This time we strip the lathe even further and sort out some dodgy electrics.
Then out with the soldering iron to modify the display header connector.
Then out with the hand file to modify the lathe front panel.
Then out with the CNC machine to cut out a custom encoder mount.
Now we wait for the next load of parts to arrive . . . .

I noticed (and personally experienced) the difficulty in removing the 5 way Dupont connector from the Key & Lamp PCB. On my second attempt (don't ask) I found it easier to remove the piece of plastic supporting the base of the pins and the carefully bend them through 90 degrees (or a little more if your housing is tight on space.

I am currently on the same project for my Amadeal 290V which a little different to yours. I am interested to know where you sourced the pulleys and belts from. I must thank you for the fact of driving the encoder with using the toothed belt directly from the spindle gear which saves a lot of work installing an idler gear to emulate the arrangement that was on James Clough’s lathe. Thanks Dave Hudson

For the belts and pulleys I bought them from eBay. Search HTD5 pulley and belts. They come in various widths, 5,9 and 15mm I think. Maybe buy a belt and check it meshes OK with the existing gear before you buy the other parts. Good luck with it!

You could easily fit the sevro motor on the tailstock side..as long as it is connected to the leadscrew your good to go..seen several other people and servos to the tailstock side on CNC conversions..maybe use a love-joy coupler etc..

As you are screwing the ELS panel into the Warco at about 30:19, it looks like the PCB is bowing from pressure on the right angle 0.1 header from the plastic bracket. The right angle 0.1 header on the control panel doesn't really need to fit between the PCB and the 3d printed bracket. You could have instead flipped that connector around and had it stick out out the back of the ELS control panel, and it would have removed that pressure point and prevented that bowing.

Good idea. I just followed James' instructions but looking at it again that would have been better, thanks

One thing to consider, if you mount the servo inverted from how James had his, your lead screw might go in opposite direction.I follow his channel too but honestly can't remember if he has provision in software to invert direction based on mounting orientation of servo. If not, I assume you can accomplish the same thing by changing how the servo is wired
@routercnc9517
@routercnc9517 Жыл бұрын
It’s a good thought and yes there are several ways to invert it. There is a gearbox on the front of the lathe for mechanical feed direction, the servo has dip switches for direction selection, and I’ve not looked yet but the software for the servo probably has a setting. So a good catch but should be OK.

Soooo good! I have a Chester DB10 which is a very similar machine (not 3 phase motor). And have seen some of James’s awesome videos, (have the Clough42 control box etc). But will be following the rest of you videos esp as your in the uk 🇬🇧 same as I am. Have you considered reproducing/selling the parts you’ve fabricated? I for one would definitely be interested in purchasing a set as the quality of your work is fantastic! 🤩🙌 bobby

I was shouting at the screen for you to fit the buttons, I'm surprised that didn't work. I'm really surprised how bad the original wiring on the lathe is, mechanically it looks good but it seems far less thought was given to the electronics. When you consider the price new that is very disappointing.

Hello, I am back on with exactly the same project, can I ask where you got the t5-40 pulley from with out the pilot bore. they all seem to have 8mm bore which is too big for the encoder?

I keep thinking about it and then wonder if I will really make use of it. That probably means.it will be like my lathe - wasn’t sure I had enough use for it and now would not be without it! Do you have experience of any particular model? I wouldn’t want to spend too much in case it gathered dust, but then need to pay enough to get a good one! Also there seem to be a wide range of materials and printer tech like heated bed, twin nozzle and so on.

@@routercnc9517 I can tell you for certain you will get a lot of use out of it. They honestly are unbelievably useful. I would order a Creality Ender 3 V2 Neo. A perfect first machine and print in PLA+ you’ll be making functional parts in no time!

Might be another option to mount the servo motor on the other end of the lathe and drive the leadscrew from that end?
@routercnc9517
@routercnc9517 Жыл бұрын
Yes I wondered about that too but I wasn’t sure about having the motor so far away and having long cables because the only place for the enclosure is to the left of the lathe. Also I think it was awkward to get a pulley on there. Good suggestion anyway.

It’s the integrated servo.that I think James ended up with: Servo Motor - NEMA 23 Integrated Easy Servo Motor 180w 3000rpm 0.6Nm(84.98oz.in) 20-50VDC Brushless DC Servo Motor Item No iSV57T-180 It arrived yesterday from Stepperonline and I just opened it to check it. Also ordered 48V 8.3A power supply. I’ve also ordered an eBay RS233 to USB cable to connect to my workshop PC to tune it. Haven’t tried it yet and hoping it will communicate as some of the cables said ‘chip inside’ and some did not. We will see!

I ordered this one which I think is the same as James used Model: S-400-48 It is overkill for amps at 8.3 but there was not much price difference for less amps. James also needed to drive a tool post grinder so he went with a higher spec.

What software version are you running?
@routercnc9517
@routercnc9517 2 ай бұрын
Do you mean on the CNC machine? That motion control software is called UCCNC. I installed in around 2021 and the manual shows it to be software version: 1.2111. If you mean the software version for the microprocessor code uploader (Visual Studio??) into the TI board as part of this ELS project I used the exact same version James showed in one of his videos. I tried the current version at the time when I built mine and I could not get it to work. So I re-watched his videos and downloaded a the same legacy version as James and that worked fine. Of course because he made this a few years earlier that was the latest version for him a the time. It was too long ago and I can't remember the exact version but watch his videos and you will see it when he installs the code developer software and hooks it up to the microprocessor. If you meant something else, please let me know.
