Immigration brings different cultures together - but how integrated are our communities? Has multiculturalism in the UK and Europe failed?
London, like many places in the EU is an ethnically diverse city. An example you might say, of cultures living side by side in relative peace. But that doesn't necessarily translate to togetherness and some take the view that segregated ethnic groups are a problem.
At the Roundtable was Philip Wood from the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations at Aga Khan University; Lee Jasper, human rights activist and adviser to the former Mayor of London; Human rights activist, Heena Khaled; And Senior Correspondent for the Sunday Times, Andrew Gilligan.

Roundtable is a discussion programme with an edge. Broadcast out of London and presented by David Foster, it's about bringing people to the table, listening to every opinion, and analysing every point of view. From fierce debate to reflective thinking, Roundtable discussions offer a different perspective on the issues that matter to you. Watch it every weekday at 15:30 GMT on TRT World.

The level of copium in regards to the grooming gang incident in justifying and downplaying it, despite it being an issue that was downplayed and an example of racially targeted grooming, in of itself proves that multiculturalism and multiracialism have both failed. The more difference you add to any society, the more divided its sense of interest and shared identity becomes, as you have to desperately attempt to consolidate and integrate those diverging interests without enforcing tyranny in doing so, which is a rather futile endeavour. Its like telling people to not criticise those for wearing/not wearing a headscarf, whilst suggesting that we honestly believe in letting people do and say as they please. Its a contradiction in of itself to try to enforce a core culture and racial identity in any nation whilst being apathetic to ones own identity to afford the inclusion and maximise the sense of difference over shared similarities. The continued promotion of multiculturalism in of itself is simply being covered up as a mistake at this point, despite there is no proof that the effort to promote multiculturalism was to begin with an endeavour that was targeted at helping the host of any nation, rather than exploit and undermine its sense of common interest and identity. Its more plausible to believe looking back that this was never the goal of multiculturalism as it was never put forward to the locals as a point of conversation until it had already been allowed by the government to take place. After that the goal was simply to silence and downplay the criticisms until it reached the point where the failings of multiculturalism were too apparent to hide, so had to be answered for by those that promote it. The rationalism given here is a meek attempt at consolidating an argument in favour of it by using whimsical language that on the surface appear to aspire towards a greater sense of shared humanity, but when applied in a global context are not truly about equality. Otherwise we would discuss differences in population size as part of the issue regarding equality and our share of responsibility in an overpopulated planet. Not just issues such as what we individually consume, but the number of consumers we are encouraging to come and aspire towards the same level of consumerism without first addressing their overpopulation issues within their own nation. Spilling off a reserve population into another nation is not a sign of sustainability and will inevitably erode green spaces beyond the conflict is has generated. There needs to be a holistic approach that addresses and resolves these issues together that is critical of the mistakes and honest about the oversights and plausible motive that we have in promoting the values that we do based on how they may benefit us.

Some areas in Coventry and Birmingham you wouldn't believe you are actually in Europe. I went to London a few years ago and heard people speaking English just a few times in about 7 hours. Isn't it obvious that when multiculturalism is practiced within countries it leads to competition and division as different peoples and cultures have different and sometimes incompatible goals and values? I mean, they say that "diversity is our strength", but what kind of strength is it really when our nation's people end up living in parallel societies?

If the simple disagreements in this debate are anything to go by, it's a good indication of how futile this attempt at a forced acceptance of an ideology is. Multi-culturalism is simply a euphemism for the displacement of local communities and cultures. What is the point or the need for it? It's difficult enough for countries within Christian Europe to deal with migration within Europe. Now throw in race and religion from outside of Europe in to the mix that refuse to adopt Western values and norms, but instead insist that their cultures exist alongside and in opposition to European values, and it's bound to fail. Why are European and Western nations the only countries dabbling in this concept? I'd rather say, why bother? Who needs the aggravation and headaches?

The locals were never asked, they were simply taken advantage of and shouted down and being racist for pointing out that their land and not just resources were being taken and occupied by competing interest groups, yet a significant number of the same quote on quote minorities(whites are a small global minority, some variations of white being even more-so) exploit and distort the nature and scale of historic exploitation to justify an even larger form of racial and cultural conquest. This is a clear indicator and form of vengeance shaming to inflict upon the weakest of minds, and will not be rebutted or denounced even by the most moderate among them in a significant enough scale to stop this due to fear of being out-grouped by their own people. That is why the only people whites should ultimately trust are those among themselves that promote and represent their group identity, and are not cowed by the multicultural narrative that even goes as far to consider white interest an exclusive evil, yet does not hold other group identities to this extraordinary level of prejudice towards a group identity.

@@alongsleep In reality multiculturalism only adds yet another dimension in which to fight over. Land, resources, and reproductive access are the age old points of interest competing tribes, groups, and individuals fight to possess to perpetuate and secure their existence, even if it means outcompeting and replacing others, in the same way that business and companies compete with their competitors on lines of competing interest. Resources and the world itself is finite so what you secure for yourself in the land of other peoples may be to your benefit but it is a net loss for those you are acquiring resources from. So equality in representation is a convenient way of dressing up the undermining of competing group interest to one's own. Sharing and giving more to those that are outbreeding you will not secure peace, only appeasement whilst one is outbreeding the other. When China begins to 'multiculturalise' Africa the African peoples will soon be complaining about immigration, as people only complain about something when they are affected detrimentally, and downplay what they do when they affect others detrimentally. Its called selective confirmation bias.

The benefit system was not so generous too, so that helped to keep the chancers and pisstakers away. It was when Tony Blair basically allowed anyone through the front door and massive numbers that it failed big time. Ungrateful, entitled so-called refugees were let in, criminals as well. Multiculturalism has the potential to wreak havoc on a nation. Even in a monolithic cultural setup, conflicts are bound to arise-be it over politics or religion. However, racial differences take the cake in terms of tribalism. Allowing people to self-segregate and carve out their own exclusive enclaves resembling places like Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Algeria is a recipe for disaster. This laissez-faire approach to immigration leads to what Americans aptly term "white flight" in many neighborhoods. Social cohesion takes a nosedive, and once the streets are molded in this manner, identifying with the British identity becomes an uphill battle. If a strong racial divide or religious bias prevails, where someone views you primarily as a white man, an infidel, or a goy rather than a fellow Brit, it's a detrimental start for social trust. The result? A diminished sense of patriotism, reduced investment in local charity, and a decline in the commitment to protect one's country, whether as a soldier or a police officer. But the worst consequence is the depression it creates in people living in these "safe havens". This can lead to the most tragic forms of death, such as suicide or loneliness-induced premature deaths. Feeling like an outsider when engaging with the broader world of England or its history, and being perceived by locals as colonizers who steal resources and recreate their homelands in burrows, intensifies race tensions and hate, creating a toxic environment. This is why there's an increase in gangs, often comprised of boys of immigrant origins harboring resentment towards native people, whom they see as more privileged. If you are unwilling to integrate immigrants, and you are indifferent to the speed, quantity, or origin of their arrival, you will be left with nothing more than a corporate hub rather than a country, devoid of any specific ethnic or cultural ties that once defined a nation. Individuals will embrace a more cutthroat and selfish mentality to survive, mirroring the trends observed in America.

It only works if the cultures are more or less in line with each other in terms of religious ideology. This is why Europe did not have borders because whether you were from France or Austria or Italy, the value systems were largely in line with each other and thus integration was natural. When you have diametrically opposite religious ideologies then it's inevitable that there will be a clash. And the stronger and less accepting ideology will dominate the more accepting one (Muslim vs Christian). A Christian woman in a Muslim country will be stoned if she does NOT wear a hijab in public (the less accepting culture) vs a Muslim woman in a Christian country will be ACCEPTED! THIS IS THE PROBLEM!

The left is always keen to point out 'what or when is this golden past that the right wing nationalists purport to harp back to ? IT DOESN'T EXIST!' But, as in the opening vt, follow up their observation of the 'rise of the hard right' with stats on population percentiles. For instance their acknowledgement that Barking & Dag has gone from 80 to 49% white British in just 10 years. If you want to ask us 'when was this time period you speak of where white people felt they belonged in these cities and white culture was predominant?!' Well there's your answer. Go and visit in 2001, or better yet 1901, and then tell us we're imagining British history with rose tinted spectacles.

I think single-cultured societies can end up restricting their citizens' worldview, but it goes without saying multiculturalism can result in the dominant culture's values being lost. London wouldn't be London to me anymore if suddenly every non-Brit disappeared. Half of my family is non-white, and they're already integrated into society. As another user pointed out, you can go to London and hear little English spoken... How is that even justifiable? Forget the tourists, you get enclaves of minority communities who frankly refuse to assimilate. Look at Bradford and Birmingham. Lots of Muslims want Sharia Law here. They don't care about the country and the culture, and frankly that specific subset doesn't belong here.

I don't think 2 separate cultures can live together in peace but I do believe that cultures can merge into a new one. Look at Hong Kong, a mix of Chinese and British culture forming a new one. Or how some migrants have integrated aspects of their country's culture into our own. The first British cafés and chip shops were founded by Italians. Or how the Roman Empire took aspects from Greek and even Middle Eastern culture into there own. Diversity on its own doesn't help anyone, but the offspring of that Diversity can do good. After all Britain was founded by 4 separate countries to create one and look how powerful it was until we chose to divide ourselves again.

European countries have a different history than America's vis a vis multiculturalism and assimilation. There is no doubt that America's economic, military and cultural dominance are due in large part to our ability to both assimilate and engender tolerance between differing cultures. But America has had a head start in dealing with racism that most European countries have not had. I think multiculturalism, the melding of the world population is inevitable and those struggling against it are fighting the tide of history.

I have always had a curiosity of what the world would be like without any form of multi-culturism anywhere on the globe, no mixed species being born (we are one race just different species of that race). Just a curiosity of what the world would be like where white keeps to white, black keeps to black and other ethnicities only breed with their own type.... would the world be odd or better ?

@@jaywest3734 It wouldnt to those with nothing to lose due to demographic superiority and gene dominance on their side I am sure. In the end genetic differences will manifest unequally and this is openly embraced and encouraged by some black and brown supremacists that openly call for a browning world. Its funny because the same people clearly wouldn't be in favour of the reverse happening, as that would as they know mean being colonised by white people yet again, but this time would mean being racially targeted to the point of near or complete replacement given enough years of continued migration as the current projections predict, as opposed to simply being targeted through resources as European colonialism admittedly did partake in.

Looks like people are confusing a multi-cultural society with a multi-racial society. It's obvious that different races can live together. However, they can only do so harmoniously if they basically share core values and core cultural behaviours. How many immigrants can say they're happily part of Britain's in/famous pub culture?

Diversity renders people devided in opinion's never uniting to work together. On top of that, multicultralism of tolerance doesn't work and it never did, nor never will work, but multienthicity does. Never confuse the two for the same thing because in multiculture you are changing for other cultures and in multiethicity, you remaining the same, but you welcome other races in mutual respect given they give that same respect in return. Multiethnicity works because its foundations are built on respect, not servatude. The question remains. If someone sucks up to you, do you respect them or see them as lower than yourself?

It’s partially true. Brazil was able to accept and integrate so many different cultures, colors and beliefs. But, we were invaded from the begging, as a colony we didn’t have any other option. Brazil has big structural issues and racism against people of color. Everything from Europe or white supremacy is unquestionably accepted because it was imposed.

Poor Europeans, those Muslims are hypocrites, I'm from a Muslim family and a Muslim-majority country and I learned Quran in childhood, in the Quran, there's a verse saying "O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies-some of them are allies of one another. Whoever of you allies himself with them is one of them. Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people." So can these Muslims explain to you how can their culture live side by side with other people's culture when they are demanded to hate them? I'm not here to defend the UK, I'm Egyptian and the UK colonized and committed massacres against my people which I'll never forgive but I'm just defending the right and the truth.. I know from my country's history since ancient times that immigration was preceding every falling of Egypt, that's why I'm against it in my own country from other foreigners who share a religion with us.. but Europe is beyond. it's not just different races it's different cultures that are hostile to each other at their core but no one is speaking because everyone is afraid to be accused of being Naz! or far right.. well I think what's worse than Naz!sm is destroying your own society and diminish your culture and race by your own hands, it's a naivety

Considering America has been multicultural for its entire life as a nation. Multiculturalism has done the opposite of fail. Elon Musk was Born in South Africa the CEO of google was born in India. Having an inclusive national culture is important. Honestly if you want multiculturalism to be dead than we might as well fight world war three right now. The more separated you make people the less they will care about the people not in their group.

Europe could be considered different from New World countries, which were anyway dominated by non-white populations. Morally, the North and South Americans, and Australasians can't have the same claims as Europeans. White Europeans who live in Europe have a stronger point against multiculturalism since they are indigenous to that place. Of course, there comes arguments like what about the colonial atrocities and literally ruining of the civilization in India etc. by the British which is the main reason why there are Asian immigrants in the UK in the first place.

That's where your wrong brother! USA is a massive Country that has enough space to keep people separated and peaceful. USA suffers from severe Tribalism that is only growing stronger every year. There are 562 native american tribes with their own culture/Lanuage(Dialect). That is not including Native Hawaiians(My people), Samoans, Tongans, Chamorro, Marshallese, Carolinians, Amish(German ultra conservative that speak a german dialect), Alaskan Russian Old believers, Hmong, Karen(Burmese), New Englanders(Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine), Irish-Scot(Appalachia mountain people), Cajuns(White french-swamp people), Scandinavians(Montana, Wyoming, North, and South Dakota, Minnesota). These tribal thinking people are growing in numbers very quickly that is causing division which is going to cause political tribalism or even Tribal warfare. This is the cherry on top...the rise of paganism. So there are about 600 tribes that are going to be competiting for power in the near future and the decline of Christianity in North America.

multiculturalism is still a hot topic in America. Tensions and conflicts existed since the day this nation was born. America can develop its own culture and national identity in the first place is partly because majority of ancestors were came from similar cultural and religious backgrounds(Black salves from Africa totally forgot their own culture and adopt the new one almost completely ).

It's absolutely ignorant at to say that White people were moved out because of immigration. If you put a microscope over Tower Hamlets, East London you will see that the English white people or indigenous people started to move out from these areas and started to move in counties such as Essex a key of-Spring of from traditional east London heartlands. They moved out because these areas were very poor and one key aspect of this was the closer of the docks to Essex towns such as Tilbury. Immigrants came to Britain for a better economical life and with the departure this created a vacuum. A vacuum which has been filled by Asian immigrants tithe point a tipping point has occurred in which the whites are now a minority in these areas. The vacuum was first created by the departure of White people.

“Multiculturalism” in Europe actually means Segregation, due to the lack of a cohesive set of values that defines the European continental, cultural landscape... other than Whiteness and being Christian... it’s hard to change, but we’re all human right? So what’s the big deal with losing a culture if the one replacing it brings life, youthfulness and vitality? That’s natural selection, right? What is the European birthrate? Sexual activity in Europe certainly isn’t a shared value. How can White people complain about multiculturalism when they’re the only ones not procreating? Not that other groups are not intolerant, but the move beyond post-colonization is what is being negotiated. Multiculturalism in its true sense does not mean any one culture dominates. It means all cultures are accommodated for within a set of values. That’s why being American is so new age. We have the same social challenges as Europe but they are defined differently here and frankly our Constitution is designed to help its citizens realize Freedom. England, specifically, is trying to leave the EU, which means they choose not to adhere to any potential set of values that could be shared around the entire continent, but Brexit is about England trying to escape its own federalist trap... Despite all that dominant society tries to do, it is the subject of the empire who always influences the definition of a sovereign state. Tell me your thoughts. Let me know if you think I should start a KZbin channel...
