Wish I would have seen this before I quit being a combination knitter... I knew I had knitting issues getting the desired outcome...but not why. Through lots of research I am proud that I figured out I was a combination knitter... But couldn't find any information on how to readjust the yarn on the needle to get results wanted. I changed to a western style knitter then I had tension problems...now I knit in the Portuguese style from knitting pins attached to my shirt. This solved attention issues that gave me many more issues like how to get a twisted Stitch when you want one... Now I am becoming really good at reading stitches and swatching away my life, it feels. But I'm a lifelong learner and very inquisitive. I learned how to combination it because I taught myself and have dyslexia. I love all of your stuff on KZbin please keep going you have been a wonderous help for me I should be nicknamed the confused stylish knitter

I took up knitting in December (2020), nine months into pandemic lock down. While the basic technique is not entirely new to me, (I had self taught while knitting a couple scarves about 10 years ago), most video instructions create more questions than they answer. I was aware that, for lack of a better term, I was knitting backwards but until now I have not even heard anyone even elude to such a technique. While viewing this video I had an aha moment, "Eastern mount", leading leg and combination knitters. Translating what I see in video to what I am holding in my hands has been a challenging equation; one that I have not mastered, in fact most instruction befuddles me. By explaining this in detail you may have bridged the gap in what I was beginning to understand as a handicap. I just may be able to learn how to translate what lies before me rather than having to relearn my basic technique. Thank you ever so much.

Great Technique Tuesday video as usual! Thanks. I love the way your mind works. REQUEST: You mentioned you would explain about slipping stitches on the edges in another video soon. I currently use Slip 1st stitch Knitwise and Purl the last stitch of every row. My request is this: What if you forget to slip the 1st stitch and notice the mistake several rows later? Is there a way to go back down and fix it? Whichever technique you teach us, could you also show us how to fix this sort of mistake please? .... if a fix is actually possible.

Hi Roxanne. How I wish I cld sit down w you and ask my questions. I had just asked another knitter about a video about sts. Twisted most of all. The mechanics of the k and p and actually seeing it, but having the end result explained. I wld pay for a class like tht. One other comment I appreciate your interest in yesteryears. I am the same. Wanting to cook, using products tht can be made for cleaning (like windows) etc. More so for the learning and results. I mean, I definitely don't live to clean!! We had our final house built by an awesome crew of Amish. It is himself and 3 of his sons. The youngest being 9 yrs. Its their choice, their dad tells me. Their work ethic is nothing I've ever seen. Anyway his wife, Emma, had told me to come visit which is now wht I do most often. Once a month Emma has a circle of women who visit to knit. They taught me so much and definitely we all laughed whn I asked wht kind of knitting style they were doing. They all looked at each other, and an older woman said, We knit how we were taught. I said, "Duhhh Sue" and tht is wht brought on the laughter. Their English is halting since they don't know our words for wht they want to say. Its an awesome way to forge togetherness. I wish I cld photo their work as they do it but not even their hands will they hve photo'd. They can't have their work either displayed thru a photo. IF I cld take a video you wld be the first knitting pro I wld send it to. I enjoy how you explain, simple to the point. Some get too too involved. It has to be eastern knitting, this communities roots are from Belgium yet it most likely is their own way. I was able to show them inc and dec. They are the happiest most curious folks I've ever met. I hve knowledge of their reasons how they live their lives. It is simple and they know no other way. If their children decide to go "outside" at a certain age, all came back, but one. I truly understand why they live their way. Don't stop wht you're doing or ever stop going back and learning then sharing. I wld be delighted to go once with you for this purpose. Be well. Stay well. Thank you for all you offer.

Thanks so much for this video. It explains the why of slipping stitches. And I've been unaware of Western mount or Continental or Combination. I thought Continental was a way of holding the yarn only. If you want to I'd love to hear more about the differences between these methods of knitting, along with Portuguese and any other method. (And a book that describes them.) :-)

Continental does simply mean holding the yarn in the left hand. The three styles I mentioned were Western, Eastern, and Combination. these styles reference how the sts sit on the needle, not which hand you hold the yarn in as you knit.

Woven stitch/half linen stitch has a 4-row repeat. I was showing the instructions for one of those four rows, in order to demonstrate why moving the yarn position is sometimes called for.

I have never seen instructions for slipping sts on hold BACK ONTO THE NEEDLE!!! When we slipped them onto waste yarn, we were working the row as usual from right to left on the RS. We slipped purl wise. NOW, it’s time to put the held sts back onto the needle. Question: do you put them back from left to right on the row OR go back to the beginning of the slipped sts and put them back on the needle beginning at the right edge of the “slipped sts?”. I often find these slipped sts are somehow wacko and leave turkey track that won’t block out. Especially conspicuous on solid light colors in STST.

The goal is to maintain the stitch mount whether you are slipping them off to waste yarn, or back onto the needle. The leading leg of the stitch (the leg closest to the tip of your left hand needle) should be hanging over the front of the needle (for most knitters). If it's not, then you should make sure that you are knitting against/through that leading leg, even if it's hanging over the back of the needle. When you knit through the trailing leg of the stitch, it will twist at the base. So, transfer your sts with the tips of your needles pointing toward each other as you transfer the sts.

If you're simply slipping or moving a stitch from one needle to another (rather than prepping for a decrease), you will always slip as if to purl, and less told to do otherwise. Always assume that the yarn stays where it is when it's time to slip a stitch, unless specifically told to do something else.

Stitches are slipped for many reasons in many different situations. It sounds like you need to search for a video demonstrating slipped selvedge stitches, which is a very specific knitting situation, which, again, can be done in multiple ways, depending on the result you want.
