Cinematography, in the very beginning was outstanding! I’m really kind of glad that cape caution was underwhelming. It was unbelievable how flat the water was absolutely amazing. Your footage was absolutely breathtaking. Can’t wait to share this one. Thank you so much for the editing, and all the beautiful footage. From LIZ in California.⛵️🤟🏻💜😎🐬🇺🇸

Awe thanks so much! We had fun with the intro :) Definitely prefer a calm crossing over a stormy swelly one! It can get pretty hairy there if you attempt to round during in the wrong conditions. So glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much for sharing!

Anything charted as a Cape is especially worth respecting. These aren't ordinary points of shoreline which extend into the sea. They're especially noteworthy places where weather and seas tend to concentrate. They may or not look like anything remarkable on the charts. They may not seem like anything remarkable on a quiet passage. But let the weather get up, and then they will become formidable. These place names are not always romantic. Some are forcefully, seriously pragmatic. And Cape is one of them.

Very well put. You could have written the voiceover notes for this one! Our second run around the cape did not go quite as smoothly, we’ll be sharing that later this week

Yes we were just checking out the sailing spots in desolation sound this summer. The one thing we noticed was the weather forecast never lined up with what we observed. Usually it would say 10-15 it's and end up 25-35 or something. But there are a few books that talk about the weather there and how it's influenced so much by land masses. So next time out there I want to learn how to get the weather forecast and then apply it with respect to land masses nearby, mountains, channels etc.
@AllisonandJamesSailing Жыл бұрын
Totally! Our experience being in the inlets this summer was that the wind is largely to do with inflow & outflow air movements relative to the mountain range (would assume the same for Desolation sound in around Burke/Toba). The weather forecast models were only helpful to know whether there was a high or low pressure system moving thru.

Just started following your story this week. I've binged from the beginning. I voted on the Young Cruisers Awards, but I think Emerging Channel was the only one I didn't vote on because I was late to the vote and hadn't viewed any of the up and comers channels. Too bad, because you definitely would have got my vote. But, you've got my sub because I'm very much enjoying your channel. Great to see the Beautiful BC coast from your perspective. Keep it up!

Great video. Just curious, but now that you're into your second season with the Catalina 30, are you starting to get the urge to get a larger boat, or are you still happy with this one?
@AllisonandJamesSailing Жыл бұрын
Thanks Ern! We're happy with the Catalina but starting to feel the urge for a boat that's a bit more 'capable' for the sort of sailing we're interested to do in future

My wife and I have watched and enjoyed your videos along the central BC coast. One thing I really like is how you make your track lines (showing you destination), you seem to keep them clean and simple. I've been trying to find a draw app (or something) to do similarly to what you did when you showed your path around the Cape at 2 min 38 sec into this video. I make my videos on CyperLink and see that they advise doing an overlay like this in a PIP. However, I'm not able to find a good draw program that will get the path correct. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Ty.
@AllisonandJamesSailing10 ай бұрын
Hi drgraham, thank you for watching and enjoying our videos! We played around with a few different ways of showing our routes on the charts but ended up settling on the simple line drawings on screen grabs from navionics. I’m unfamiliar with Cyperlink and how that program runs. We use the adobe suit of programs and edit our videos in premier pro. Adobe has made all their programs integrate really seamlessly which makes it very simple for us to animate the track lines onto the charts. All our chart grabs get animated using adobe after effect (an animation program) and then they get rendered back into our timeline in premier pro. I believe they call this function dynamic linking. Here’s a video on how this function works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn3WlKirqr5jsM0si=HUi0zs9FuHJVImvd Hope that helps mate!

Would it be possible to sail the inside passage without an engine?
@AllisonandJamesSailing4 ай бұрын
The Race to Alaska does it every year! But most of the time they sail on the outside and use some human/pedal power to get through the rapids. It’s a tough place to be a pure sailor.
