I restored 1973 RR here in NZ so I was sad you gave up on that one. However I too would love to do a 2a so these are a great insight to what might be involved, looking forward to your progress and don't give up n this one !!

Funny that, same situation. I guess the 2a was sitting in my mind for a long time seeing I already had RRC's in the past. These are so much easier to work on, just a BIG mechano set really. BTW - I know the guy who bought my old RRC and will see it often ;)

Thanks for your compliment, although I do strongly suggest the manual as I am certainly no expert!

What are the red and black plugs on the dash at 11:47? Are they an auxiliary power plug of some sort?
@rovertasmania70337 жыл бұрын
I believe so, external power supply which is useless now days as usb ports are used. However i wanted to keep original equipment and ill plumb in usb charger later.
@bigbird1307 жыл бұрын
Originally they were for an accessory light. I have just received the plug as I want to use it to plug in some cigarette lighter sockets. That way I don't have to run lines thought the dash.
@rovertasmania70337 жыл бұрын
Good to know that option too. Where did you get yours?
@bigbird1307 жыл бұрын
I got mine on Ebay

I may have to fiddle with my fuel gauge. Now I've soldered the tank breather back in and so can fill the tank, I've found the gauge only deflects to 1/3 full when its brimming. Very useful vid. Cheers I noticed the gloves came off!
@rovertasmania70337 жыл бұрын
These gauges arent exactly that accurate, if anything its best to have the lower settings accurate over the top half. Gloves ended up giving me the irrits...

Rover Tasmania I know the gauges are not to be trusted. Toying with fitting a series one tank as I liked my old 86 cos you could SEE how much petrol was left. The gauge was just a rough guide. Thanks mate!

I like the way you sorted out the fuel gauge. Mine works fine but this video will be a lot of help for people looking to repair their instruments.

BigBird130 I hope so that they will help. I know my vids are dry and detailed but that's the point really.

Hey don't worry about them being dry. They are very helpful. Keep up the good work

Nice work on the dials - not sure about the patina though

Jonathan Dosser Thanks, yeah I will be making a final decision when it's time to rebuild on what look I want.

You also want to make sure that if you want the gauge to last for a long time to replace the solder with leaded solder not the lead free stuff. Apparently over time the lead free solder begins to crack, not the case with the leaded stuff though.

Thank you for this very helpful video. In which way did you remove the black cover from the housing?
@rovertasmania70336 жыл бұрын
If your talking about the black bezel ring, its a twist to mate the gaps in the ring to the tabs in the housing. It may have some adhesive so be careful when putting pressure.

Sorry, i only meant the cover of the fuel gauge. I seem to have the same problem with a disconnected coil inside my 1955 LR Series 1 gauge and i wonder how i can open the housing without destroying it . Must i drill out the two outer mounting holes of the housing to untighten the cover? Many thanks from Germany!
@rovertasmania70336 жыл бұрын
They way I did it was to gently squeeze in the folded tab at one end only and then slide the face over. Then you can look inside. I am not sure if this is the way to do it properly but its how it worked for me. Once finished I then slid the face back to normal position and then gently folded the tab over again. On my Part 3 Dash Refurb video, if you freeze at 6:55 you will see the two ends with the folded over tabs.

Good work - wish I'd seen it before I managed to break both the fuel guage and the ammeter on my first attempt at restoring my panel, followed by damaging the Lucas light switch - whole instrument panel will have to be replaced, I think and these are getting very rare and expensive now.
@rovertasmania70336 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Bugger about yours breaking! Its a gamble when working on these older things. Like my head bolts snapping, never had that happen before.

Hey mate, great videos! I’m working through my 65 2a 109 and trying to figure out what each light/switch is for on the dash…. Been watching your videos, but didn’t hear what each one is specifically. Do you have a link that explains each of them? I can’t attach a pic of mine, but it’s similar to this one, but mine has a few extra lights. Any chance I could email you a pic please? Cheers

It looks like that your fuel gauge is an electrodynamic instrument(not sure). So if you will fix the jump from half to full, it could help if you change the the coils( maybe only the upper coil). the resistance of the coil do have an effect on the pointer of the gauge. Your vids are great. keep on...greetings from germany
@rovertasmania70337 жыл бұрын
Thanks anciende. I know very little about electronics so prefer not to touch. I have another fuel gauge I can try it with to see if it makes any difference but I wont be touching/changing anything as I will break it!
