The classic 350 wins, for me: aesthetics, robustness, all iron, no plastic, it looks like a two-wheeled tank. The motorcycle of a lifetime.

It does look like it should last forever, it is very well made and the finishes are holding up well. My only concern is all of the gizmos and wires stuffed into the side panel 😱 I suppose that's the price of progress. These things make the bikes more efficient and more reliable, right up to the point where one of them stops working and then you are going nowhere 🤷♂️ Apart from the electronics, I would indeed expect the rest to last forever ( with care taken ! ) Deiotarus. The Meteor JUST edges it for me because of how it makes me feel but both bikes are wonderful to own and worth every penny of the asking price ! Thanks for watching and commenting Deiotarus 👍🏻 ER

I sold my Meteor to buy a chrome red classic. No regrets as the classic looks and sounds better. It has the X factor when opening the garage door the Meteor never had for me. The Meteor is however the most comfortable bike I have ever had.

Hi Stoic, yes, it is very subjective which bike one prefers. I preferred the looks and sound of the Classic but the Classic never made me feel the way the Meteor does. I think the Meteor really surprised me with how good it was ( I got it very early, before there were many reviews, so I didn't know what to expect of it ) whereas when I bought the Classic I already expected it to be good, because the Meteor was. So it was not really the Classic's fault, just that the Meteor had already completely won me over by the time I bought the Classic. I hope you continue to enjoy yours and that you don't get the sticky speedo issue 👍🏻 Cheers, ER.

I just watched this for the second time. I bought the Classic living in Nevada and having lots of dirt roads that sometimes turn rough or into ATV or 4WD trails. I made the mistake of sitting on a Meteor when I was picking up my Classic. That seat really fit nice. I may one day buy the Meteor as that memory of sitting on it has really stuck with me. This is the best head to head comparison of the two bikes I have seen, by far.
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Thanks preppy, the Meteor is a very relaxed ride but if you want to ride on dirt or badly paved roads, the Classic will be kinder to your spine ! I have taken the Meteor off-road and it was ok if you went slowly enough and avoided the biggest potholes but the Classic did cope a lot better with the poor surface. No reason why you shouldn't have both though, the Classic for the rougher terrain and the Meteor for nicely paved roads 😏 Thank you for your kind words and have a great weekend ! ER

Thanks James, glad to find a few people on here who also understand the magic of the Meteor 🙂 I think it has just the right cc and weight to be a fun hobby motorcycle. It is not intimidating in any way because of the low seat height and it always feels manageable. I'll probably still be able to ride it when I'm 85 ! It has just enough performance for all riding apart from motorway riding, where it is too slow for some ( and who wants to do that anyway ? ). And that riding position just makes you feel instantly at ease and ready to enjoy the ride. It is such a cracking bike, which is why I really hope that people who haven't tried one, try one. I think that if they tried one, a lot of riders would find that they really like it, even if they had never considered it before. It has something magical baked into it ! Cheers James, ER

The Meteor was the first of the 350ties I rode and was impressed by the torque of this engine … staying away from motorways, you never feel under powered. The Classic impressed me with its chassis, that it circles around corners perfectly in an old fashion way… if you get the right line it can be really fast in the twisties and shock some bigger bikes 😇 The Hunter is even better in the twisties you you wanna drive it like a race bike (brake deep into the corner - flip and immediately open the throttle), but therefore I would prefer a more aggressive engine that revs faster and has more power… The most balanced feeling I got from the Classic ( and I love the look of the Classic) ….would love to know which would be the best choice if you do occasionally two up riding and not just around the corner - more day trips or WE trips…
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Hi Sexy 😛 yes, sorry, I can't really help you with the two up thing, considering that the first thing I did with the Classic was to bin off the rear seat 😂 Not only that, I don't have anybody to hop on the back, well apart from Ruby that is ❤️🐕 On the group rides my RE dealer organises, I have seen two couples sharing a Meteor and the pillion passengers seemed happy enough. But that's not to say that a couple on a Classic 350 wouldn't be just as happy or happier. Certainly the ride should be significantly better on the Classic, as long as you avoid the cast wheeled versions. I also believe, much like with the Bullet, that because this engine is tuned for torque and not revs, these bikes don't really have too much issue with carrying the extra weight of a passenger. My best guess would be that the Classic will be better on less than perfect roads, I think the Meteor could be a harsh ride for a pillion passenger on anything other than a perfect surface. But that's just my best guess, I have no personal experience to back this up. My head says it would be better to get a spoked wheeled Classic for two up riding 🙂 Cheers SSDS 👍🏻 Garry

Great video, lovely look of both bikes, I really like your way of detailing everything about them. I am happy and feel lucky I chose to buy the Meteor over the classic, although the classic look was very apealing at first. I wasn't the price of the Meteor that did it for me, it was the feel of the bike when I sat on it... it is that switch you are trying to explain but can't surely put your finger on it, so to say. Seen many comparisons yours was the first to explain the smaller rear wheel changed the final gear ratio resulting in the slightly faster acceleration capability of the Hunter; thanks. Subscribed.
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, thank you for the sub, really appreciate it. Yes, you are right. Both the Meteor and the Hunter have the 17" rear wheel, which means that the Hunter is running the perfect gearing for the sprockets and ratios fitted. You can tell that they spent a lot of time getting the ratios well matched to the J Series engine when the Meteor came out. I commented at the time that the choice of gear ratios was spot on, extremely rare that you'll find yourself stuck between two inappropriate gears. Surprising for such a small engine and only a five speed gearbox. So it was clear to me that RE took great care when designing the gearbox for the 350s and of course the 18" rear wheel of the Classic does take the gearing out of that original sweet spot. As the Classic's engine loosens up, it's not too noticeable but certainly when the engine was new, the Classic did feel quite sluggish in comparison to the Meteor and it did struggle slightly setting off on an incline. The 17" rear wheel is definitely what this engine and gearbox were designed for, you can feel it as soon as you ride a 350 with a different rear wheel size. Cheers Nick, enough nerding out on gearing, I hope to keep you entertained in the future 👍🏻 ER

Hi Anton, thanks. It's always great to hear that one of my videos was useful or entertaining. I've had my Meteor for almost three years now and still loving it and still no mechanical issues. When you get your Meteor, just don't put up with no suspension at the rear for two years like I did 😂 I've discovered that the rear spring damper units need two or three clicks of preload before the spring is able to move freely. From the factory they arrive with no preload. So if you find the rear ride to be too harsh, just add two clicks of preload and you should find that suddenly you have rear suspension ! Lots of owners have upgraded the rear units but once they actually start doing something, the OEM ones seem fine to me ! There is a c-spanner in the on-bike toolkit and for me it was just about adequate to get the job done. Just be careful with it because the metal is quite soft and it's quite easy to round off the teeth 👍🏻 Good luck Anton. I'm sure you'll grow to appreciate the Meteor 350 as much as I do ! Exeter Rider tests a lot of different bikes but he had a Meteor for a prolonged period in the summer and he ended up desperately wanting to buy one himself ! So check out his Meteor 350 videos too if you like 🙂 Let me know what colour you end up going for and how you are getting on with the bike once you have it 👍🏻 Cheers Anton, ER.

Hi Noel, it's something a lot of testers fail to pick up on. They say that the RE 350s are just a bit too slow and gutless without realising that they are probably riding bikes with just a few hundred miles on them. These particular bikes keep on improving up to about 2000 miles, so the reviewers are rarely getting a genuine impression of what the bikes will be like, once they are fully run in. Once they have 2000 miles on them, I would say that they are just about adequate FOR ANYTHING. I never find my Meteor lacking. Maybe on a motorway, uphill and into a strong headwind it might struggle to hold a speed but fortunately I can avoid that scenario ! As much as I enjoyed the looks and the sound of the Classic 350, if there was one bike I knew that I couldn't live without, then it was clearly the Meteor. I don't miss the Classic now that it's gone but I know that I would have missed the Meteor ! Three years on and I still love it like I did on the first day. I bought it blind, couldn't test one, reviews weren't out at the time but as it turned out, it is almost certainly one of the best purchases I have ever made. It's such a special bike ! Hello, I’ve only recently discovered your channel & become a subscriber. Enjoying all your content & wanted to comment on your comparison / views between the Meteor & Classic 350’s. I have owned a Meteor Super Nova since August ‘22 & ridden 3,000 miles. I’m pleased I chose the Meteor over the Classic as it has just the right balance between retro looks & modern features (the Classic is just a step too far back for my needs & taste). The Meteor does seem to live in the shadow of its brother, which is a shame & so unjustified. I would also advise anyone buying these bikes to leave as stock & just enjoy as they are. I bought DNA air filter kit, decat exhaust & Fuel X management device, as I believed it would significantly enhance how my bike ran (I knew it wouldn’t increase top speed). It did, however, increase the noise level to the point that I had to use ear plugs! I have since returned everything back to stock & have found no change in performance. I have done other things to my bike, mainly to personalise / accessorise it which have proved well worth the money & continue to enjoy the benefits. It is fantastic to own something that has such a huge range of parts & accessories that are readily available & I hope everyone that has one of the range of 350’s gets as much pleasure from theirs as I do. Thanks again, take good care.

Hi John, thank you and welcome to the channel ! I've read comments from so many Meteor owners saying that they bought and fitted all of the mods only to find the noise or fuel economy unbearable and then set everything back to stock. RE took a lot of care when setting up this engine and exhaust combination and I've never felt the urge to modify anything about it. I like how the bike sounds, runs and sips fuel in stock form. So you are not alone, plenty of owners went down that same road, only to put everything back to how it was when it left the factory 😂 RE knows best ! As much as the Classic was a lovely looking bike, I didn't fall in love with it in the same way as I did with Buddy, my Meteor. Riding the Meteor just feels so good and so relaxing. I just love it. I agree, personalising ( but not tuning ) the bike to suit your needs is a lot of fun and almost always necessary, to a degree. Thanks John, keep on enjoying your Meteor. I've managed about 6000 miles on Buddy and I still love him to bits. And he has been perfectly reliable in that time too ! Cheers John, Garry 👍🏻

Thank you for the detail comparison of Royal Enfield Meteor and Classic. What I can conclude from your discussions and experiences of these two awesome motorcycles are: First, the Classic 350 Vintage looks outstanding, an eye catchers and looks unique. Sounds of pipe so distinct as Classic. Performance it can be aggressive to use and robust both off road and rough road and heavier weight than Meteor and as well comfortable to ride. While the Meteor 350 looks great and eye catchers as well, but not so unique, because of a bit imitations of the appearance of Harley Davidson's older designed. The bass sounds of pipe is not loud as much the same as Harley Davidson, but it is a regulated harmonious bass sound like music not drums and it is good to the ears. About the performance it serves well a "Real Cruiser Motorcycle". Not an aggressive type, but fast, calm and relaxing to ride both on road and off-road. Imagine to your self you are sitting on Grandma's and Grandpa's Vintage Rocking Chairs watching the television or sitting on the Terrace and watching on those Greener Forest and listening to the Harmonious music while rocking that Vintage Chairs. It fells good, calm and rejuvenating from the busy and buzzier lifestyle nowadays. So riding with Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is like you are riding Grandma's and Grandpa's Rocking Chairs Cruising different places with harmonious music with regulated bass while enjoying beautiful places in this world. I think that brings Royal Enfield Meteor 350 so distinct and unique in overall performance in these two bikes. Thank you for sharing the comparison, because right now, I am in the midst to decide to buy either 350 Classic or Meteor 350. Great job!

Hi Rich, what a poetic summary ! Well, I think you'd be happy with either bike, as I was. The big thing to consider, and I don't know how the roads are where you live, is that if you ride on poorly surfaced roads with lots of bumps and holes, then you should probably be looking at the Classic. I say this because a twin shock cruiser like the Meteor will always have short, stiff, rear suspension and you sit with your spine directly above the top damper mount. That means that the Meteor could be a bit harsh on your back, causing pain and discomfort. The very first thing that I noticed when I collected the Classic was that it rode a lot softer than the Meteor. That is probably because of the slightly longer, softer rear spring and the spoked rims and tubed tyres, which give more flex to the suspension. The Meteor is fine for the odd spell on a bad road but if you are going to be riding on bad roads most of the time, then I think the Classic Chrome ( or any other version with SPOKED rims ) will be more comfortable day to day. Good luck deciding. Both are wonderful bikes with loads of character ! ER.

I'm glad that you are mentioning the differences between the 17" rear wheel on the Meteor & the 18" rear wheel on the Classic; After the run-in period & over time the noticeable differences in performance between the two bikes are minimal...( I would prefer the 18" wheel myself... Why?... I'm not exactly sure... But anyways...)

Thanks Tim ! Yes, you definitely notice the higher gearing when the Classic engine is new, it needs more revs and more clutch slip to pull away on an incline for instance. But once the engine is fully run in, the difference is indeed barely noticeable. I would say that you can climb the same hill in the same gear on both bikes. When the Classic was new, I was usually a gear lower on steeper inclines, it just wouldn't pull the next gear as happily as the Meteor would. Thanks for watching and commenting Tim ! Cheers, ER

Great video and comparison. Many thanks! I have had a Meteor for almost 6 months now and initially felt it was the perfect bike for me: very relaxed, economical, easy on the eyes, easy to work on and comfortable. During the winter I only went for shorter rides, and always came back with a smile on my face. But now that the weather is warmer and the rides longer, I've come to the conclusion that the Meteor's seating position / foot peg location is just not my cup of tea. I've never ridden cruisers before and I just don't feel comfortable on the bike when travelling for more than an hour or so. All my weight is on my butt because of the forward pegs, and, as you mentioned, the suspension is quite hard, so riding on rougher roads is no fun at all. I've decided to sell the Meteor (same color as yours), which only has 1400 kms on it, and buy a Classic. I think its seating position will be much more to my liking.
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Hi David and thank you 😊 The tubed tyres and spoked wheels of the Classic definitely give a smoother ride on dodgy roads. The seat is considerably higher than that of the Meteor but if you are not short in the leg, you will be fine. Have you been able to sit on a Hunter 350 ? It’s a lovely bike with very neutral ergos. I think you should definitely consider it, if you have no particular reason not to. You might even save a few quid ! Good luck deciding and please let me know what you end up buying 👍 Cheers David, thanks again ! ER

@@economicalrides Greetings! I have tried sitting on the Hunter, and it felt quite good, although a little less upright than the Classic. I'll take both for a ride once I've sold the Meteor. There's also a 2018 Bullet for sale nearby...
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
@@davidskogley3570 Hi David, is that 2018 an actual Bullet or a Classic 500 ? I would say that the Classic 500 was the first RE to be built with acceptable quality. The bikes built before that, from the older factories, can have myriad issues. But from the Classic 500 onwards, RE really upped their game, the quality was a lot more consistent. Just something for you to be aware of. Good luck selling your Meteor and deciding what to replace it with David 👍🏻 Garry

@@economicalrides Thanks Garry! I think the late Bullets and Classic 500s were pretty much the same, with EFI and ABS, so I assume the quality is fairly good. I'm sure there's still a big difference between them and the new 350s, though. Will try everything out before buying something.
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
@@davidskogley3570 I think the Classic 500 was the first model to be produced in the new factory. Even the later Bullets were nailed together in the same factory as my PITA one, although totally different, non worn out tooling, because those Bullets were no longer of the Redditch type as mine was. If you do go for a Bullet, make sure that it’s a good one. But as you say, the EFI models were completely different to mine and had a five speed unit construction gearbox, so hopefully the retooling for those models solved a lot of the niggles with the old Redditch style bikes 👍 Good luck and stay in touch ! Interesting and useful review. I test rode both bikes recently in Bangkok. Here the Meteor is priced higher than the classic. Like you, the Meteor made me smile on first meeting. But I do think the Classic looks better, but I think that's just all the shiny chrome. The gear indicator is useful as I also could not discern the 4/5 difference with wind noise at 90kmh. Gear changes were really nice though. I found braking on the Classic was a bit weak for the weight, but maybe that was the particular bike I tried. I'm also considering the Hunter given the mad traffic here. 17 inch front tyre, 10kg lighter changes handling a bit. Though I could still filter lanes surprisingly well with the Meteor. I liked the foot position on the Meteor. Comfy ride.
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Hi David, yes, that pretty much sums up my experience with the two bikes. RE brake master cylinders are not brilliant and the power of the brakes just varies from bike to bike, it's not really model specific. Some bikes just brake better than others in my experience ! I'm not sure what the roads are like over there but the Meteor won't do very well over poor roads and potholes. You should definitely consider the Hunter. It's a bike with very neutral ergonomics, light, slim and nimble, very good at filtering through traffic. It will also have a better ride over poor roads than the Meteor. Good luck deciding. Royal Enfield has certainly given us plenty of options based on the 350 platform ! Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment David, really appreciate it 👍🏻 ER
@davidcann8788 Жыл бұрын
@@economicalrides Thanks ER and regards to Ruby. I found the Meteor seat and suspension much more "plush" than the Hunter, though my pillion passenger said Hunter was better for her. Other reviewers argue that the 19" front tyre on the Meteor should handle bumps better, so I was interested in your comments. Suspension is quite firm on the Hunter. Roads over here are about the same standard as the UK. Poor in places and inconsistent. Traffic conditions are much more congested though. Lane filtering is a must.
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
@@davidcann8788 Hi David, the relative lack of rear suspension travel on the Meteor will definitely make it less comfortable for a pillion. If your passenger can live with it, as long as you promise to avoid the biggest potholes 😛, it sounds as though you would be happy with the Meteor. I've never had to do it, but I imagine that filtering with the Meteor is not a problem either and the low seat height does give added confidence whenever you are at a standstill. As you know, I love my Meteor and would recommend it to anyone. But I never carry a passenger, so that would be my only caveat in recommending the Meteor to you. How important passenger comfort is in your case will probably be the deciding factor. If you ride more solo than with a pillion, it becomes less important. Or more important if you ride more with a pillion than you do solo. Good luck deciding David ! ER.

Gary, Of course, if choosing purely on looks, it becomes a subjective choice, and the Meteor just won't win on this count if you don't appreciate the mini-cruiser look. However, me having had(since my youth) a habit of changing my motorised transport regularly (my bank account suffering in the process !), I must say that my Meteor is the most comfortable 'bike I've ever owned (including Bonnevilles and an Interceptor in more recent times). I wholeheartedly agree with your remarks concerning the enjoyable nature of the experience once in the saddle (I'm probably about an inch shorter on the leg inseam than you Gary, inside leg measurement for trousers of 30 " if I can get them otherwise a generous 29"). Some 'bikes I've owned have given me a cramped hip feeling occasionally, but not the Meteor. (I've already mentioned this to you Gary, but should prospective purchasers of a Meteor be put off by the heel-&-toe gearchange, TecBike Parts do an excellent toe-only conversion, which I've fitted to my 'bike. One small caveat = Royal Enfield's welding of the front footrest mounting arm isn't consistent (doesn't seem they use a jig to position it). What this means is that a little bit of hacksaw/filing work may have to be done on the new mounting boss with Tec's mod. if the standard welding of the Meteor's footrest mount causes a problem with the Tec upgrade. This is explained in Tec's instruction leaflet. I have also fitted 5mm longer button-head bolts than Tec supply for the 2 linkage joints, together with nylok nuts. I was concerned about the original bolt length as the bolt thread only just reached to the outer end of the nut. I was concerned that, despite my use of thread-lok, a nut may come loose and the linkage become detached whilst riding if that were to occur. I contacted Tec about the bolt length, and they responded by saying that the varying positioning of the footrest mounting bar could sometimes mean longer bolts may rub on the engine casing. It was needed that I shorten my new mounting boss as per Tec's instructions and the longer bolts I've used don't rub on the engine casing. The original gearchange action was my only criticism of my riding pleasure (purely a personal thing. As you mention in this comparison video Gary, you find the original heel/toe lever more than acceptable). It speaks volumes that Royal Enfield's Meteor means I have I've no urge to rush out and buy a Super Meteor (or any other 'bike for that matter). Just for any readers added info. I'm a long time retired male, who rides purely for pleasure in the lanes of Hampshire, UK. I find the Meteor handles lane riding a treat : - }
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Thanks NP, I think Tec also do a rose-jointed linkage bar for the heel/toe shifter, which is probably an improvement on the standard "bent bar in a hole" solution. It's something I will look into, should my OEM shifter ever become too sloppy. So far I am happy with it and I still have another year of warranty on the Meteor, so I don't really want to replace it at my own expense just yet ( I'm economical, see ). I'm glad to hear that you are so happy with your own Meteor and I can confirm that whatever it is that the Meteor has that makes it feel so special, the Super Meteor does not have it ! The Super Meteor just felt like any other motorcycle to me, it didn't instantly speak to my soul, like the Meteor does. I quite agree that the RE 350s are perfect for country rides and lane exploring. Absolutely perfect. If you rarely venture above 50 mph, why pay more for worse fuel economy, more weight and extra performance you never use ? The 350s are adequate for most people's weekend rides really, unless they have to ride a lot of fast roads to get to the nice roads every weekend. Then their fast road weaknesses could become a bit of a drag, I appreciate that. But if you have the nice roads right outside of your door, why would you need a bike that does more than 70 mph ? Thanks NP, I really enjoyed reading about your mods and experiences. Take care and keep on enjoying your Meteor ! Oh and happy Easter ! Garry 👍🏻

Hi Darren, yes, the Classic has an old school peashooter rasp to it. It suits the aesthetic of the bike but it does split opinion. I like it, it's something different, people always turn around to see what sort of bike it is when they hear it coming. I do also like the muted bass thump of the Meteor though. When I turned up at a mates house after collection to show it off, he said he heard me coming and thought it couldn't be me because it sounded like something bigger than the 350 that he knew I was getting. So even the Meteor has an appropriate sound for its styling and manages to sound larger capacity than it is. Cheers Darren, ER.

Hello, appreciate the terrific videos. I bought a Meteor 350 two years ago to get back into riding with the plan to upgrade in time. Well, I'm not doing it. The Meteor puts a smile on my face every time I just look at it. It is a complete feel-good ride always. On occasion I do have to ride on freeways and will at times go 70 MPH for up to an hour. I am concerned this is wringing the bike's neck. I seem to recall you had considered putting a rev-counter on your Meteor. Were you able to do this, or am I thinking another channel? Many thanks!!
@economicalrides7 ай бұрын
Hi Nigel. No, you are right, I did say that I was going to fit a rev counter ( just out of interest ) and indeed I did. Unfortunately the one that I bought was wildly inaccurate and the results it delivered would have been of no use to anybody. Basically it gave me different numbers every time I went out ! Well done for remembering that I mentioned that, I thought I'd got away with it 😝 Honestly, with the electronic speed limiter AND the rev limiter, I don't think you'll harm the engine at 70 mph. The thing is, it's a single and at that speed it is revving QUITE hard and to anybody with a fair amount of mechanical sympathy, it does feel stressed. But in the grand scheme of things I am sure that what we consider "stressed" is not actually stress for the engine as it was designed. Otherwise the rev limiter would come in earlier. Doing 70 mph probably isn't going to do any damage as long as the oil level is correct, it's just, let's say, not very pleasant to experience 🙂 I'm glad to hear that you have decided against an "upgrade". I feel exactly the same way. For me, the beauty of the Meteor is that it's paid for, it ticks all of the boxes for what I need it for AND it is small and manageable enough that I can probably still ride it safely well into retirement age. I will definitely be keeping Buddy for as long as he is reliable. Other bikes may come and go but I would really like to have Buddy in the garage when I am 70+ years old and possibly feel intimidated by larger, heavier bikes. Thanks Nigel and don't worry about doing 70 mph from time to time. In theory the bike should be able to do it ALL OF THE TIME, but obviously that's not going to be very enjoyable. At that point somebody really should be looking at a twin rather than a single ! Enjoy your Meteor Nigel 🙂👍🏻 Garry

The 350cc engine in the Meteor, Classic and HNTR, despite blending well with them, was specifically designed for the meteor. The gearing ratios, sprocket, wheel size and vehicle dynamics including the chassis will not work with either HNTR or Classic as well as it works with Meteor. Which is great. And that for me is a deal breaker. The previous iphones will keep getting ios updates and work seamlessly, however, the most recent ios update will be designed keeping the latest upcoming iphone in the mind.
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Thanks Kishor, funnily enough, when I first bought the Meteor, long before the Classic was even available, I did openly praise RE for getting the gearing and gear ratios absolutely spot on for the new J Series engine. The gearing is absolutely PERFECT for the engine on the Meteor. I was somewhat surprised that the Classic then came out with the same sprocket sizes and gear ratios, because clearly it was going to be slightly higher geared because of the change in wheel size. My guess is that RE felt that going up or down a tooth on any sprocket was going to be too big a change, so they just left it as it was. But when the engine is new and not making full power, in the early days it definitely felt like the Classic struggled with the gearing, particularly uphill. It's not massively higher geared but you can feel the difference. As you say, the Meteor gearing really suits the bike perfectly, RE clearly spent a lot of time getting the gear ratios perfectly set for the new J Series engine on the Meteor platform. Cheers Kishor, ER.

@@kealanmcateer9690 😂😂😂 It could be amusing. I am not a confident mechanic but have always been able to adjust chains myself on every other bike. One of the reasons the Meteor appealed to me in the first place was because it looked like it had nice chain adjusters on each side, it looked like they would make adjustment very straightforward ( my Bullet 500 had snail cams to move the wheel which I always struggled with ). Anyway, just to be safe, I watched the official RE workshop tutorial on KZbin, showing me how to adjust the chain on a Meteor 350. So basically I was very confident that I had this job covered. I'd done all the prep, it was time to get the spanners out ! Typically, once I'd loosened everything off, I could wind the adjusters in and out without anything at all happening. Or just one side would work, so the chain would go tight but the wheel would be out of alignment. I ended up with everything loosened right off, flailing in the air and manhandling the wheel with all my strength and it still wasn't moving freely on both sides. It would always move one side and not the other. I honestly have no idea what the problem was but quickly decided that I needed to put it back how it was somehow and let the dealer deal with it at the next service ! I thought the chain adjusters were supposed to move the wheel for you. On my Meteor they did nothing. Presumably the wheel spindle on my bike is very sticky in its slot or something. Gawd knows. I've just decided that it's probably best for my nerves never to touch those adjusters again 😂 Cheers Kealan, ER

Hey Gary - its interesting what you say about the running in. My Meteor feels like a different bike now having 5500Klm on the clock. Everything is so much smoother and the engine feels like its grown in size. There are hills that I had to change down to 3rd gear for that now I sail up in 4th and holding a good speed on the motorway is also far better. In the early days my thinking was that I might have to take a look at the Meteor 650 when it arrives for that extra bit of oomph, but I don't thank that anymore. So, for those who just bought either bike, you might love it now, but it gets even better. :)

Hi Chris, yes, I've mentioned that in a few videos. People need to be patient with these 350s, they end up being a lot more capable than they feel in the beginning. I hope people don't give up and buy something bigger before they've given their 350 adequate time to make full power. The change was even more drastic on the Classic 350 because with the slightly higher effective gearing it felt incredibly sluggish when new. It wasn't until well over 3000 km that it would come up a local mountain in top gear, like my Meteor could when it was run in. I still find the 350s adequate for normal hobby riding duties. As you say, you can even do a couple of hours on the motorway if you have to, although the fuel consumption seems to increase by about 30% at those speeds 😱 I'm not saying that I'll never buy a bigger bike than the ones I have but I think it is unlikely, because it would be hard to justify. I think it would have to be a bike which completely blows me away, for me to be able to put my hand in my pocket. So never say never, that bike may indeed appear someday, but I don't expect to ever buy anything bigger or more expensive ! Cheers Chris, Garry & Ruby

That's all that matters, it's just that in this case our opinions happen to coincide 🙂 I can well imagine that somebody else with both bikes would argue the opposite case. For me it's all about how the bike makes you feel and for me, the Meteor gives me something which the Classic just does not. It is very subjective and very personal really. As I say in the video, they are both great motorcycles and I would recommend both of them to anybody. I really just believe that people should try both with an open mind because the Meteor may not be as "on trend" or "sexy" but they might end up appreciating its virtues if they actually tried one. Oh, and it's a bit cheaper too so more of an Economical Ride 🙂 Cheers Bob, you chose well 😏👍🏻 Garry & Ruby

How does the seat comfort in classic, especially for tall people,? . are there any vibration in break pedal as well as footpegs?
@economicalrides7 ай бұрын
Hi Alexander, these RE 350 engines are probably amongst the smoothest single cylinder engines you will find. Vibration is not an issue with any of the RE 350s IMO. The standard seat on the Classic is very comfortable, so much so that I don't think it is worth getting the optional Touring Seat. The seat on the Classic is good for two hours at a time, I would say, which for most people is more than adequate. Since height depends upon leg length and body length, it is impossible for me to know if you would be comfortable on the Classic. I only know that I know of quite a few taller riders who happily ride around on their Classic 350s. I would strongly recommend that you try to take a test ride, or at least sit on one, before deciding whether to buy or not. If the bike fits you and you are comfortable on it, once it is run in, I don't think you will be disappointed. It is such a characterful bike to ride, good looking, economical and reliable. It might feel underpowered to begin with but give it a gentle 3000km / 2000 miles and the smoothness, power and torque will be much improved. Good luck deciding ! ER.

Belt drive is so much cheaper than chain drive. Every 20,000 miles you have to replace 2 chains and a set of sprockets. My Sportster belt drive lasts over 100,000 miles or more.No muss , no fuss, plus if it breaks it doesn't break the cases.

Fine video. So, at first, the breaks weren't gripping but over time, they got better?
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Thanks Marso. No not really. The brakes didn't improve much at all. When new, the Classic's brakes had slightly more initial bite than the Meteor's but after a while the brakes on both bikes felt pretty similar. It seems to be a common theme with all Royal Enfields, the brakes lack initial bite. Maybe because that is safer on bad/loose road surfaces 🤷♂ But it doesn't really matter. The brakes work fine when you pull them hard enough, more than adequate. They just lack a bit of feel and the first bite of the pads onto the disc is not very sharp. Just keep pulling the lever though and the brakes work well enough, nothing to worry about. These aren't sports bikes after all ! Hope this helps ! Cheers Marso, ER

Hi RDBJr, you can also buy a Classic 350 with cast rims and tubeless tyres, they are called the "Black" versions, there are two of them. I just think that a bike with this classic style should be on spoked wheels, the cast wheels don't look right to my eyes.The spoked wheels then come with tubed tyres, not tubeless. But yes, in general tubeless tyres are better, much easier to fix punctures at the road side ! Cheers, ER.
@rdbjr52 Жыл бұрын
@@economicalrides yes, regarding laced wheels and their visual appeal, I agree. I have a white Harley Davidson Road King Classic. It has the laced wheels with the wide white wall tubed tires. I really like the look. That said, I always fear that I will have a flat while on the road. Which, will easily turn into an “all day” and costly event. I’m in the process of converting the laced wheels with tubes to cast wheels and tubeless. I’m rather sure that I’ll not approve of the look-over the laced wheels, but, so it goes! Thank you for video. I really enjoy riding my Meteor. I live in Wyoming. The interstate speed is 80 mph, but that didn’t influence my decision to buy the Meteror. @@rdbjr52 Hi RDBJr, yes, when you are out riding in remote areas, the advantages of tubeless tyres become very appealing. A stray screw or nail is not going to ruin your day if you have a patching kit and some sort of inflator. I think that's the reason why RE does two Classic 350s with tubeless tyres. This video has been very useful to me because I have never ridden a Meteor but absolutely love my Classic 350. We have, at last, had a couple of glorious Spring days, here in Somerset and I have been for rides on the Classic and also the CB500X this week. So good just to be out there. Is the all black engine/exhaust harder to keep clean compared to chrome? How durable from stone chips is the black paint on the engine/exhaust? Are the spoke wheels harder to clean compared to the cast alloy wheels?
@economicalrides11 ай бұрын
Hi, the black finish is really easy to clean and super durable. Also it looks cooler and less “try hard” IMO 😉 No stone chips to report ( and I have been off-road ) and with a wash and dry, it still looks brand new after two and a half years. But neither did I have a problem with the polished finish and chrome rims of the Classic. The black finish is probably easier to keep looking good but with regular washing and drying I think both finishes should last a long time. And yes,spoked wheels are harder to clean. Very good comparison, I learnt a few things. I have had my Meteor for 18 months now and I am about to road test the classic, I will keep both because as you say there is something special about the Meteor. I disagree on the heel toe gearchange, I fitted the tec bike parts conversion and it's so much better, I also swapped the tripper for a tacho, other than that the Meteor is perfect for me. I suppose I am interested in the classic for it's looks more than anything, but the Meteor is a hard act to follow. I wonder do you ride both equal times or do you favour one?
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Hi James, well the standard heel and toe shifter is still working well for me, so I have decided to leave it on there until it becomes an issue. As you say, there are better engineered upgrades available but I see no need for one at the moment, I never miss a shift with the OEM one. Because of the channel I pretty much ride the two bikes alternately, they both do a similar amount of miles over the same period of time. So I definitely don't favour one over the other, it's just that the feeling the Meteor gives me is just really unique, so it is the one bike of the two which I would keep if I could only have one ! I'm sure you'll enjoy the Classic too, particularly for the way it looks and sounds. Good luck on the test ride - just leave your wallet at home ! 😉 Cheers James, ER

I have tried both as well. I fully agree with all your observations! To me the riding comfort is superb on the Classic, and ok on the Meteor. The ability is higher on the Classic, and the feeling of stability in curves as well. Performance is quite lousy on both... but this in fact makes them very fun to ride! 😅 You have to work with them to keep up with traffic, and on the 80 km/h roads (everything except for the highways) they are amazing! I really liked the heel and toe shifting. Works much better than I expected! And the gear indicator is really useful, especially since there's no rev counter. The Classic is on offer with a 500 CHF discount, so the price is the same... How about riding with a pillion? Any preference there?
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Hi Mikael, the pillion seat is almost the same on both bikes. The main factor in pillion comfort will be the suspension. As I've documented in the past, the cast wheels and tubeless tyres of the Meteor do give a firmer ride than the spoked wheels and tubed tyres of the Classic. My Classic was always a fair bit softer in the suspension that my Meteor. Having said that, I have a lot of viewers who frequently ride their Meteors with a pillion without issue. If you add some preload at the rear, the Meteor's rear suspension does soften up quite a bit ( see my most recent video ). I don't think your passenger would have any complaints with either bike, once you set the suspension to be a bit more compliant. I'd say that overall the Classic will be slightly more comfortable for the passenger, just because the general suspension comfort is going to be better. Cheer Mikael, ER

@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Hi there, no that doesn't sound normal at all. You might have a slightly noisy fuel pump but that makes a constant whine sound rather than a hissing sound. That can happen from time to time when the fuel pump is new and then it often quietens down over time. I've had the fuel pump run loud on my Classic 350 and Himalayan at times but now they both run quietly. Try to compare your bike to somebody else's Meteor. That would be the easiest way to find out if there is something unusual about your bike. If your bike is clearly making different noises to everybody else's, then obviously the dealer should be able to hear the problem and set about diagnosing it. Good luck, ER.

I love that you didn't bow to pressure and just take the Royal Enfield Classic 350 as the winner. For me, the Classic wins on all levels, but to be fair, I never rode a Meteor. I'm just not a cruiser guy, and even the Classic was a big departure from my 32+ years of sports bikes. Being a Shrek-like creature, I was shocked at how comfy the Classic is. 6'-4", 235lbs and it seems made for me - as it does for my two riding pals who have one, but are normal sized beings ;) I did just put in the HItchcock's "decat" midpipe, and it does sound nicer, feels nicer, and is a good match for the DNA 2 kit we fitted last year. Once I put on the touring seats in black (Halcyon Grey comes with brown) it not only looks better, but feels better. I'm honestly shocked at how much joy a little 350 single has given me (us). I knew you'd pick the Meteor - I've sensed that you prefer it over the last year. Maybe one day I'll head over to the dealers and try one on. Hi pals ! No. I will always be honest. I'm not bothered about upsetting people. I think in the end, the people I care about having here will understand why I do what I do 🙂 It's not as if the Classic is a bad bike at all, just that for various reasons it hasn't surpassed my Meteor in my affections. It's still objectively a really great motorcycle and objectively, as I state in the video, probably the better bike for me. Let's face it, I was always going to upset one faction or the other, unless I went for the cop out solution and said that I liked them both equally. But that's just not my style and it wouldn't have been the whole truth. I think most people here are interested in my truthful opinion and not a fake one. Ultimately it is subjective in this case. For me, for various reasons, I have a real love for the Meteor, whereas I just like the Classic 🤷♂ Other people's views will vary, I'm just telling it as I feel it 🙂 Honestly Scott, before I saw the PR photos of the Fireball Yellow Meteor I was not a cruiser guy either. I've never had one and never understood why anybody would want a bike whose handling is deliberately compromised. But I just thought that the yellow and black Meteor looked so cool and more importantly at that time I had the money saved up to be able to buy it, so I went for it. I wasn't sure that I'd get on with the cruiser stance but as it turned out, I loved it right away and continue to do so. You really should have a go on one if you get the opportunity. The way you sit in the bike just feels so good and just puts you into a chilled state of mind right away. I've heard from taller folks that they actually feel like they have more room on the Meteor because their feet are out front and not down below them. Not sure about that personally, being petite, but just thought I'd mention it to you ! It's good to hear that you like your new silencer, maybe you could send me a short clip sometime so that I can hear it ? 😊 Now you've got me all excited for Xmas already and it's only April Scott ! Such a tease ! Whatever it is, thank you so much and it really wasn't necessary 🙂 Jumping off bridges is not on the agenda for either of us by the way, too many folks and pups who need us, so scratch that idea right away ! We're here for the long haul, like it or lump it 😛 Ruby says thanks and apologises for the unnecessary motorcycles cluttering "her" video. ❤🐕 She is such a cutie and is so proud of her little fox, she takes him outside into the garden every chance she gets. Hi brother, I own a CL350 & am thinking of decating it without changing the stock silencer. I have a few questions if you may:- 1) I have heard that putting free flow or decating(as in your case) changes air/fuel ratio & tends to reduce low end torque. Did you notice any difference in the fuel economy or performance? 2) I'd like a little louder thump, will decating & using stock silencer suffice?(free flows esp. at higher speeds are unbearable) 3)You mentioned the stage 2 kit, so you're using the stock air filter? What changes did it bring? 4) Did you notice missing/misfires or pop farts as they say while deaccelerating? 5)Could using free flow or removing CatCon harm the engine? 6)Have you used the fuelx/powertronic/powercommander to fix the fuel/air ratio, is it necessary to have as they say? Hi there, well I've certainly heard of taller folks being happy on the Meteor. They say that the slightly forward foot controls give them a much needed stretch in their legs. But it's extremely difficult to know without sitting on one yourself, so you should definitely try to find somebody with one and kindly ask them if you could try it on for size ! The trouble is, you can be 6 feet tall because you have very long legs and a short body, or 6 feet tall with normal length legs and a longer body. It really does depend upon where the extra length is, so it's not really possible for me to give a definitive answer. All I know is that I have had a couple of taller riders on here who have told me that they feel like they have more room on the Meteor than on the Classic. I hope this helps. It would be great if you could find somebody there who already owns a Meteor and then you could try it for yourself. That would very much be my recommendation ! Cheers DDP ER.

Hi there ! You will enjoy the low seat height of the Meteor but the suspension is quite harsh, so if the roads are in a bad condition you might be better off buying the Classic because it does ride considerably softer. So if a low seat height is important, I recommend the Meteor. If you are riding on poor road surfaces, the Classic will give you a more compliant ride but the seat height is considerably higher. Meteor seat height is 765mm and the Classic 350 seat height is 805mm. Have you considered the Hunter 350 ? That is actually the bike RE designed for city riding and it seems to be a really fun bike, everybody seems to love it ! Good luck deciding. All three RE 350s are great bikes with a lot of character. Cheers, ER
