• Rovetta: Salve mi Jesu...
Salve mi Jesu
motet for alto, five strings and continuo
Text: Adaptation of the Marian text "Salve Regina"
Music: Giovanni Rovetta
In this recording:
Andreas Scholl, countertenor
Concerto di Viole
Basel Consort
Recorded in October 1997
This motet was published in 1957 in the edition of Franz Tunder's works. This is the score that you see here, and the version that was recorded. But musicologists discovered later that this work, ascribed to Tunder by an unknown hand in the manuscript source of that edition, was actually a Salve Regina composed by Giovanni Rovetta, with a "Protestantized" text. Rovetta's original Catholic version was published in Venice in 1647, in his Opus 10, Mottetti concertati a 2, e 3 voci.
Salve mi Jesu, pater misericordiae,
vita dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus exules filiae Evae,
ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia ergo advocata noster
illos tuos misericordes oculos
ad nos converte et pacem tuam
nostris temporibus concede,
o clemens, o pie, o dulcis Jesu Christe,
pacem concede, o pax vera Jesu.
