Although I was a Gunner, I was part of Battery MT Section. Whilst on exercise in Germany, we had gone to the rear-echelon in our Stalwarts to re-supply. Coming back into location after last light we spotted a gully with an overhanging tree, which we thought would ably assist us when "Camming-up" next morning. We dutifully got a brew going and afterwards got our heads down for a well deserved kip. It is custom & practice for 1 gun to fire off a round at 1st light to awaken everyone and let the enemy know we would be ready for them. Imagine our surprise to be awoken by a 105mm Abbot SPFG firing about 10ft above our heads. What tree? Fresh trousers all round.

+CBTinstructor You can't be serious, 1 gun to fire to wake you up FFS, the British army and especially the GUNNERS are not amateurs and I've never heard the Abbott called a SPFG
