Our boys are working as cab drivers in Chicago when Tod saves an arriving passenger at Grand Central Station from being hit by a runaway luggage cart. A friendship starts and we find out the guy has just come out of jail after 32 years! With Tod driving he looks up his old haunts and friends and finds out his mob scene has all disappeared and things have completely changed. He is nowhere and has nothing, really - except for a trunk.
It is kind of sad seeing the old-timer gradually finding out his world is completely gone. Even his old flame has aged!
Good directing, and good acting by the veteran Luther Adler.
The Chicago Grand Central Train Station at 201 West Harrison St opened in 1890, closed in 1969, was demolished in 1971.
The Hotel Metropole was actually at 2300 S. Michigan, and not at the address they mention on the show (2812 N Wabash). Al Capone actually ran his businesses here from rooms 406 - 410, as his headquarters. The building was demolished in 1975, and an apartment building built there.
The Four Deuces Nightclub where the mob hung out was at 2222 S Wabash. Prostitution, gambling and drinking were rampant in this vicinity. This place really existed in Chicago's South Side Levee and was still standing as a housing building during the show's filming but has since been torn down ca. 1967. The location is still an empty lot today.
Director: David Lowell Rich
Writer: Lawrence B. Marcus (as Larry Marcus)
Cast: Luther Adler (1903-1984, "movie Golden Boy"), Frank McHugh (1898-1981, regular on "The Bing Crosby Show"), Bruce Gordon (1916-2011, regular on "Peyton Place" and "The Untouchables"), Glenda Farrell (1904-1971), Jack Hollander (1918-1988), Ted Gunther, Harold Gary (1906-1984), Tom Carlin (uncredited) (1948-2010)

Beautiful story, all the ambiguity of the mythical Chicago of the 1930s, summed up in this old man out of time ... Luther Adler is admirable (I remembered him in "House of strangers" facing the monumental Edward G. Robinson). Funny to see just for a while the Frank Nitti (Frank Gordon) of "The Intouchables". Thanks, too bad for the image which is really bad. - Between us, If I could ever have had George Maharis as cab driver, I would have stayed in the cab ... for life.

The 1960s, and shows like Route 66, offered such an interesting mix of actors from the silent era (Conrad Nagel, Buster Keaton), the 30s/50s Golden Age of film (Sylvia Sidney, Frank McHugh, Glenda Farrell), and the up-and-comers (Robert Redford, James Caan) - among so many memorable guest stars. We'll never see anything like it again.

Luther Adler and his sister Stella were the two surviving exponents of the Yiddish Theatre. There's an argument that the Yiddish players were indispensible in teaching film actors how to act.

The Adlers made some history in the theatre. They were members of the Group Theatre and they were in the original run of Clifford Odet's "Paaradise Lost." Luther Adler went on to films andran up a lot of credits in this period in Television. There were at least two in "The Naked City." One was "The Man who Could Not Cry." He played a lawyer on a down spiral. His much younger wife miscarries their child and dies. He cannot accept it and goes insane. He races around New York raising money to fill up her hospital room with flowers so his wife can revive. In desperation he finds a floating crap game where the players bring guns to the game.
