25 day sail across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco, California to Hilo, Hawaii, as part of my journey around the world without ever using motorized transport. Watch the whole journey here: • Around the World Witho...
2160 Nautical Miles on a 1968 Alberg 30. My first time sailing on the Ocean.
Hi! I'm Markus, I started this journey in Toronto, Canada in July of 2015 and intend to circumnavigate back to where I started. Enjoy the Routes of Change Adventure Travel Vlog Series and feel free to binge from the beginning here : • Around the World Witho...
In this weekly youtube series (Every Sunday at 4PM EST) I will share my day to day experiences of what it’s like to travel around the earth under my own power (with help from some wind and currents too!). Loads of epic adventure videos I’m happy to share with you.
Your support is much appreciated.
Please consider joining the Routes Crew for community and exclusive behind the scenes access: / routesofchange

SPOILER ALERT:!!
I started the journey in a canoe and have since trimaraned, hand cycled, pogosticked, tricycled, skiied, rafted, kayaked, SUPed, rowed, bicycled, sailed, walked, and danced half way around the planet.

Wow when u went swimming it's so beautiful I could cry. That water is the most beautiful sapphire blue 🔵 when u look down u can see nothing but blue. The visibility is crazy. There was nothing around no whales or fish not even a shrimp lol nothing. What an experience I hope to do this one day. I first saw a group of girls who rowed from San Francisco to Honolulu this summer & I followed their social media post the entire journey whenever they could post. & They swam in the same sapphire blue water you did. I've been interested in boating trips to Hawaii from California every since lol now I can't get enough watching these videos

Not much faster actually. We were sailing at close to hull speed much of the time and it would have added days to the journey if we were tacking back and forth off course. More comfortable for sure.

I'm a Maine lobsterman a 6th generation lobsterman to be exact, I just wanted to comment on the bananas being bad luck this is taken seriously by most Maine salts other superstitions are you are never allowed to whistle on a boat Also bad luck, you can never use the word pig 🐖 hog, pork or any word to describe a pig another one is that it is considered really bad luck to paint your boat blue 🔵 and never change a boats name if you buy one used, keep the name it has. On a lighter note it's considered really good luck to get pooped on by a seagull or any other type of sea bird. And if you ever catch lump fish in your trap you have to kiss it before you throw it back 😜 I'm not ashamed to say i have kissed many o lump fish! Anyway cool videos 👍 and safe travels guys!

I might be wrong but I'm thinking this might have been his first sailboat crossing but he is posting the video out of order. If you think about it, it seems he just met Dave, sailed with him, and then rented the boat from Dave for solo sailing. Also, if he started in Canada and departed in this boat with Dave from California, how would he have got to California if he was already a continent away. I'm not sure why he posted it so late but that seems to make sense.

I knew very early that You and Dave didn't exactly have the tightest bond here. I'm guessing you hitched a ride with him? That's fucked up to just ditch someone literally on one of the most expensive islands on the planet with just a paddle board to get around on. At the same time I can imagine the difficulty in being in a small sail boat for nearly a month with a complete stranger that you'd rather not even be with in the first place. Bring to mind a lesson from my grandmother: "Always have your own". Wish you the best in your journeys bro. Oh and Fuck Dave lol

15:09 Somewhere I've read that sea ankers suck. In books they are the perfect solution. On the ocean they are not. They get you parallel to the waves. They are too large. They are too small. They are never good. Better forget sea ankers. Can you two agree?
@Routesofchange
@Routesofchange 4 жыл бұрын
I think our issue was not enough practice, not enough wind, and poor setup/deployment. I think when you really need one it can make the difference. On a previous ocean rowing journey we used one frequently and it made a huge difference. Same length boat but with way less windage...I think it really depends on the boat, the seas, the chute, etc... Can't hurt to carry one and be willing to throw it if it doesn't work.

Your goal of circumnavigation should have begun with your own sailboat rather than hitching rides from sailors. Although it is common for sailors to seek volunteer deck mates for longer passages, it's also common to set them ashore at the first opportunity if they fail to hold up their end, are poor company or for any reason whatsoever. A 30 foot boat requires total comparability and teamwork not often experienced anywhere else. Even loving marriages sometimes go south after long passages as well as boats "for sale" in far-away destinations. I did enjoy the very informative video. Thanks for posting it.

@@Routesofchange Yes, that was, and is, very ambitious of you and brave. I think you'd be surprised how many guys have crossed big oceans with very modest boats, some of them homebuilt and others auction wrecks... There are sea-gypsies even now, scattered all over the world and living on very little and seeing the world too. The main requirement is courage (which you already have) and an old boat (which you can get.) Then it'll be your turn to maroon some disagreeable deck-hand. "Get Real, Get Gone," is a book you might find interesting. I did. Bon Voyage and we'll hope to see you sometime where the sun sets and leaves a shimmering, golden path to follow. @@Pulaco.Dimantag Lots of folks have circumnavigate on next to nothing starting with Joshua Slocum in the 19th century. He was dirt-poor and found his vessel lying, abandoned in a field. He salvaged it, renamed it "The Soray" and sailed away. In modern times, a young teenager, Robin Graham, became the youngest, single-hander to circumnavigate in a 23' boat. The list goes on and today we have many folks continuing to live and sail on limited means. It does require some means, passports, visas, entry fees and such but the world is still open to intrepid wanderers and they are out there now.

Too late now, but for others who want to swim off a becalmed boat in the middle of the ocean.... please throw a line with float off the stern. Turning tiller to one side or the other may also be a good idea. If a breeze or current starts to move the boat faster than you can swim, it might save your life. Safety first.

I've been down as far as 80 feet, to the bottom. I never thought much about it before, but looking at your video of swimming in the middle of the Pacific; I might be scared to do that. What month did you leave for Hawaii? The Pacific is usually calm. I want a Cape Horn, the Canaduan man who designed it was an extremely interesting man. He sailed naked to avoid "boat butt". People don't talk about what happens to the skin and body in general when we are out at sea for extended tines. Being crusted in salt all the time is a challenge. Carrying enough freshvwater is also a challenge. But I prefer being on the ocean everyday.

I have a question I hope u can answer it because I can't find the answer. Why do ppl who do this trip almost ALWAYS leave from San Francisco Bay instead of leaving from San Diego which would be pretty much a straight shot to Honolulu Hawaii?
@Routesofchange
@Routesofchange Жыл бұрын
I don't think you're correct in saying that people almost always leave from SF. Maybe there are simply more people making videos from there (or there are more boats there but I don't think that's the case). The wind usually will have people go south a ways before heading towards Hawaii so it doesn't make any sense to leave from SF over San Diego unless you already have your boat there or somewhere further north. So yeah it generally makes more sense to leave from San Diego if you could choose where your boat was. That said, a straight shot often does not mean it is a faster or better sail. It's all about the winds, and often the currents too!. Cheers!
@TheChoralist
@TheChoralist Жыл бұрын
@@Routesofchange oh ok thanks for explaining. I watched a row team row from Cali to Hawaii over the summer on Instagram & they left from SF Bay too. Also all of the KZbin videos I've seen of this trip they left from SF. But I know cruise ships & stuff leave from long beach. I just thought there was some special current or something leaving from SF. So it just happens that your boat was there? Or do u live in the bay area?

Anyone with a sailboat and the courage to cut the dock lines can go anywhere there is an ocean...An that means he whole world!. It has always been this way and the world has always been within the sailors reach, even when they didn't always know where they were after getting there. Engines and modern technology helps but traditional sailing craft and skills are still king, at least for smaller vessels.

@@norml.hugh-mann Yes, you're correct. With names like Mointesserier, Hiscock, Pardy and others, pioneering the way and with GPS, SAT Phones and modern building materials including Dacron sail cloth. There are little excuses left not to attempt ocean voyaging. In fact, I would say that now is a golden age and a time for sailors everywhere, to follow their dreams without reservations. Even if you experienced a catastrophic sinking, a life boat should sustain you and an Epirb should summon help.

US Navy routinely authorizes "steel beach parties." These are open-ocean swim parties from the decks of ships and surfaced submarines.
