The man loves he's hammer, as people have said there is a simple spread tool to remove the hub which makes the job even easier, a little research can save a lot of time!

Thanks for a good video. suspension change is a nightmare when its rusty and seized up makes an hours job into a weeks work.

I just did this job on a mk5 golf with 40mm lowering springs. Didn't have to touch the wiper cowel, there was enough flex to shove my paw in towards the bolts. One of the captive nuts on the top mounts dropped out so that was a pain to hold underneath whilst undoing it. I got away with just undoing the wishbone, didn't have to undo the axle bolt. There's a socket bit you can get that spreads the hub by slotting in and turning it 90 degrees. It just drops off the shock then. Probably worth it if you're doing them all the time. It's one of those jobs that you could do in half the time now after the first go! 👍

totally agree would be much easier next time and having the proper tools is always key, trouble is most of the tools used on a vw arent use on most other cars (such as a spline bit set)
@JohnnyDub164 жыл бұрын
@@rowanlewisuk Yeah I was lucky I had the M12 spline bit from doing brakes before but the one on the drop link caught me out lol. I like the coilover plans though! 👍

Definitely not an incompetent mechanic mate, it really is a pig of a job. Bloody VW's 😂 What happened to me was the top mount bolts seized in the nuts and the rivnuts ended up spinning in the mounts 🤦🏼♂️ thank god for the Dremel grinders 😂

I've just replaced the shocks, springs, lower ball joints, parallel torsion joints and 2 "axel rubbers" but removing the wipers isn't necessary... I'm actually washing my oily hands right now....... Remove the axel end and the 3 bolts in the lower ball joint and then put a chisel in the gap in the lower end of the shock.... The only thing to do is to put some WD40 in between the shock and the mount.... Then tap and it will almost fall off... Be careful about the brake line....

@@rowanlewisuk no problem buddy, if you decide to do the passenger side there's no need to remove the wiper motor just the metal panel👍

You ain't an incompetent mechanic. Jobs like that are almost enough to put anyone off. Often mechanics say to replace droplinks, ball joints, springs and shocks in pairs and do both sides. Realistically we go round roundabouts in the UK clockwise which wears the offside more than the nearside and our roads in here in Scotland are not fit for anyone with the potholes, wear and tear and often an adverse camber. The offside always fails first.
@rowanlewisuk4 жыл бұрын
Steve I would have done both sides if it was in any way a performance vehicle but I drive this thing like its a tractor so I didnt bother doing both sides. (Plus im considering lowering it with coilovers anyway 😁)

4" grinder is your best friend, most of the fasteners you remove are replaceable so cut them off.

There's a special tool to open the strut sleeve. I've seen them on ebay or Amazon. I use a bigger hammer not a chippie hammer. That and lots of wd40 and a pry bar.

Was the pause, cut and jump to seeing it installed as you were putting the caliper back on down to having to persuade it over the sizeable lip on the disk? That van looks like a right pain. Good work sticking with it and resisting hitting it with a sledge hammer. ;)

Welsh Whoopee the guy who sold it said it had a new clutch but it slips at times. I wonder if something’s leaking onto it or there is an installation issue. Its weird sometimes its super strong other times it slips very easy
