. I was baling wheat and was curious about how fast the baler would bale. I'm baling with a JD 8300. I was up to 12.7 mph and according to the monitor, I was dropping a bale every 55 to 56 seconds. This baler was impressive. I started out with a 605C. I owned a 605G, 605J, 605SuperJ , 605L.

But we don’t have a Vermeer dealership around here so very interesting video Mike! Thanks!

Be interesting to see if they ever go to 4 wider belts on the chamber the way Deere and agco have gone. They seem to be a big improvement. Also would be interesting to test against a pull type round baler with a true CVT/ hydrostatic type tranny in a 200 plus horse tractor like a JCB with an operator who knows how to run it. Also interesting if Vermeer ever intends to offer a 4 ft wide bale chamber for the self propelled.

@uritepper15673 ай бұрын
hi, nice machine, you show it nicely, but..... what I don't see is how much is left at that speed?? does the pickup have enough time to feed in all the hay properly? does the rotor speed increase/decrease with the driving speed? you have to leave the land clean to get the highest possible yield/ha.

I wonder if putting tandem axles on the self-propelled baler would make it a smoother riding and lower ground pressure. The tires would need to be smaller.
@tomhill4765 Жыл бұрын
When I first saw that bailer hauling butt down the field I was amazed. Time is money. Speed it up by increasing ground speed, eliminate manual function by using automation and you have a winner.
@donmedford2563 Жыл бұрын
The self-propelled unit is a very impressive machine but I have questions. How is it able to operate so much faster than a pull type? You mentioned that it can bail at up to 12mph. How fast can you go when using the pull type? Also how did they make the wrapping/unloading process so much faster? I think the big square bales are more efficient. No need to stop to unload and no wasted space on the truck when hauling them. Are there disadvantages of square bales I do not know about?
@quadg5296 Жыл бұрын
the round bale is the more efficient bale. from a farmers perspective. They hold more volume than a similar sized square bale. so you need to create and move fewer per field. and they are easier to create from a mechanical perspective. so round balers are smaller, cheaper and cheaper to operate, than the big square balers. people tend to make square bales for customers and contracts. but round bales to use themselves.

Our neighbors bought one. I got to ride in the training seat for a few rounds. This hay field was not leveled in any way but the ride was really good in my opinion. On the pull type baler an overhead view shows the 2 belts on the left have 2 belt end connectors instead of just one like the others. Is that a belt repair connection? Just curious. Amazing how much faster the self-propelled unit is. Great video.
