People only remember the end of his career which is sad. I heard Darren Woodson say that Roy was the best defensive player he's ever seen. The league had to change the rules in the middle of his career to stop him.

Hes the reason there's the horse collar rule when he did it on T.O. and broke his ankle when the eagles went to the super bowl the same year

@@llmfdoomf5127 And. When he was playing it was legal. It doesn't take away from how good he was in his prime. As a matter of fact ball carriers would of rathered been horse collared than get hit by him coming down hill. There's videos of receivers and tightends literally scared to go over the middle because of Roy's presence.

The problem was the rule changes and so coaching staffs trying to turn safeties into what they are today. Trying to make him what he is not, a modern day covering down field type safety. Roy had great coverage on tight ends, slots etc, in fact was probably the best at it. His only job when covering deep was just to help the corner, and he was a monster at reading the run and everything in front of him. A playmaker. That type of safety no longer exists, but back then, typically you would want a safety that excels in the things Williams excelled in. Unfortunately the ideal football safety is no longer allowed in the nfl. Which is why you have qbs like dak Prescott for instance, who passes tons of simple passes far in front of safeties. You couldn't make a career on those passes back then like you can today.

Actually he didn't get exposed. In interviews over the years S Keith Davis has admitted that those plays that Roy was blamed for was actually his fault. He was the one that got burned. Both times Roy only tried to come help and they wouldn't have happened if he didn't allow the redskins to fool him and left his Moss open. Roy saw Davis screwed up and left his zone to help but he got there a little too late. In the Roy Williams documentary, Davis explains how Roy took the blame for Davis failure to read the play properly.

I remember when Roy Williams was drafted the biggest concern was how long he would play football. He wasn't shy about the fact he didnt see NFL career as something he wanted to do long term. His talent was so good teams over-looked that on draft night. Overall, I found Roy Williams career disappointing. His early NFL success has expectations high but I never felt he fully fulfilled those expectations.

I think he only had Woodson for 2 years. He made 5 pro bowls and was considered the best safety in the NFL for 5 years in a row. Really he should have made the pro bowl and gotten 1st team all pro his rookie year also, I mean 99 tackles, 5 ints, 2 defensive tds, 2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, and 4 tackle for losses. Yet didn't even make pro bowl. Lol so he should have 6 pro bowls in a row.

he was my favorite player and the only jersey I ever asked for. And the reason why I loved football even more. But Goodell came in to the league in 07, and weeded out the old school safety position, and hard hitters. NFL stopped drafting them also. Fortunately for Lynch and Dawkins they were at the end of their careers, and Taylor died in 07. So all that was going to be left for Goodell to weed out was Roy Williams. Schemes were forced to change. If it wasn't for Romo trash oline having Romo having to break a hundred tackles a game just to get a throw off. Football would have stopped being exciting for me and I would have stopped watching a while ago. But since Romo is gone, and there aren't any insanely hard hitting safeties, I've cared less and less about football since 2016.

You can thank the 3-4 defense with no legit NT Dallas insisted on fielding for years for his demise.

He was good for 4 yrs. After teams figured he couldn't cover he was trash. Oh!!! He also started the "horse collar" tackle rule....

@@DC4L99 Darren should be a Hall of famer, he could play all positions defensive back , safety, was great in coverage and could have played Line backer, was great at the blitz

He was actually great in coverage for his position, tight ends, slots and half back coverage. The problem is that his position no longer exists except in name only. Phillips changed up the scheme and played the scheme that started becoming what is now the main scheme for safeties. And so Roy had to cover deep often which was not his position. Williams is a playmaker safety not a coverage first safety, a playmaker safety are the best to have because they do everything and are all over the field. Unfortunately you can't have them anymore. he's the biggest reason why they became the #1 defense.
