The 2022 GB U23 Coxed Four U23M4+ became world champion and set a new world best time in style. ‪@robbieprosser1007‬ send me a message and their behind the scenes video and asked for a review. Their coach Brian Young gave them two pieces of advice that are some of the best I have heard in a long time. I sincerely believe that these, along with the athlete's individual rowing experience and dedication made this new world best time of 06:02 possible.

Aram, on an erg I am perfectly comfortable rowing with my legs together with absolutely no discomfort. However, in the boat it is physically impossible for me to keep my legs together and really uncomfortable to try and correct it. So you have any ideas on why I am experiencing this?

Probably related to different foot height.

Agree with height of feet, namely distance between seat top and lowest point of the heels. In addition the angle of your foot stretchers in the boat and the distance between your feet are relevant as well.

@@AramTraining what would you suggest to help improve? Higher or lower the feet? Less or more stretcher angle? Wider or closer feet? Thanks

Love the coxed four and find it a shame it has fallen out of favour at World level. In the old days, the coxed four was what the coxless four is today. It was the primary four sweep boat class. I don't know about today, but way back in the early 80's as a GB school boy rower, the coxed four was the staple of clubs everywhere. I also heartily agree with the "softer" catch for want of a better phrase. i.e. not stabbing the power on at the catch. I believe the amazing 2018 St. Paul's eight at Henley used this technique. Their coach got them to "hold onto" the water at the catch and accelerate while holding onto that water rather than what I saw a few eights crews doing that year, rip that catch as hard as they could the moment the blade buried itself. As I heard it once said "Pick up the water and keep hold of it, don't rip it."

Relate all instruction to one of the six senses. It's how we learn as children. Your body and mind doesn't understand anything else.

Thanks Aram. Really useful concept(s) that make me think and will employ next season. The 4+ is still the popular choice of University rowers as well as the 8+.

Thank you for the really good explanation and useful hints, i always learn new things and ways to teach rowing key concepts watching you. I have one question, what pulling the boat underneath yourself means? I imagine you meant letting the boat accelerate without transfering the body load to quickly to the catch killing boat momentum, but i'm not that sure. Thank you for the work you do, it's high quality material
