As late as he was to the scene, this sums up Norton's character completely: strolling in, expecting everyone to be happy to see him when they despise him, and flagrantly violating the tables rules by leeching off his friend assuming he can charm his way out of it. What a parasite.

On top of that every mannerism describes worm perfectly. He makes a comment about avoiding this low life activity and then heads to go get some compped noodles. Worm also loves to drain every single penny out of a situation and is greedy. Notice that soy sauce bottle he was literally going to dump it all in the soup. This foreshadows his greed when they play with the cops.

Even in the next scene when damon and norton are eating. Matt's character thinks edwards' brought him to the restaurant to pay him back the money he borrowed, Matt's character is a good guy and tries to tell Edward Norton's character he can take his time to pay him back. Meanwhile, Edward Norton's character cuts off the conversation to explain his next scheme (insinuating he never even thought to pay him back).

I think this scene does a good job summarizing the dynamics at a typical casino poker table. It's like the ocean there, are recreational players (fish) and experienced winners (sharks). The sharks tend to avoid each other and focus their attention on the fish. If you can't spot the fish at the table, you probably are the fish.

Just realised Knish and Worm on Mikes shoulders at the table, like an Angel and Devil
@dantaboo

Love this scene and this movie as a whole -- but I just realized something. Even though this wasn't a romance movie, I noticed there was more chemistry between Mike and Petra than Mike ever had with his girlfriend, Jo. In fact, there was no real love between Mike and Jo. Petra has always been sweet and lovely with Mike while Jo was always cold and critical. My theory is that Mike was so obsessed with the game of poker that he doesn't realize he was in a loveless relationship with Jo but he also didn't even realize that he had a potential soulmate in Petra, who also seem to be share the same interest as him. Their scene in his apartment watching Johnny Chan at the WSOP on TV was another interesting point. This is validated by the fact that Mike was also in a toxic friendship with Worm, whom he thought was a real friend who almost had him killed, but he also didn't see the real friendship with Joey Knish, who acted more like a brother than Worm ever did. This is pretty ironic from a guy who can read complete strangers in card rooms but can't even read the people closest to him. Rounders might be a deeper movie than we thought!

maybe i watched a different movie. Mike never shows an ounce of interest in Petra. and he rejects her like a friend's desperate kid sister in his apartment, which is probably the way he's always felt about her since he never responds to any of her flirting. and Jo was "cold and critical" when Mike was messing up, which was pretty much the only interactions we saw between the two. gambling was a vice with Mike similar to if it had been women, drugs, alcohol, etc. and we know Jo saw this vice ruin him and she wasn't going to go through that with him again. since we can assume she was with him through the darkest time of his life and didn't want him to return, they had to have had a strong bond to go through that together. so imagine her disappointment when at the beginning of the movie he expresses his admiration for the vice with the judges' game. like he was about to get tugged right back into the life. and of course he did. doesn't mean their relationship was loveless before, we just didn't get much of a chance to see it because he messed up so early.
@dantaboo
@dantaboo Жыл бұрын
@@whitedevil2 Granted, I understand from Jo's POV why she was so "disappointed" with Mike and we're witnessing the end of their relationship, not the "honeymoon" phase of their relationship so I feel some symphony for Jo, even though she knew exactly what kind of guy Mike was when she met him. Losing his entire bankroll probably killed whatever trust she could have for Mike. As for Petra and Mike, I read the original script and Petra was actually Mike's ex girlfriend from the past, hence why he rejected her kiss from the scene. My theory is simple: Mike has the uncanny ability to read anyone except the people who are closest to him. For that, he's blind and clueless. Someone also said that Teddy KGB's tell with his Oreo cookie was too obvious for a player like Mike to miss in the beginning. The thing is, Mike knew Teddy and he was blind to him as well. In the end, when Mike finally realizes Teddy's tell, it was like Mike can finally see everything so clearly. That's just my take on the film.

I was at the Taj when they filmed this scene. Took a break from getting my ass kicked at the craps table and went and relaxed in the Keno room adjacent to Taj's poker room. It was approximately, 3-4 am. I remember sitting there wondering what was going on. I was under the impression they were filming a commercial. Never noticed any of the actors in the background, just the "grips" checking and repositioning equipment and the "gaffers" checking and realigning the lighting. Seemed like a lot of time, and a lot of standing around goes into the "movie making process". It wasn't brought to my attention that it in reality, it was the process of filming a movie scene with some real fine and talented actors until weeks later. I couldn't have cared less that night to be honest with you, I lost about $1000 on the craps table that morning.

This is accurate. At my local casino all the regulars know each other. We'll still try to win, but it's so much easier winning money from a player we haven't seen before. Sometimes I'll fold a pretty good hand if I see a couple of other regulars interested in the hand. It's not collusion, but playing smart. Pay attention at any table on which players are chatting friendly with one another, and especially players who arrive together. Also, if you see players arrive dressed in suits, chances are very high they've just come from a conference and 90% of the time have no idea how to play.

I don't play poker anymore but there was a time when I wanted to see how good I could be so I played as much as I could (I had a family and a job with overtime so my playing time was limited). I remember this time in limit hold'em where about 5 player were in the pot and all rounds were being bet to the max. I had a small flush and got out (I don't remember if I made it to the river or not) and was shocked when a small straight won the pot (and by the way, the player who won also seemed shock that he won). I suddenly realized (I was so freaking naive) that some of those players were playing together and were betting to drive other players out or to make the pot bigger in case that one of them "hit" and I felt so stupid because it had not occurred to me that people would be doing that and that there is no way to consistently win when people are colluding against you.

They really are not "scamming" anyone. The only edge the sharks have on regular joes is 1. they of course have a ton of experience and 2. They are not afraid of losing money or betting.. But the sharks who always claim luck has nothing to do with it are always fooling themselves. Someone gets a big hand, they get a big hand. And fish make money on fish. I only play very rarely and I have won plenty at casino poker tables. They all would consider me a fish, and I am, but I still won.

it's not fair n square when they're colluding. if every player was for themselves, sure, but admitting they're actively trying not to feast on each other is pretty darn close to a scam to me. if you colluded like this in a tournament people would freak the fuck out.

@@johns783 That is a good point I guess. What’s he say? We’re not necessarily playing with each other, but we’re not playing against each other either. The big guy big said “if we wanted to take each other’s rolls we could have just just home.” That implies that the entire goal of going to Atlantic City was to feast on the fish, but when all the regulars from the Chesterfield showed up it basically just turned into their regular game except for the odd fish that sat down every now and then and they all got wiped out pretty much immediately.

With the right hold cards, and flop, turn, or river, ANYBODY can felt even the best player in the world in a one time sit down. There's a common bit of poker etiquette that I completely disagree with. It says "don't hit and run". If you win big early, you're not supposed to get up and leave without giving the other players a chance to win their money back. Eff that. If I'm at a table full of pros, and I run good and build up a stack, I'm cashing out and quitting with a nice profit. If those two guys won big, they'd need to take their winnings and go, The longer they stayed, the worse off they'd be.

I love the idea of this movie...that poker is full of sharks in casinos... but the reality of it (at least in Detroit) is that it's full of drunks and people there with the adrenaline addiction of sucking out on a straight "f-it" gamble the run those tables...lol 200-500 games play like $.50 limit poker at the dog track in Sarasota back in they day....no foldem' holdem. lol no poker geniuses...just gambling addicts looking for their highs I used to like playing there but since they made the bad beat jackpots at all the casinos harder to win than the actual lottery, I don't bother so much any more.
