sexyblackman123 Yuup. We got it. Recently switched my main to Roy a few weeks ago because my style is more close-combat. It's been good so far, but I just need to get my skill up.

I have a little thing that I like to do with Roy. At around 25% when down through stops linking into jabs or up tilts if you expect your opponent to jump after the throw, shorthop sourspot upair. They will lose their jump but suffer no knockback. That means they are going to have to air dodge, attack, or do nothing. All three options can be punished very hard if you just shield or spot dodge. Then you can get a partially charged forward smash. Since your opponent is going to be around 35% at that point if you're near the edge they could be dead. Roy's down through is comparable to Robin's in it's amazing lack of knockback. At 0% you can get jab into regrab and at 10% you can get one or two up tilts depending on weight. There's also the down through to Up-B, but that's not really that good. Up-B has too much base knockback so you only get a little percent with no chance at a follow up. When fighting against a Roy always remember that Neutral-B has NO end lag what so ever. It's like Ganondorf's Up-Smash and is used as bate. Also remember not to air dodge after a down throw if you want to live past 30%. Roy's Up and Forward tilt, Dash Attack, all smashes and specials, and Up-Throw can all kill. If you're at high percents it becomes a game of don't get touched. Roy's aerials (bar Down-Air, which can kill off the top) don't kill until very high percents or off stage though, so you're fairly safe in the air. Roy's worst matchups are Falco and Villager. Mario can be trouble because Up-Tilt will string for a while since Roy falls so quickly. Link can be difficult because of his options in forcing an approach. Easy matchups are Mewtwo and Rosa as Ryo said. Mainly because they are super light and very easy to hit.

Everyone thought marth was low tier as well, then what happened? Mr. E and MK Leo actually took the time and learned the character. Now Marth is sitting at I believe 14 on the current tier list and is a very tournament viable character. I believe Roy is the same way. People just need to experiment with him because you never know what works until you try everything. Don't be so focused on the opinions of the top players and go try stuff out on your own. I think if more people experiment and learn more matchups, Roy could definitely be a high tier character. People focus too much on the downside of Roy and all the other current low tiers. Yes his approach options suck, but who says you have to approach with him all the time? I play really defensive and make my opponent approach me, make a mistake and then punish with a combo. I do this with Roy (my main) and Mario (secondary) and usually land top 5 in my little local tournament. My point here is don't judge a character because of what top players say or what the rest of the community say about the character. Go try things out for yourself before you decide on an opinion.

It is true that people should try playing the characters more often before judging just by tournament results. However, Marth's not the best example, as he really wasn't good back at launch. He received a huge amount of buffs throughout the game's lifespan.

He doesn’t have enough guarantees as higher tier characters, he’s a fighter who relies heavily on mix ups and reads, and in Smash 4’s metagame that just isn’t enough. Which is why you see some Roys get JVed by Fox and some Roys JV3 Cloud or Bayonetta.

Hey MSC I invented a new Fox combo a few days ago which I have named the caliber combo/cal combo (that's my new name that I've been using) it consists of an up tilt to a footstool at 30-50% then a n-air lock into another up tilt footstool Nair lock, then finish it with a double u-air at higher percents and a weak up tilt at lower percents into an auto-cancel u-air, u-air which sometimes kills. Percents differ with wait and it is a di follow 50/50 on floaters or characters with good air mobility. Hope you enjoy, and remember, it is the CALIBER COMBO!

This is why I love this character, his spacing is sort of bad but it's still intimidating because once you get hit or grabbed you're in a really awful and pressured situation and Roy can capitalise on that pressure to get reads and counters in. Giving him a better dash grab won't do much and his recovery should be bad since that's the point of his recovery and character

Having a mediocre approach while not having any means to make the opponent approach you is kinda tricky to deal with as Roy, your disadvantage state suffers from that, too. But he is really explosive once he gets in like he´s not gonna let you get away. Top 25 is too high IMO but he´s solid.

Right before Ryo takes the stage, when you try jab to dash attack at high percents the opponent can enter the spin animation. When in this animation you cannot tech on the ground or platform (I believe you can tech on walls though). This turns jab to dash attack into a true combo when the opponent gets the spin animation.

I've dabbled with Roy some lately and he feels like Little Mac with a sword: in-your-face, fast-paced combat. But you need fantastic, slippery movement to approach your opponent. I'm actually glad Ryo's stuck with Roy for so long. He used to be a Little Mac player and trained Sol, so he really knows how to play these sorts of characters.

You can also do n-air 1 to f-smash. You need to hold down on the left stick when you jump and do a c-stick n-air for it to work, as well as time the c-stick n-air so that it auto cancels. It’s pretty useful. If they shield a well spaced n-air 1 and try to grab, they get smacked.

You missed quite a few combos. A lot of Roy's down-throw into up-tilt combos still work at low percents. One thing I do a lot of is grab into up-tilt twice, then up-smash or up-B. With a good followup this can do some crazy damage. It can be difficult to pull off on the smaller fast-fallers, though, but it's pretty much a death sentence for characters with large hitboxes. Roy's off-stage game is also pretty effective, or if nothing else, fun as hell. Sometimes, after knocking another player off, I'll just dash off the stage to edgeguard and then just keep pressure on the opponent as they attempt to recover. Doesn't always work, especially against characters with really good recovery, but landing an off-stage sweet spot fair at mid to high percents usually seals the deal.

Roy is one of my mains but I still think hes bottom tier, his recovery is horrible and he's a fast faller. His neutral isn't that good either. He just has so many weaknesses.

+Kaleb his recovery having super armor actually makes it a pretty good because he's one of the few characters that can recover high without getting hit out of his move. It's not great but his recovery ain't bad either. Being a fast faller is a blessing and a curse. Roy's combo food but he can do stuff like frame canceled nair and confirms off of air hits because of it. Neutral can certainly be a struggle but I feel Roy more than makes up for it with killer offense when he's putting on the pressure.

As a Roy long time Roy main, my BIGGEST gripe with Roy are his overall landing lag issues on most if not all of his aerials. Especially Dair and Blazer, holy shiet its horrendous. Ironically Blazer is my favorite kill option. If it just had the same armor frames midair as it does launched from the ground I would cri tears of joy.
