Love your son. He is a real gourmet. He reminds me of when my daughter was young. We lived in Germany & traveled extensively. She too became a young conneseour of fine foods.

We did not- these were all complimentary and included with the cruise fare. We did eat at their specialty restaurant (Chops Grille) one night, however: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpuTiIycpbODh9U

You can ask for multiple appetizers, entrees or desserts (which is actually what we do 😋) There is no extra charge.

Is the food different generally for shorter cruises? If so, how?

Shorter cruises (i.e. fewer than 7 nights) usually means one fewer formal nights when there are better food, and definitely no lobster night.

There was a lamb dish and a beef dish that both looked a little blue to me. I’m sure a good vet could have brought them back to life.

Yeah we asked for a medium and that was what came out. Our server did ask if we wanted it replaced, but since we had ordered multiple dishes we said no need. It's never a problem though with Royal or any other cruise lines if you tell them you didn't like your dish they're happy to replace.
