I grew up listening to Elvin, Max, Blakey, Philly Jo--the hard-percussion school as they say. Roy deserves to be mentioned with them. He is truly one of the all-time greats, and his 7-decade resume proves it. I saw him back in the late 90s when he was still a young 76 and he just kicked ass.

George Neidorf : My wife and I saw him about a decade ago and we still talk about it. At one point, he took just his high-hat stand to the front of the stage and mesmerized the entire theatre audience with it. He is probably the coolest musician I have ever seen. And what vitality! He was in his 80’s and you could feel the force in him.

Lee is a true improviser - never ever resorting to licks or repeated phrases. Players like Lee are at the whim of their current situation and circumstances. It takes bravery and integrity for him, when he’s not feeling the situation, to take a solo with space and wait for the ideas. If they don’t come, he stops playing. That’s a true improviser. If he wanted, he could’ve resorted to the vast vocabulary he possesses but he didn’t. A player with integrity.

One of the greatest drum solos I think I've ever witnessed, so unique, that sound is otherworldly and just plain badass Agree with other comments about the band not gelling though, nothing worse than a non listening, over comping, overly loud guitarist, single handedly they can ruin a band, as evidenced here

This a live recording, It gives not the least idea of how things actually sounded on the bandstand. Whilst you are more than welcome to your viewpoint, it is simply that. The players are clearly enjoying themselves. Had Roy Haynes been as pissed off as you evidently are at the excellent comping, it is unlikely that he would have produced such a 'plain badass' solo.

Amen. I think the band sounds great. Everyone is dancing together in beautiful simultaneous counterpoint and synergy. The balance is a result of the way it was recorded. I've got a really great app on my phone that measures tempo. It is amazingly reliable. When I read you post I decided to measure the tempo. You are correct, it does speed up, but not by as much as you suggest. It starts off at about 126 bpm, but speeds up during solo by the guy with the 'fro to about 132 and again during the solo of the first sax player to 138. It then stays there to the end of the song.

I'd actually argue that the bassist is the real culprit here. Especially when Konitz starts soloing. Poor Haynes has to pull on the reins a bit which causes him to rush himself.
