Thank you for visiting me this past week. I have finished my little Grandnephews jumper with your help. It was a bottom up dk patterned body, plain arm job and because I didn't want his ears pulled off when it went over his little head, I put a button on the back. You didn't know but you advised me on making the buttonhole and sewing the button on making a shank. I am so pleased with the way it turned out and I will post it off so he can wear it. Thank you again. I will be back again. Take care.

Amazing wealth of knowledge in your video! Thank you so very much for sharing it! I have just removed all my buttons from a cardigan I knit and had sewn them on with the same wool as the cardigan. They looked rather odd! Now they look so good, I am chuffed to bits!! I used sewing thread and ran it through my beeswax block to strength it.

Thanks for the video. Another option on thread that I use is embroidery thread. It comes in about every color in the rainbow, plus I also use two (2) strands doubled to sew buttons on both knitwear or sewing projects. Using this method you use the same amount of thread, but with less passes through the button. Also match colors on the diagonal. Also embroidery thread is cheaper than a spool of sewing thread.

She mentioned "needlepoint thread", just didn't show it.And mentioned that it comes in lots of colors.

When you mentioned embroidery that’s what clicked with me. That’s the floss like DMC that comes in the little bundles. Tons of colors! I used to buy those for 5x$1 when I did cross stitch in grade school. Great idea.

Thankyou roxanne. If you are at all familiar with cat bordhis sweet tomatoe heel we need a video showing how to rearrange the sts 1/3 and 2/3 to 1 circular and 2 circulars....I did buy her ebook and I have read her directions 100 times. I think I understand but a visual would be so helpful. Putting on dpns is easy. Love all your informative videos😋

I am just sewing buttons to a cable cardigan I made for my grandson. Whew, what a challenge, but I am now finished! I used a double pointed knitting needle to create space for the shank, but it was annoying how tie needle kept flipping around. So, I placed ti under the button, catching a couple of stitches to the right and left of the button and anchoring the needle to the sweater body horizontally. With the needle thus stablized, it was much easier to attach the buttons. I would have sent a photo of what I mean, but I don't see any way to do this. I hope it is clear.

Do you ever use a second flat button on the back side of the band to distribute the pressure from the thread over a wider area to prevent the thread from "burrowing into" and/or cutting the knitted fabric?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 6 жыл бұрын
I don't, although others do. I tend to use 3- or 4-ply worsted-spun yarns, so those are pretty sturdy, and I don't worry too much about the thread cutting through the yarn. For a single ply yarn, or woolen-spun yarns, a stabilizing button might be an excellent idea.

Great tutorial. I just wish you hadn't sped forward the actual sewing on the button. I've never done this before and had to rewatch it a few times to see how you were threading it onto the fabric. Other than that, this was super informative and to the point. thanks!

Thank you Roxanne. I thought the use of grosgrain ribbon or a secondary "backer" button on the wrong side of the fabric was necessary so there would be no strain on the yarns of the fabric itself. Though using a "backer" button would add more weight. What are your thoughts? Also, you used what seems to be a really large button for the size of the button hole. How do I determine the best size button for the buttonhole? My background knowledge is primarily sewing, so I'm fearful I've bought buttons that are too small. Thank you again, and I so appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience with us!!!

Knitted buttonholes are typically smaller than the buttons, because the buttonhole will stretch as the button is pushed through. (Buttonholes for woven fabric have to be larger than the button, because the hole doesn't stretch.) I usually either knit the buttonholes and take the sweater to the fabric store and test whether or not a button I've chosen will fit through it, or I choose the buttons I like, and then knit a swatch to test what size buttonhole will work well.

Can you tell us more about the reinforcing thread? Where to buy, what kind, etc. thanks.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 6 жыл бұрын
My LYS always had a display of Scholler & Stahl Fortissima reinforcing thread. I've also purchased Lang Jawoll sock yarn that had a spool of reinforcing thread including inside the skein. I believe there are a few other companies that sell this, too. It's usually about 5g of thread on a card or spool. If you Google "reinforcing yarn for socks" you should be able to find a few brands, and sources for purchasing.

Roxanne Richardson Thanks I’ll check the local yarn shop here. I’m not at my own town which has no LYS. I need for sock yarn that has no nylon.
