When I started the studio I worked at had 2 rooms the big room was an MCI JH-636 Console and 2 MCI JH24 2 inch machines Sync'ed, the smaller room I worked in had a Midas XL3 and a Tascam MSR-24 an unbalanced 1 inch 24 track machine. I made a ton of records on that Tascam desk!! They don't have the headroom of the bigger decks like MCI or Studer but they have a unique sound especially in the 150 hz and below range. Its a fine line between noise floor and running in the red on those unbalanced machines when working with transient heavy material like drums but when you get it dialed in they can sound as good as the bigger decks!

Interesting to see your setup. I've had lots of analogue setups over the years....I had a 32 channel Tascam M3500 with a Tascam MSR24. I finally went in the box a couple of years ago and don't miss the old stuff. As far as Tascam goes, the relatively new Tascam Model 24 is a fantastic bit of kit, running on about 60Watts of energy......these days with the cost of energy it's something worth thinking about. I'm in North Manchester so I'll be keen to watch any more stuff you put out. Good luck.

How much noise are you getting when compressing after tape? Is it manageable?

Yeah its no problem at all. We use the compressors much less than with a digital production. Just because you don't have to compress the heck out everything like with digital. As the tape machines naturally compress the signals anyway. When we do use the outboard compressors there isn't any problems with noise. Even when mixing down to the 2 track we run the signal through a valve compressor as well. Again there isn't any excess noise to speak of. If you're finding tracks to be noisy after compression then the input levels of the tracks at unity would likely be the cause. This applies using digital or analog.

I use to split the console . In channels 1-16 then tape outs to 17-32 This way all my inputs on left then tape playback on right. Your thoughts on this ? I’m GUESSING you do not do this because that console might have a playback switch on each channel and it’s dual purpose on each channel for input and playback ? Thanks

That's correct we can flip each channel individually to the returns from the tape machine. We also use the other channels for routing to and from the patch panel giving us greater versatility in post.

I don't quite get why the inserts are on the tape returns, I mean, this way those inserts are not going to be recorded on tape but just heard through the tape return, or I'm missing something here?

We have them on the return side for mix down so they are recorded on the final 2 track. This way they are optional so we can pick and choose what's best for the final mix. You could of course have them on the input side but once recorded on the multitrack you are committed.
