You guys think this lathe was designed for machinists or people that want to be machinists? It’s for “makers” who like to make stuff but likely aren’t ever going to be a machinist or engineer (I’m both). Turning and CAM have a fairly high learning curve. This machine attempts to ease the barrier of entry. Who needs chess pawns and other “maker” type parts made to less than 20 microns tolerance?

Fine that it's not designed for it, but they shouldn't really be using terms like precision so frequently thought the presentation

@petittoto7433
@petittoto7433 Жыл бұрын
4'000$ is an expensive toy, because it is a toy. And I see only 3 axis, not 4. The shitty Chinese second spindle should not be counted as an axis. And 3'000 rpm for the main spindle is low for this kind of diameter. And CNC or manual, you still need some knowledge to operate this kind of machine. ... Nice project, bad (false) advertising.

I'm an engineer who works with cnc machines. This looks great for designers and hobbyist and for small batches and/or less details on the part. I haven't seen this drilling or making bores or internal features. Is it still possible? And we engineers all know the main problem is the heat, but the video doesn't show any cooling method. Do you use compressed air? Does it needs compressor? Or does it have coolant liquid capability? Other question is i guees this isn't gonna cut stainless 316 or 143d. What is the toughest it can cut? Bronze?

"I haven't seen this drilling or making bores or internal features. Is it still possible?" I don't think a stepper motor (main spindle) will have enough holding power for drilling operations. Yeah no servos on this machine. Looks like there isn't enough torque for single point threading either. The more I read their kickstarter the less I'm interested in it.

Next Model: "Rownd XL" - Features a Cast Iron Base (saves you tons on machining time, but give the necessary rigidity needed for higher speed cutting and more accurate surface finishes) 38mm Through Spindle Support. I have an import hobby lathe with this feature. It's completely doable, even on a budget machine, but often gets overlooked. And lastly, a full 27.5" (700mm) between centers. This allows for a legit 24" finished part. I'll let others chime in on possible upgrade features, like higher power spindle motor, larger 4th axis spindle motor, collet holder spindle chuck, part ejection tray, recirculating filtered coolant pump, rotary tool holder for no-stop automation tool changes. There's so much you can do, even with a small platform. Just having a roadmap of upgrades that keep this tool future proof would be fantastic. Other companies have tried this, but have cheaped out with sub-par components, or don't listen to their customer base.

Sorry, I'll stick with my old iron. This concept is not new at all, you have just reinvented the sherline machines but with less, precision and reliability. Keeping with the benchtop formfactor a Hercus PC200 or an emco compact 5 from the 90s would run circles arownd this. If you want to make a real machine worth buying, and not a glorified toy, make it out of a casting so it's actually rigid, and for crying out loud use ballscrews. "20 microns" enjoy trying to make transition fits.

@@ThePlexman yh i guess you can a bit. Question is, can you mill molds for casting with it? I always lookedfor a very smal but multi axies cheap but high precision cnc milling machine, because i wanted to machine molds. The problem with molds is, they are super expensive. First reason of course is its engineering, but also machining quality. everything needs to be perfect. I think it could be done more cost efficient, if you could do it with a very cheap milling machine. This could give you the opportunity, to have more machines at once and can do tests and create more molds simoultanously. This may make the process faster and cheaper.

If you are cutting plastic, probably not much noise. If you are cutting metals like steel, aluminum, copper and brass , you better be able to deal with chatter. Squealing and squawking, plus that cabinet will be a nice little resonating drum. We had a cnc that ran nice and quiet, but when it ran around 415 rpm it would shake like it was ready to come apart. These things are too small. There's an old saying, you can make small parts on a big lathe but you can never make big parts on a small lathe.
