I play the electric guitar since about 30 years now and I can assure you that it's NOT only the guitar, the wood or something else. FIRST of all the sound comes from the guitarist. It's the artist, not the gear that you recognize. When i play my strat or my tele they sound like me, if my fellow guitarist plays them they sound totally different. Thats it, it's in the fingers, not in the wood!

@@williamdon3442you can't buy tone although almost everyone tries to & spends all their time & money buying things that they don't need trying to achieve tone instead of practicing & mastering their craft &spending the time and effort where it counts instead of thinking you need an expensive amp, pedals and guitars as once you master the instrument all that gear becomes irrevalent, like you pointed out if you focus your time mastering your craft you will sound awesome regardless of what rig you play thru, you have to earn your tone the hard way as that is something the lazy guitarist can't buy as it comes thru hard work and constant practice &and like body building there is no shortcut or buying it, you have to earn it

The Man had More feel, and Soul than a lot of other Players of his time. Even when you think he may be playing out of tune he actually wanted those notes in there so he can resolve to the root in an unorthodox way. Notice his picking hand, and how he uses his other fingers along to create the intensity, and texture of the motif .Seymour Duncan actually wound his pickups for this particular Telecaster in this Video. Another Genius " Roy Buchanan" whose time came too soon. Thanks for the memory

My father turned me on to Roy when I was 12-13 years old. Strange circumstances brought me to Roy as my father frequented a small barber shop on Route 1, Hybla Valley in Fairfax County, Va. Roy was taking a break from playing on the road & drying out from a narcotics addition. After our haircut, my Dad would walk out to the car & fetch his Gibson Super 400. I dont remember much about their playing but my Dad was a Jazz musician & he had no interest in R&B til he met Roy. (continued)

Claiming a particular guitarist is the greatest ever is obviously a personal thing, but to me Roy Buchanan was unmatched by anybody else. If somebody else comes along that can move people emotionally more than Roy did I will travel as far as I have to to see them doing it. His gigs were often attended by other guitarists who basically stood in awe watching him tear that Tele to pieces, of course this was in between making it cry and whisper sweetly. God Bless you Roy, and thanks!

I knew Roy for a long time, I went to all his shows on the east coast and I talked with him on various occasions. No one will ever convince me that he took his own life. The bruises that were found on his head and the goings on at the police station that he was being held in were never fully disclosed and his wife, Judy, tried to have his body exhumed but could not and later it was found that other prisoners at the time were also mistreated at this cell by the same guard(s) but no one could do anything. Everything was covered up. If it happened today it would have blown up all over the news the way the Ferguson incident did. Except this time with good reason.

Buchanan was with the original Hawks (later known as "The Band"), and Levon Helm says he was a strange person with weird eyes and a bizarre sense of humor. And where Ronnie Hawkins wanted showmanship in his musicians (dance steps and so forth) he just let Buchanan stand on the side of the stage and play the living crap out of the guitar. You can hear his influence on The Band's Robbie Robertson, though Robertson on his best day (I feel) can't touch what Buchanan did on an average day.

Have you ever read "This Wheel's On Fire?" It is Levon Helm's book about his own life and the career of The Band. In it he makes some good points, such as Robertson getting writing credit for numbers like "Chest Fever," where a big chunk of it is solely Garth Hudsons work. He saysRobertson exploited the rest of The Band and cashed in on it, then brought the end about when he was the only one who wanted to stop. It's a good book.

To make things more complicated, not only every guitarist achieves his own sound through his playing technique, also the different guitars can put a slightly different colour (or call it voice) to the result. @britturner: Yep, i see you know what i mean. Some people think if they only buy the same guitar and the same other equipment they would sound like their idols. But this is not true. Every musician has his own sound (at least the better ones). The Jazz Guys knew this already a long time ago. Miles Davis sounds like Miles, any other Player - even with Miles original instrument - will sound different. Even so with Jimi Hendrix, Jimi Page, Jerry Garcia, Santana etc. 1 note is enough to recognize.

I guess in the end Robertson had trouble with the Band members as there were copyright issues that involved those who truly wrote the Band's music. It seems like Roberson got the best of the authoring rights of the music. Other members claim he took advantage of them and the situation. If this is true I find it very unfortunate for one member to take advantage of others...
