One of my favorite actors, Rutger Hauer, in one of my favorite roles as Roy Batty in Blade Runner. What an amazing performance by a Sci-Fi icon. Rest In Peace and thanks for all the amazing roles!

Never thought a film would affect me as much as this original, simply an inspiration.

Haha. I’ve made a couple Supercut videos and when I saw the comment in KZbin app I assumed it was for my most popular one for the movie,”Vacation.” I’ve since deleted my probably confusing response. This movie, for me, is my very favorite. It too shaped who I wanted to become. Awesome stuff and a gift to the imagination of a 14 year old.

And man he was fantastic. During my teen years I got hooked on him with action movies and then I went back to Blade Runner and it became one of my favorite ones.. He wrote above all the bad guy stereotypes to give the pictures and the character something more. These movies would be the Hitcher and Blade Runner. He was also great as Captain Navarre in Ladyhawke. Loved that one. What a great human being he was, we will never forget you, Rutger. ❤️🌈

In his final moments, he learns what death really is about (sorrow for Pris), he learns how to cry (the wolf-like howl: before it turns into a hunting howl, of revenge), he learns how to make poetry, how to play with words and images in his mind ('tears in the rain')

What a villain. Rutger Hauer had so much charisma.

@Blane, I see Roy Batty as Deckard's antagonist. But I don't think that he is a villain! He has done "questionable things", as Roy admitted himself. But Deckard and especially Tyrell, who gave the replicants such a short life span, have done questionable things, too. "The Bladerunner" is a movie without a clear-cut villain. It doesn't need a villain. But I agree with you about Rutger Hauer's charisma. He was a great actor, who should have been the leading man in many more great movies. I don't know why we didn't see more of him. Maybe, his intense and very special looks and the fact that he was Dutch is the reason why he didn't get more roles in important movies. But while Harrison Ford - whom I actually like - could have been replaced by another actor - without Rutger Hauer and his wonderful monologue about "tears in rain" The Bladerunner" would've been less great. If we look at the story from a different perspective, Roy Batty could have been the hero, who Fights for a longer and better life for himself and his rebellious fellow replicants! He could have been like Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus!

@@sabineb.5616 I always viewed Roy more of a tragic entity that has a conscious but wasn't allowed to have a conscious. Designating him a villain is up for debate since he did murder innocent people. More importantly he is more than that I agree with you there. The most fascinating and ironic character in the franchise imo. Layers of layers of possible interpretation. He tries to break free from a life of violence and killing. And the only way how for Roy is through violence and killing. That is how Tyrell designed him. Also when it is revealed there was no way to extend his 4 year lifespan it, the futility of it all and how hopeless his situation was from the beginning. All for nothing, I think his death also represents this especially his last words. Always nice to see a fellow fan of BR.

@@BlaneNostalgia , thanks for answering 😀, and I agree with your opinions. As to Roy as a very efficient killer: while I can understand why he killed Tyrell in a fit of rage, I was always bothered by the killing of Sebastian, who had been nothing but kind, generous and helpful! And Roy should have had compassion with him. It’s possible that this was a trick of the scriptwriter, because it makes the end more surprising. Viewers who watch the movie for the first time and who have just seen how Roy killed two people, will be very surprised that Roy will save Deckard and spare his life, although he could have killed Deckard easily. But maybe there's another reason why Roy kills Tyrell and Sebastian, but not Deckard: Deckard was only doing his job - finding and "retiring" rogue replicants, and he didn't even enjoy his job. But Deckard had nothing to do with the fact that Roy and his rogue fellow replicants had a life expectancy of just four years. This was Tyrell's doing. But Sebastian had a lot to do with it, too. He worked for Tyrell, and Sebastian's genetic flaw which caused him to age rapidly and die prematurely, had been used for limiting the life span of Roy and his companions. When Roy learned from Tyrell that there was no way to prolong his life, he might've blamed Sebastian, too! Sebastian had allowed Tyrell to use his faulty genes for designing short-lived replicants like Roy and Priss. That might've enraged Roy, and that's why he killed Sebastian as well.

@@sabineb.5616 Thats a very cool take for why he spared Deckard. Never looked at it that way... It does make sense for a "robot" to not make it personal but to look at it logically, Deckard just doing his job. Indeed Sebastian(poor basterd...), Tyrell, those security guards off planet all are tied to Tyrell company which of course is responsible for his predicament. Btw did you see the sequel? It also has layers upon layers.

@@BlaneNostalgia, yes, I saw the sequel, and I liked it a lot! It's very different from the first movie, but as you said, it's has so many interesting layers. It's a while ago that I have watched it. I should re-watch it - but I need to find the time, since it's sooo long 😉 But I really appreciate what Denis Villeneuve tried to do.

i wonder if Roy thought himself to be like Betelgeuse when mentioning the shoulder of Orion, burning out like a more energetic star
What were the things Roy Batty actually saw?
