As late as he was to the scene, this sums up Norton's character completely: strolling in, expecting everyone to be happy to see him when they despise him, and flagrantly violating the tables rules by leeching off his friend assuming he can charm his way out of it. What a parasite.

On top of that every mannerism describes worm perfectly. He makes a comment about avoiding this low life activity and then heads to go get some compped noodles. I think this scene does a good job summarizing the dynamics at a typical casino poker table. It's like the ocean there, are recreational players (fish) and experienced winners (sharks). Just realised Knish and Worm on Mikes shoulders at the table, like an Angel and Devil
@dantaboo2 жыл бұрын
Love this scene and this movie as a whole -- but I just realized something. Even though this wasn't a romance movie, I noticed there was more chemistry between Mike and Petra than Mike ever had with his girlfriend, Jo. In fact, there was no real love between Mike and Jo. Petra has always been sweet and lovely with Mike while Jo was always cold and critical. My theory is that Mike was so obsessed with the game of poker that he doesn't realize he was in a loveless relationship with Jo but he also didn't even realize that he had a potential soulmate in Petra, who also seem to be share the same interest as him. Their scene in his apartment watching Johnny Chan at the WSOP on TV was another interesting point. This is validated by the fact that Mike was also in a toxic friendship with Worm, whom he thought was a real friend who almost had him killed, but he also didn't see the real friendship with Joey Knish, who acted more like a brother than Worm ever did. This is pretty ironic from a guy who can read complete strangers in card rooms but can't even read the people closest to him. Rounders might be a deeper movie than we thought!

maybe i watched a different movie. Mike never shows an ounce of interest in Petra. and he rejects her like a friend's desperate kid sister in his apartment, which is probably the way he's always felt about her since he never responds to any of her flirting. and Jo was "cold and critical" when Mike was messing up, which was pretty much the only interactions we saw between the two. gambling was a vice with Mike similar to if it had been women, drugs, alcohol, etc. and we know Jo saw this vice ruin him and she wasn't going to go through that with him again. since we can assume she was with him through the darkest time of his life and didn't want him to return, they had to have had a strong bond to go through that together. so imagine her disappointment when at the beginning of the movie he expresses his admiration for the vice with the judges' game. like he was about to get tugged right back into the life. and of course he did. doesn't mean their relationship was loveless before, we just didn't get much of a chance to see it because he messed up so early.
@dantaboo Жыл бұрын
@@whitedevil2 Granted, I understand from Jo's POV why she was so "disappointed" with Mike and we're witnessing the end of their relationship, not the "honeymoon" phase of their relationship so I feel some symphony for Jo, even though she knew exactly what kind of guy Mike was when she met him. Losing his entire bankroll probably killed whatever trust she could have for Mike. As for Petra and Mike, I read the original script and Petra was actually Mike's ex girlfriend from the past, hence why he rejected her kiss from the scene. My theory is simple: Mike has the uncanny ability to read anyone except the people who are closest to him. For that, he's blind and clueless. Someone also said that Teddy KGB's tell with his Oreo cookie was too obvious for a player like Mike to miss in the beginning. The thing is, Mike knew Teddy and he was blind to him as well. In the end, when Mike finally realizes Teddy's tell, it was like Mike can finally see everything so clearly. That's just my take on the film.

There's a common bit of poker etiquette that I completely disagree with. It says "don't hit and run". If you win big early, you're not supposed to get up and leave without giving the other players a chance to win their money back. Eff that. If I'm at a table full of pros, and I run good and build up a stack, I'm cashing out and quitting with a nice profit. If those two guys won big, they'd need to take their winnings and go, The longer they stayed, the worse off they'd be.

@@CrabbyOldLady I heard about that. Its called, "Going South", and it is supposedly a big no no in the poker world lol. There was an episode of "High Stakes Poker" where Daniel Negraneau and Johnny Chan accused Freddy Deeb of doing that, and BOY was Freddy offended at the accusation lol.

I love the idea of this movie...that poker is full of sharks in casinos... but the reality of it (at least in Detroit) is that it's full of drunks and people there with the adrenaline addiction of sucking out on a straight "f-it" gamble the run those tables...lol 200-500 games play like $.50 limit poker at the dog track in Sarasota back in they day....no foldem' holdem. lol no poker geniuses...just gambling addicts looking for their highs I used to like playing there but since they made the bad beat jackpots at all the casinos harder to win than the actual lottery, I don't bother so much any more.

Nah when this movie came out the Taj was full of grinders. Of course there were gambling addicts here and there but they came and went. The regulars lived at the Taj just feeding off tourists the casino attracted for them daily. It was a feeding frenzy for the most part

That ain't "scamming". That's just skilled players beating unskilled players. BTW, poker pros laugh at the line about how "we're not playing together, but then again we're not playing against each other either." Oh, yes they are playing against each other. Every hand.

It's better for a good player to look and act like they've never played before.....not a beginner.
@johns7833 жыл бұрын
there's always a chance. not a good one, but a chance. in the short term, like a single session, luck can play a factor. doesn't matter how you 'act', coolers happen, suck outs happen, and all ins where there's a 5050 chance to win all happen, and if the beginner is on enough of the winning side in a given session, then they can book a win vs anyone.

No. Going up against a pro poker player is like going up against a pro anything. Imagine playing high school football and then getting shoved into an NFL game. All the looks and acting isn't going to save you from getting pancaked.
