Remember this. There are new guitarists year after year, all with their own individual techniques, but there is really nothing new, that's never been tried or never been done. There are only new guitarists, who rediscover all that has come & been done before them.

It's long been a staple of Spanish Guitar and Mariachi (which descends from it). Roy Clark was very much a student of the world. I have no doubt that had he wanted to, he could have performed Bach's harpsichord compositions on the banjo.

I grew up watching Roy Clark on TV every weekend and never really comprehended his greatness, it wasn't until the last 6 or 7 months that I 'rediscovered' Roy and I then remembered how much I enjoyed watching him as a kid. The man was simply the greatest to ever pick up a stringed instrument and play it like it like no one imagined possible. RIP Roy I only wish I could have met you to thank you for the music you inspired in me.

Clark is one of the guys I think of every time Rolling Stone makes a list of "greatest guitarists of all time" and put all the Baby Boomer 60s rock guitar players at the top. Hendrix, Clapton, Page, and Richards would faint if you asked them to play this. According to RS, there were no jazz, country, or classical guitarists in the 60s. Hendrix may have been the best rock guitarist of THAT time, but he wasn't in the same league as the true virtuoso players of the era.

@@kruptoons And your point is...? I'm a guitarist. Not a guitarist of this caliber, admittedly, but a guitarist nonetheless. I know professional guitarists, and I know for a fact that any guitarist worth employing would be able to teach themselves this song within reasonable notice if the gig demanded it.

His strumming is just so divine to listen to. He may not be playing this piece traditionally, but I think this version of it is just so emotive, thrilling and edgy. I like the bite that the pick adds to it. It feels like a form of rock I've never heard. I feel such a powerful wave of conflicting emotion that washes over me when he plays those chords midway through the song.... Hoping I can strum like that one day! Wrists of an athlete, that guy had.

+Richard Gustafson Do you remember any of the jokes he told? I remember when I went to see Elvis in 76 that he had a comic that opened for him named Jackie Kahane. He did a joke about how the women in the audience had every album, magazine, 45 record, and had seen all his films and TV specials, yet were still saying to each other as they waited for the show to start, "I wonder what he's going to look like?" He also did some jokes about how we always would yell "I'm coming" to the phone when it was ringing and it was far away. That joke means nothing today of course, but it got laughs back then.

The second best part of this (other than Roy's incredible guitar work) was watching Tony and Jack break character at the end. To get both of them to do that just tells you how incredible that small performance was. RIP Roy

I've never been a musician, but I've always loved so many different types of music. And I always (not so much these days) had an above average hi-fi setup to appreciate the music. Back in the late 70's and 80's, all the high end hi-fi dealers would use recordings by Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucía, Roy Clark, John McLaughlin and others to demo the systems. Because their tones were so pure it made the amps/speakers etc sound even better than they may have been :) You can hear the perfect tones even in this TV clip. Loved the Odd Couple but don't recall this episode so thanks for that too !

I thing Roy was the better of the two but not by much, mostly in his warpspeed strumming. Now I have to go find the vinyl for both him and Tommy So I can listen to them at work on systems I will probably never be able to afford. Roy always struck me as a phenomenal guitar player who wanted to be a comedian but as an entertainer was one of the very best.

Man...I've seen a lot of things on guitar. Even Guthrie strumming 32 notes like it's nothing, but this is such an impressive, musical way to use that. My wrist can barely do 4ths...let alone what Roy does in this video...And it was 1975...jesus fucking christ.
