Signal Chain:
Guitar -- RE-02 -- Cuvave Cube Baby (pre-amp simulation & cabinet simulation mode only w/ minimal delay)
Guitar Tuning: E♭, Drop C#
I was trying to find the right words to describe this pedal, now that I finally got one. 'Coz prior to ordering this unit, my initial thought was that this would probably be Rowin's attempt to clone the 'univibe' pedal. But, alas! I was wrong...
Well, not totally. Probably 40% correct. And that's disappointing to my end considering i got a certain level of satisfaction i was hoping from this device.
So, i ended up looking on the interwebs what Rowin themselves got to say about their unit. And what I've read got my braincells melting instead as they bleed through the words that raised me more questions than answers instead.
So here you go...
"RE-02 (Vibrock)
The Chorus-Tremolo Monoblock Pedal can create fantastic sounds for electric guitar, showing more richness for the prolonged sound, and it must be mentioned that its sounds belongs to Modulation, getting much more wild when play with Fuzz Effect. Even if you add a Delay Effect, the sounds would be also very psychedelic, directly becoming the JIMI status. In a word, the Psychedelic Rock perfectly interprets the symbolic Chorus/Tremolo Effects of the late 1960s."
Fortunately, this channel's all about cheap pedals. Hence, the desire to seize the moment & enjoy what this thing had to offer instead - straight off the packet.
Considering all that pitch wobble & detuning that happens when the device is engaged, I feel that the pedal's more like a vibrato unit (rather than a tremolo) that heavily muffles the guitar's dry signal when engaged, but also acts like a clean boost with a hint of the same underneath. It's got its own character & quirks. But, it's also not so forgiving when you're trying to find a suitable 'sweetspot' to let your guitar's tone be sitting on top of it.
For what it's worth, I personally think that the pedal still sounded pretty good & 'useable' still given its price-point of course. It's cheap, i know. So, i guess i only got what i paid for. My only complain is that the 'vibe' switch could have been something that can be remotely activated through a latching type of footswitch as well (e.g. Boss FS-5L). Hence, the 'vibrock' would've maximized its given potential through that latching switch adaptability alone...
For direct monitoring from the 'cube baby', I'm using an ATH-M20X headphones by Audio Technica. However, a parallel out also directly coming from the 'cube baby' itself goes to the audio input of my phone, which is just an old Samsung J6+ unit. And, upon transferring the 'ATH' into the 'J6' for previewing, there really isn't much variance at all. BUT, soon as I've watched the file/video from my desktop, which drives a pair of Bose Companion 2 Series II monitors, the discrepancies in audio quality is fairly large. Apparently, the 'ATH' trumps the 'companions' this time around, though.
Hence, quite likely, the tone you'll be hearing from your end may not give justice to how I've heard the pedal when i had it tested through my own system.
