Took a couple of samples from Manga, one is from a sandy dirt while the other from a clay area. Tiller count on sandy is 15 (panicle length is 10 inch) is while the clay is 17 (panicle length is 12 inch).
With clay, the roots moves horizontally, same with sandy dirt. Roots don't move vertically mainly that it is more difficult for the root to move downward. Mature tiller has 4 to 5 leaves, they don't shed leaves unless the leaf is damage by pests.
