A movie comprised of various Roxy Music performances on TV. (The Early stuff, with Brian Eno) Compiled, Remastered, Edited and Altered to my - and, hopefully, your - Taste.
(tracklist below)
It was supposed to have another song (or two!), but the owners didn't allowed it, so it's not really the "Best of", it was supposed to be... : / Also it's a shame, because the song left out was important in the flow of the set... I, for sure, wouldn't choose Ladytron goin' into Dream Home Heartache... So... That's a little flat : | But I opted, not to re-do the whole thing, & just go with what I got... : )
Anyway, still: this is merely an historical, and educational document of this great, and original band... That's the main goal here! I do not own the rights, and there's no intention of profit. But also, I did my stuff on it (in fact this was done from the flesh and bones, as a new film. The audio was remastered, the videos completely realigned, clip by clip, and edited in many other ways, all for the "better" experience), so, if you recognize my work - and want to give a hand - you can:

Tracklist:
1. Virginia Plain 0:00
2. Do the Strand 2:59
3. Ladytron 6:58
4. Pyjamarama (Censored) 13:01 - & The Fastest Song Ever... : )
5. In Every Dream Home a Heartache 13:05
6. Re-Make/Re-Model 18:42 - & I did just that... ; )

A high school friend played the second record for me. Too weird! Took me a while to get into it, but I also read a passionate review in Cream magazine. I trusted them so I bought the record and kept trying. Gradually, I became a fan. I would have loved to have seen them live at the time these performances were filmed. Music was changing fast at the time. I guess it always is, out on the edges.

The early Roxy stuff remains exciting decades later. They were undoubtebly an influence on the whole punk/new wave/post-punk scene which they chose to ignore and transform into the coolest band of the late 70's and early 80's. Great clip.

@@mohairsam9705 Many punk and new wave musicians were fans Bowie and Roxy as performers, which isn't surprising considering their attitude to much of the formulaic, indulgent 70's music. Synthesisers weren't new but they had become more affordable and accessible by the time of New Wave.

@@mohairsam9705 There were just a few rock bands using synthesizers at the time. "New Wave" was a term given to bands who didn't want to be associated with the term "Punk". Yeah you're not wrong. Avant- garde, Art House, experimental, call it what you want, it doesn't matter. Eno and his magic, predate Kraftwerk, oh...and an oboe as well ! I was 12 when I heard this, I'm 62 now, so that in itself shows you the life this music has. The 'Siren' album of '75 is still up there for me. Bryan , Eno , Phil, Andy, Paul helped create a new sound, a self-consciously arch and campy referral to older genres of popular music. Each song on their first three albums is original and unique, but also share characteristics of '50s Rock 'n Roll, Velvet Underground, Stockhausen's Electronic Synthesizers, and Progressive Rock styles. They are one of my favorites musical innovators from that period.

Loved your comment! You hit it perfectly. Just a blend of every kind of music from the 1930's to the 70's. Isn't it something that Ferry continues to perform even today, but with material from the 20's and 30's "Pre-Swing" days? Ferry and Roxy always just tied it all together, and the their talent was almost ominous.

Yes, I much prefer “out of its time” to “ahead of its time”, which is a phrase that far too often gets bandied about by too many people these days where it doesn’t apply. I’ve always been of the opinion that early Roxy Music sort of inhabits its own unique little universe, which over the years has been wildly influential on so many bands, but no one has really ever actually caught up to it. Therefore, “ahead of its time” really isn’t the most accurate way to describe it. It really just kind of occupies its own place in time… or better yet, it’s just “timeless”.

Between 1972-73, Roxy couldn't put a foot wrong. The first three albums remain cast in stone. They had the looks, the vision, and more importantly the music. They didn't even include the two brilliant singles "Virginia Plain" or "Pyjamarama" on their albums. Such was the confidence in their talents. "For Your Pleasure" is Bryan Ferry's personal favourite of all the band's oeuvre. Rightly so. It remains immortal.

Well didn't get a lot of Roxy Music in Texas, ever! Most I'm listening to is just 60-70s noise. But I'm digging Brian Ferry and his latest band! Really good musicians. Roxy Music was a trip down a rabbit hole.

I grew up in Texas myself. Southwest Houston. You’re absolutely right. Roxy Music wasn’t exactly selling out arenas across the state back then (or ever, really). I’m a bit young for a fan. I was 7 years old at the time that my aunt first turned me on to the “Country Life” album, which at that time was their latest release… and then after seeing how much I was enjoying it she subsequently got me into the earlier stuff. She was a massive fan. Not just of Roxy Music but of British music in general. She was definitely an anglophile. At any rate I had no idea at the time just how lucky I was to be getting exposed to this stuff. I knew it was something very different from all the stuff that was getting played on the radio back then, but as a little kid I had no concept of just how unusual it was to be a 7 year old Roxy Music fan in Texas in the mid 70’s. It really helped lay the foundation for everything I got into later in life. A year or so later and “Love Is The Drug” became a minor hit, but that was a totally different Roxy Music.

Also forgot to add Echo and the Bunnymen from the 1970s/1980s. Saw them play twice live as a student in 1982. Liverpool band - contemporaries of Julian Cope and The Teardrop Explodes and I believe the two bands even swapped some members in their early days. Ian McCulloch has a great voice - and the band were heavily influenced by the contemporary Punk/New Wave scene in Liverpool - also, no doubt, by other Liverpool bands like the Beatles (surprise surprise !) and probably others like Gerry and the Pacemakers (Of 'Ferry across the Mersey' and 'You'll Never Walk Alone' fame. Almost certainly, too, by Mr. Bowie himself who was hugely influential on most musical pop artists in the UK and the USA - and elsewhere, too !

Back in 72...... attending a concert at the Kinetic Playground, Chicago..... to see headliner, The Steve Miller Band, and opening act, Foghat. Perfect boogie, trad-blues bands. Everyone was shocked by the first opening act, the then-unknown Roxy Music.... looking strange in makeup and feathered boas. And why does the lead singer, sing like that.....on purpose! No one knew whether to applaud or boo. Took 2 more years to get "it".

Out there.. disregarded.. waiting. ; ) until, 50 years later, someone decided to pick it up and - considering no one did for 50 years - do something with it (or from it..). Except, now, all the credit (beside the obvious and fair greatest share that at least the viewers and myself give to the band), all credit goes to the label that did nothing with it for 50 years and then took advantage of the work (and idea) of the guy that actually did it... ; ) that also makes me smile, but in a strange twisted way... : ) Cheers!

I saw Roxy in '71 or '72 at Winterland. They opened for Steve Miller with special guest Michael Bloomfield. What a show. Roxy Music pulled up to a Winterland side door in a limo and cut through the line entering through the side door. It must have been planned as the door opened right away for them and they were dressed in their "Glam" best! Definitely a very early defining force in Punk and Glam bands.

Pretty much my opinion verbatim. Very well said. I get so sick of all the moaning about early RM versus later RM. I’m just glad they never got caught in a rut where they kept making the same old albums over and over. It’s unthinkable. As you pointed out, they did the only thing they could do and moved on. The way I see it, it was basically two different bands. Definitely two different eras. If an album like “For Your Pleasure” had come out in the late 70’s rather than the early 70’s, it would’ve packed *MUCH* less of a punch (though still would have been brilliant). Maybe it’s my age (born ‘67. I’m a bit younger), but I’m one of those fans who appreciates both eras of Roxy Music, though I definitely lean towards the early stuff. It seems with most Roxy fans, it’s always one or the other. I’m glad I never limited myself that way.
