I first encountered Roy Buchanan's music in 1989 or so. The Alligator albums were a real treat! Someone asked me who I would like to be able to emulate if I woke up tomorrow being able to play guitar. Roy Buchanan was one of my top three (Foree Wells was another, and Duane Eddy was the other).

Saw Roy 37 times, Had dinner with him one time at MFP's in Rosyln NY.A master like no other...but the coldness in the way people banter about his death is disheartening.Regardless of how he passed, he was a tortured soul, who took US AWAY from OUR troubles everytime he picked up an AXE.Lets all keep comments respectful to his memmory....he desserves no less.PEACE

I met him in Perth Western Australia about 18 months before he left us. My friends and I made our way thru some doors(20th century security right?) at the Concert Hall and found ourselves in the bands dressing room. they pointed us to the green room were I sat one on one with him for 30/40 mins just talkin' about our favourite beers and how we hung out to which album etc then we spoke about the show which piece I liked etc ..So accomodating. polite, with that long laid back drawl...He could have easily flicked of this skinny little fan-boy in the 1st 10 seconds, but now I have a life experince I'll treasure forever...

If someone spoke in a coldness tone to me about Roy Buchanan and how he died .... they wouldn’t discover a kind of coldness they never knew....... he was murdered by the Police in Fairfax County , Virginia and I pray .... that a Coldcase is opened on the true cause of his death !!!$

From Allmusic: "Master guitarist Roy Buchanan elevates his already astronomical musical standard on his third Alligator release, HOT WIRES. With his searing tone, fluid runs, screeching harmonics, dynamics experiments, and grab bag of scratches, wails, and noodles, Buchanan's Fender often sounds less like a guitar than a channel for highly articulate alien intelligence. As usual, Roy has backed himself with some of the finest blues and rock studio musicians--including guitarist Donald Kinsey.

I've seen the video of Don Mare playing his "Nancy" bridge pick up. The tone is definitely there. Quite an achievement for him to have found its source and been able to duplicate it. Makes me wonder about the Les Paul sound on Hot Wires. Roy was known for being an unreliable source of information about himself. Great player though. I was really upset when he died. I couldn't even listen to his music for a long time.

If you like this, look into You're Not Alone by Roy. It has this incredible mix of trippy Pink Floyd style rock, with the same blues inspired hard rock of this album. It came out 10 years earlier, and it holds his most impressive stuff in my opinion.

very good idea - I will check out his bio - why didn't I think of that ? One thing I do is true - he did have problems with the Baltimore police and I'm pretty sure he died while in custody .

I have no official info, I am just a fan, a rather ardent one, I believe his memory should be pragmatic, in the sense that people should not "speculate" that cops killed him, or whatever.If he took his own life, such a tragedy is staggering...but having seen him, spoke to him..my experience was that he was multifaceted....uhhhh, and therefore...ANYTHING could have occurred.READ HIS BIO..it's cool....teach kids about him..peace

In "Hurriganes medley" middle part is named Roy On Flashtop and sounds quite a lot like Flash chordin'. And that song is made in 1973 by finnish rock band Hurriganes. Can anyone explain this?
@ironpirites9 жыл бұрын
Nice catch. I am looking into this. I haven't compared the two pieces, but when I listened to "Roy on Flash Top" I thought Roy Buchanan was playing. Albert Jarvinen must have been influenced stylistically by Buchanan. The title of the tune suggests that. Jarvinen really has that feel and phrasing of Buchanan, but not the same shrill Tele tone. By 1973 Buchanan was a fully formed guitar stylist. He tightened up his presentations when he was with Alligator records and made some great albums, like Hot Wires before he died, but the tools were all in the tool box in the early 70s, in my opinion. Interesting though. I wonder if Roy heard the Jarvinen piece and stole some licks, or stole them back.

Yea but he couldn't play with his teeth (smile) that's a joke folks. Some people can literally become part of what they're doing. Roy was one of those and a shape shifter. He could become a guitar and then he would speak. Take the guitar away and he was just an old country boy. Give him a guitar and he was a giant.

i love how you’re shitting on those guys and calling them “effects pedal shredders” when during this period roy was using effects pedals, you can literally hear the delay and chorusing on the alligator albums and see/hear him using pedals live during this time you shitting on “shredders” is funny especially when you hear roy do the crap at 12:33 and hear him try to play fast and it just comes out as sloppy noise, lets also not forget whatever crap he’s doing in flash chordin because its just him making noise through most of it 20:51 is absolute garbage, i dont know what possessed him to do that shit but its crap compared to other stuff he’s done

@sprucetree4912 жыл бұрын
Just awful! It's stuff like this that kept him back. His guitar is buried in the mix and the backing band sounds robotic. And putting a piicture of a Gibson guitar on the cover screws him image wise. Roy was the ultimate Telecaster jock. There should have been a butterscotch Tele on the cover. This record takes something unique and tries to turn it into generic blues. Even worse than Fat Poissum's sticking 80 year old bluesmen with heavy metal sidemen.
@michaelellis77874 жыл бұрын
Over a long and often interrupted career [he had to give up music for a while and cut hair to survive], Roy had many styles and sounds, this is the commercial one which comments indicate is still much appreciated. I prefer the hard edged "live" recordings, but still deeply value his vast range of skills and innovations.
