The funny thing is, this is the first sock heel I _ever_ knit... that one time I was stuck sick in my student flat, bored out of my mind, had some yarn I had bought in a thrift shop, and decided to try knitting in the round from what I vaguely remembered from my knitting booklet (which had stayed at home). I had only sharpened wooden kitchen skewers for my needles, and made it up as I went... ... the short of it is, this is exactly the type of sock heel you invent when you're only familiar with modern machine-knit socks but also have no idea yet that short rows are a thing. :D I have since graduated to other heels, because exactly as you say - these can get tight. But I was suuuuper proud of myself for figuring it out, so I'm still fond of this one!
@annwithaplan9766 Жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. I just started doing socks a week or two ago. For years I was too intimidated to try them. But all the while wondering if a heel could be done this way, and it can. I did a pair of socks with the heel and gusset and they turned out good. Then I made a similar one as this (shadow wrap heel), but I don't like how they form a ridge line on the inside, so I'm going to rip that out and will try it this way next, except I'm going to slip the first st on every row, then pick up those sts (since they'll be easy to see) when I get to that part.

Finally getting to test out this heel, and knitting it with dark wool and fine needles, on an overcast evening in a room with East-facing windows wasn't all that ideal. Picking up the purl bumps on the WS turned out to be far more nerve-wracking on the first try than it should be. However, I solved the problem by marking the stitches to be picked up by a length of waste yarn through the purl bumps on each side, making sure that I had the correct number before getting started on the second half of the heel. That way, if something's not on the lifeline, it doesn't get picked up. Thought I'd share this tip in case it helps anyone.

That’s a great suggestion. I was having problems with the bumps as well. This sounds like the ideal solution. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing. This makes perfect sense. I don't know why I've never tried it before. I think this might be a good heel to do on my mindless-socks-on-the-go socks. I like patterns that I can pick up and put down and not have to think about where I am.

Yay! Finally a demo of heel turning that makes sense to me. I've been knitting and redoing the heels of my socks. Like more than 6 times of each heel redoing. Has been driving me crazy, almost! But determined that I'll get somehow. Think this is the one for me. Thank you so much Roxanne.❤

Wow. Thank you for this. I have ADHD and it’s common comorbidity - dyscalculia (dyslexia for numbers). I learned to knit at age 6. I’m a competent knitter who loves knitting, and especially handknit socks, but dyscalculia makes knitting socks nightmarish. I have several pairs of socks on needles - all of them stumped at the heel. I know how short rows work. I can knit short rows. I understand short rows. But I screw them up every time because I get lost and confused about where I’m up to, make a mess of it, rip undone, start again, and somewhere on the 4th or 8th time (depends how much patience and perseverance I have att), to save my sanity I give up, and put the partly knit socks aside. German Short Rows are the heel I’ve found to be manageable for me, but I don’t love them, I don’t love doing them, and I still make a mess of them. But I love knitting socks so sooner or later I am filled with hope and promise and start another pair from scratch - hence all my sock needles now have unfinished socks on them. It’s so frustrating and sad 😢 This method is fantastic. No getting confused about where that wrap is, or when to turn, or how many rows done etc. I love it. Can’t wait to try. But as I and my daughter have high insteps I’d better pay close attention to see how to combat the too tight fitting across the instep because I don’t like that - uncomfortable. If handknit socks should be anything, it’s comfy and snug but not restrictive! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you 🙏 ❤

This idea is genius. I’ve never finished a short row heel successfully. I’ve ended up with odd gaps and holes or lost count of the sequence for leaving stitches not worked at the end of rows. I actually think I can do it using the idea. Thank you!

It is a really great idea. especially the way you pick up the purl bumps. And I love the fact that with my German short rows, I still get some little holes, I do not like, and this solves it. And the adjustment later on in making the heel longer. Great.

I LOVE this heel! I use chiaogoo sock needles and most other heels require extra needles. This one does not! I can do the heel fairly easy without extra needles. Finding the garter bumps is a bit challenging. I can feel them and guesstimate where I need to put the needle, but I think I might try stitch markers until I figure that part out better! So easy! I used this heel to make mini Christmas stocking heels as the circumference is so small in mini stockings. This heel worked great, easy to remember In order to avoid holes, I picked up some extra stitches going back in the round, like M1R or M1L then used K2Tog or SSK. I’m using a cotton/acrylic blend size 2 yarn on size 3 dbl points and this mock short row heel was a game changer. I usually use stainless steel needles but was glad I still have some bamboo needles for this task.

I just succesfully tried this out on my first sock! I find it quite a bit easier and nicer-looking than German short rows, which I tried out yesterday and frogged today. Your tutorials for both techniques are perfect though, you are an excellent teacher. After the German short rows experience I wanted to try out a heel that did not involve double stitches, heh. And I am asking myself now why anyone would want to do that when they can just do this! But it's like you always say, there are always different ways to arrive at a given result in knitting, some fit certain people or situations better than others, and it's always worth trying them out and understanding them in order to improve one's skills. Thank you again for all the amazing content!

Roxanne I have recently found that a little longer sock foot will add to more diagonal success in long run. I wear size 11 shoe so I set sock foot to 8” from toe before starting heel ALSO making sure sock not too tight in overall stitch count to start with BETTER too loose than too tight!! Thanks for great new technique!!!!

This method is fantastic. I have done the short route heel and the stitches where the short rows are performed are naturally looser and creates holes like you said. This method of picking up stitches keeps it tighter and looks fantastic. I like this method as you keep the yarn in one piece as compared to a gusset heel
@RoxanneRichardson3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like it! I'm not sure what you mean by keeping the yarn in one piece, unlike a gusset heel? I've never had to break the yarn for a gusseted heel, unless I was using a contrast yarn.
@sarahchellew82443 жыл бұрын
@@RoxanneRichardson oh I have never actually tried a gusset heel and I just presumed that you would have to break the yarn when changing from the ankle to the toe. In hindsight I see how it is done from what I have learned in this video. I also prefer the symmetrical look of the short row heel.
@sloppyjoe36173 жыл бұрын
This makes for a very tidy heel indeed. I may try it but I'll have to follow your video for the first few times because I won't remember all the little nuances. @RoxanneRichardson3 жыл бұрын
As I mentioned at the end of the video, this is not the typical way I would pick up along a garter stitch edge. The method I normally use works well on an edge that is not shaped (i.e. no decreases worked in the edge sts). That method was demonstrated in last week's video on garter stitch toe.

Perfect timing. I'm just ready to do my heel on this sock. I prefer the feel of the short row heel over the peasant heel, but much of my knitting is done on the go and short rows don't travel well in the middle on dpn's when it's toss and run.
