Overshadowed by Ella Fitzgerald. Not that Ella was better. But Ella had a terrific agent/manager, perhaps you've heard of him -- Norman Granz -- who happened to also own a record company -- Verve Records -- with guess who as its top star -- yup, Ella Fitzgerald. Together they were a jazz team hard to top from the 1950's onward. Norman did all of Ella's top bookings for concerts, nightclubs, special appearances, etc. All Ella had to do was SING. Sarah was a wonder, but she just didn't have the right representation and manager Ella had. Makes all the difference in the world.

After recently recording the vocal to God Bless the Child as a Chadwick Boseman tribute, I started to look for a version done by Sarah Vaughan, but have not found one yet. She probably sang it Live somewhere. If anyone finds it, kindly let me know; would love to hear it. Perhaps she stayed away from it in records because it was so intimately connected to Billie Holiday? Maybe...

Personally I don’t think she’s that nervous. Just a little magician’s trick. She wants to feel out the audience so she starts just talking while she cases the joint, only to pull the rug out with her voice. The clumsy rambling allows for a more gripping introduction of the tune

That's because back then - actually up until a just a few years ago, relatively speaking - singers had to be able to really sing or everyone knew they were crap. Now any untalented stump can be a pop star since apparently not too many listeners can hear the obvious twang of autotune.

When she speaks here to the Swedish audience in 1964, she peeps like a nervous schoolgirl, but, from the very first note out of her mouth, we hear a consummate professional, a confident, brilliant, collected, musical powerhouse. They didn't call her "the Divine Sarah Vaughan" for nothing. And, working seamlessly along with her brilliant trio (Kirk Stuart (piano), Charles "Buster" Williams (bass), and Georges Hughes (drums), she produces the kind of singing that sends shivers up your spine.

@rakadoni84034 жыл бұрын
@@thesimplepeachify yeah I know, she was referring to a sore throat, I still remain unconvinced it's a fever since many other performers sweat just the same because of the energy they put into their performance and the lack of air conditioning. Just have to agree to disagree :)
@mistertibbs22804 жыл бұрын
Nah she was sweating because of the wig she was wearing under the hot studio lights. When you're naturally prone to sweating profusely in heat, this is exacerbated by wearing a wig. Watch her 50s performances before the fashion for wigs emerged in the 60s and she doesn't sweat like this. From the 60s when she began wearing wigs she was almost always soaked in sweat when she performed. Same with Ella Fitzgerald and more recently Whitney Houston. It's the wigs under strong studio/stage lights that caused the sweating.

Tammatha Billings, I concur. The inimitable Sarah Vaughan was exquisite. She was blessed with prodigious musical talent, and equally admirable class. Have you ever heard her play the piano? She was a very skilled pianist, as well. She was intelligent, talented, witty, kind, and unpretentious. Sarah was from an era that has sadly passed: Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Rosemary Clooney, Eydie Gorme, Dinah Shore, etc. Most of today's vocalists can't compare to these lovely ladies - in talent, elegance, or humility. There were no gimmicks, sideshows, vulgarity, or controversy. They just gave us the gift of their sublime voices.
