My uncle met Paul Whitehouse and he told me that Paul Whitehouse told him about how they filmed and did the Rowley Birkin sketches. There was no script, no rehearsals. When the camera started rolling, they would Paul Whitehouse a image and Whitehouse would make it all up on the spot.

0:47 That slide looks like a picture of the October 1940 German air raid on Balham in S.London which caused a bus to fall into the ensuing crater from a massive bomb… & around 66 people died while sheltering in the tube station below. Probably not the best thing to be laughing along to.
