Last year the oil leak from my Rover 220 Coupe's engine got too bad to drive. It's a common problem on the T Series which needs a head gasket change to fix it, so it went to the back of the barn and the back of the queue but now Im fixing it!

Nice! Im part way through a head gasket job on the wifes Corsa. Snapped exhaust manifold stud means i ran out of time last weekend, so the car is on the driveway with half its engine missing until i can get back to it this weekend 😑 Those rover factory manuals are epic, and they really are worth their weight in gold, i have shelf full of them

Autodoc take ages to send stuff, they don’t actually stock a great deal they rely on the supplier sending it to their consolidation warehouses, this takes 2-3 days, then 3-4 days shipping to UK. They are also a nightmare for returns and keep your money for ages.
@swaitsysg4415
@swaitsysg4415 3 ай бұрын
I'll second that. I've bought stuff from Autodoc a few times and while the parts I've received have been fine, its always taken a week to 10 days for deliveries to arrive. I also hear, though I've never had it myself, that if the specific part you've ordered isn't available, autodoc will send a "near as dammit" replacement, which might not be near enough.

Same in sweden. Used to use them. Now days it takes ages to get what you order if they will send what you order. Example a friend ordered a chrome altenator (they had in stock) but recived a "standard" one i tok ages to get a reply. So he ordered another one and before he checked out it was changed to the one he already got. After much complaining they sent the right one. They only said it will fit. But he wanted a chrome because it is fitted to a beach buggy. So i have used trodo for a couple of years so far no trouble.

The exhaust manifold bolts on these engine are notorious for working loose and dropping out which is probably why they were loose. On a sad note from my point of view when I saw a video on the Tomcat I was hoping you were going to say it was for sale…..

Really well done Matt. It was nice to see this one going nearly by the numbers. It came apart OK, it went together eventually without an additional extra 7 hands and the engine does turn. It was great to see the sequential removal of the head bolts and the same with the assembly. I have seen a few videos in the past where it's been a free for all on this with a disaster in the making.. The order of removal and assembly is vital to reduce warpage as the manual mentions and get a good gasket seal. I've only done a few A series head gaskets in my younger years that are much simpler than a double overhead cam head but the principles remain the same as if changing a timing chain on said engines at the same time. Many thanks for sharing.

10 to 15 years for changing a head gasket not bad compared to the Hillman Gazzells with the alloy head l would be lucky to bet two years out of a head gasket no wonder l gave them up and went Japanese never looked back my 1997 Toyota Hilux has never had the head gasket Toyota engineering excellent they got it right it boggles the mind why British Leyland and Rootes Group couldn't get right but Toyota did and they blamed the alloy cylinder head on an iron block my Hilux is an alloy cylinder head on an iron and Nicole block

Mr furious Driving..It may be an idea to have the exhaust valves out and clean them up-and the port's.. They did in cases suffer with valve sticking as and it was a TBI mod... It has likely had the modified exhaust valves but after the years.. clean and A lap would be a good call.. Now the M16 and the T16 engines all suffered with head gasket leak on the oil gallery on the front Number 4 front end.. it will likely start leaking again.. They kinda did that. So don't worry if it starts to weep again..

Umm the big hole you pointed at in the head and the block is not the oilway. That's where a head bolt goes (if you look at the block you can see it has a thread). The smaller hole in front of it is the oilway. That's one of the reasons it leaks.

A good tip for the dreaded manifold bolts is, get one loose give it a squirt of whatever, then tighten it back up and work on the next bolt. Repeat until all have been loosened and re-tightened. Then undo all of them. The reason to do this is, a manifold can warp and as you loosen one end it puts more pressure on already stuck bolts.

11:49 Do wonder how many Rover K & T series head gaskets were changed in the first six months of ownership..... especially as the original style of gaskets used were nothing like the re-engineered ones you buy now. They were metal and had nicely piped Gasket sealer on them. They were crap!!! 😂😂😂 21:35 I use a breaker bar to do ° bits on head gasket jobs, you can gauges that show the correct ° readings though. 😃
