I've just purchased my Royal Enfield Meteor 350 as my first bike, I am 27 years old and have just passed my A2 licence here in the UK. I've only been riding the bike for just about 2 months, but I'm over the moon with it. I was worried after reading reviews following my purchase that the bike was underpowered that it would feel unsafe. However, the bike is amazing. It has never made me feel un safe. I did my first long ride last weekened from where I live in Chester over to Sheffiled to see my brother. It handled the motorway section perfectly cruised happily at 70mph. Then I reached Snake's pass, and I did nothing but smile for the 20 minutes. The 350cc single gave me so much joy and made me so happy. Honestly, I think I will keep the 350 meteor for the forseeable. It's the perfect bike, and I plan to tour it in the future. I might step up to the super meteor in another few years, but we shall see. Great review and happy riding.

Hi James, glad to hear that you are loving the Meteor 👍 I‘ve had Buddy for three years now and I can’t see myself ever selling him. He does everything I need and I‘m always smiling and relaxed, any time I take him out. What more could I ask for ? I‘ve had bigger, more expensive bikes but for me the Meteor is the sweet spot. It is also going to be the perfect bike for when I am old(er) and frail(er), because it is so easy to manage and relatively hard to drop. Enjoy your time with the Meteor James. Even if you do one day move onto something larger, I am sure that it will always remain a bike that you remember fondly. It‘s just that sort of bike ! Cheers James, congratulations on your excellent choice 👍 Garry

Another excellent video with quantified & balanced opinion. I do believe that the vibey zone that the bike has, will settle down to less vibes if the bike is used more in this zone with top quality oil, however when it's a once every now and again the engine is unlikely to bed-in at these higher speeds, however this would be subject to a longer running in period initially than Enfield would suggest which I am looking forward to engaging in once the bloody crappy UK weather improves! Great video!!

Thanks Stevie, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, a bike which is used to certain speeds can become attuned to those speeds over time. It’s why I’m eager to do the odd longer trip at higher speeds now that the official running in period has passed. Now my Meteor needs to get used to higher engine speeds more often, I’m with you there. Although doing 90kmh on the motorway here is not particularly hazardous, it would definitely be beneficial if 100kmh could also be in the “purry zone” some day 😛 Thanks for watching and commenting. I’m a prisoner to the weather too at the moment, probably until the New Year by the look of the forecast. Oh well, I got the beverages in. If I can’t ride at least I can party 🥳🥳🥳 🤪🤪🤪 Cheers Stevie, ER

😆 I love the tour since it represents well how I usually view places I ride to. It's just a break and the ride is the highlight. I also think you did great explaining the capabilities and how personal preference dictates how capable a bike is at doing something. Like you, I prefer secondary roads no matter the motorcycle I ride. I've been riding enough and am comfortable (crazy) enough to rip my 150cc mini motorcycle on the US Interstates at 60mph (95ish kph) if I don't have another option. Recently took it on a 1200 mile tour and had a blast.

Haha, thanks David, a man after my own heart. I’m more about the ride than the destination, as admirably demonstrated here 😛 Yes, I’ve ridden a 125 which would barely hit 90kmh going downhill on the motorway before. You just have to be thick skinned enough not to worry about how fast everybody else wants to go. At the end of the day that’s their problem. I’m not trying to stop them from overtaking me if they are in such a hurry. If you look at it like that, with the right attitude, then of course the Meteor is motorway capable. Thanks for your comment, it’s nice to know that I am not alone in how I view things 👍 I’m glad you enjoyed the video, thank you so much for watching and commenting. It was a big effort but I had promised this video for a long time and you were all so patient and understanding that I just knew I had to make it happen. Also I was genuinely interested myself to find out if I felt comfortable riding my Meteor on the motorway and as it turned out I DO ! Great video, love your dry sense of humour, made me chuckle! I've taken my Meteor on the motorway (uk) for a 40 mile journey and was expecting to be stuck in the lorry lane at 60mph. How very different was my experience! Once 60mph was reached you could feel a small amount of vibration through the pegs but the bike was happy to continue and by 65mph the bike was running lovely and smooth. The journey was spent between 65 - 70 mph and although a little buzzy the engine was by no means strained or running at maximum rpm. It was a delight to ride and pleasantly surprised by its capabilities particularly when mixing it with the Kamikaze pilots (aka white van man) and jostling for lane position. As you say it all depends on what you feel happy or confident with speed, I don't like motorway journeys either and like to get them over with asap. Much prefer to bimble along on the back roads at 50-55 mph and enjoy the journey. I believe that Enfield class 5th gear as an overdrive and that the bike is happy to cruise at maximum speed of around 70mph all day in 5th. Look forward to your next outing and recordings of it.👍

Thanks Jonathan, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, the Meteor is powerful enough that it CAN be used on the motorway. Whether or not you feel confident doing so is a personal thing, as is how fast you choose to cruise. I think I saw in the video about Meteor development that the engine was designed to run at 60mph all day if required. That’s definitely fast enough for the motorway if you are happy running the bike at that speed. Again, a personal choice. Here in Spain I feel safe enough at 90kmh but admittedly our motorways are much more empty than yours. Thanks for watching and commenting, hope to have a new video for you soon. Stay safe and watch out for those white van men ! Cheers 👍

Hi Chad, Thanks for dropping by ! In my experience, as I mention in this video, the Meteor feels really comfortable at 90 kph, so about 55 mph. Doing 60 mph feels as though the engine is working harder and is no longer purring, like it is at 55 mph. I've no doubt that the engine can do 60 mph all day but to me it is starting to feel a bit thrashy at that speed. At 55 mph it feels as though both bike and rider are relaxed and in their element. Good luck with the break in period, hopefully you'll soon have it behind you. Cheers Chad ! ER

😀 Never mind, there will probably be further Premieres in the future 👍 The live chat was enjoyable but it gets shut down shortly after the video finishes which is annoying. We could have happily chatted for another hour or so. I’ll put a three hour test card at the end of the next Premiere video, that way we can keep the chat alive for longer. That’ll teach ‘em ! I’m glad you enjoyed it SB and I’m very glad that it brought back some memories for you and the missus to rekindle at your leisure. On trips like this I realise that I am more into the journey than the destination. I spent most of my time in Granada looking forward to getting back on the road again. It was good that I needed some footage of the city really, it “forced” me to actually spend some time there and appreciate how nice a city it is. I will return but next time will take a hotel room which will give me somewhere to dump all my clobber before venturing out. Just need to find a dog sitter for that one. The fact that the Meteor was easily able to hold my chosen speed in fifth gear and up some very steep hills was the clincher. If I’d been up and down between fourth and fifth trying to maintain speed, I think I would have come to a different conclusion. But as it turned out, for me personally it is motorway capable, it does all I’d ever need it to do on a motorway 👍👍👍 Thanks for watching, commenting and encouraging, it means a lot to me to have a celebrity KZbinr “on my books” 😀 Cheers SB !

Another KZbinr recently reviewed the DNA air filter and intake bracket he added to his Euro V Royal Enfield Himalayan and noted both improved pick up and top speed. Looking forward to trying it myself on my Meteor. I'm like you - not on the bike to race it, but rather to enjoy it - however having an extra 10 or so kph and improved 0-100 acceleration would not be a bad thing. Thanks for your interesting videos!
@economicalrides
@economicalrides 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, let us know how you get on and whether or not it's a worthwhile upgrade. I don't think you'll increase the top speed of the Meteor, as I mentioned in another video, the speed is being electronically capped at just under 120kmh. I think the air filter might enable the bike to hold more speed up hills and will obviously generate some more induction noise. The only thing is, it will almost certainly make your fuel consumption worse. If more air is getting in, the ECU will add more fuel to compensate, so it will be interesting to see the trade-off between improved performance and worsened fuel economy. If the top speed remains the same, I don't really see the point in tuning the Meteor. Like you say, another 10-20 kmh ceiling on the top speed gives you more options on fast roads but unfortunately I don't think tuning the Meteor will affect top speed at all. Just how you get there and how much fuel you use. But if you do get one, please come back and give us your feedback because clearly we're all interested in improving the bike after the obvious Euro 5 strangulation measures ! Thanks for your compliments and you are welcome, I'm really enjoying having a KZbin channel and creating content for you all ! Come back soon. Cheers 👍🏻

As you described, 90/100 kmh is the most comfortable, the meteor will do that all day long. Since i drive allot in the Netherlands where the top speed on the highway is 100, it suits me just fine. Only the weather is not allowing me to drive much lately, winter is coming 😭
@economicalrides

A lot of people seem to think doing 120 on the motorway is obligatory. It isn’t. You are allowed to do 90-100 kmh if you choose to. People are free to overtake you if they need to go faster. I used to ride a 125 on the motorway and it would just about hit 90 flat out and would drop to 80 on big hills. Compared to that the Meteor is more than motorway capable, at least for my requirements. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and hope you get some dry riding weather soon Ekim. Hi DD, no, the Tripper app in the Spanish App Store is still total pants. I see that in India they have a new version where you can drop pins as waypoints. This is absolutely necessary for a trip like this. Our version of the app only allows you to enter towns as waypoints, you can't navigate to a specific part of a town. I suppose they are still awaiting Apple certification for the new version in Europe, I've no idea. The Tripper app DESPERATELY needs an update in Europe. As it is, I can't plan my routes with it at all. If I enter Madrid as a waypoint it will probably get me to Madrid but I want to plan rides with the app, i.e drop pins on the roads I want to ride and then let it plan a route. I really hope we get a Tripper update soon because I'd love to use it, I think it is potentially a great feature !

@@ekimandersom4478 Yep, although if they update the app and allow me to drop pins as waypoints I would be inclined to give it another chance. Then let Google come up with a route to combine the roads I selected and bring me back home again. For Sunday rides into unexplored areas of the map it would be brilliant. If it also worked that is. We need that app update and then I’ll reassess it. Cheers Ekim 👍

About your Navigation consternation. I had a similar experience a couple of days ago but in a friends Fiat 500 with no Satnav. We ended up using Google maps on the phone and while we did arrive at our destination we taken through housing estates, doubling back and returning on a different route, it was crazy. It was the first time I'd used Google maps in the car, previously I've only ever used it on foot. I later did some digging and Google gets data from other phones on you're route, it then seems use that data to constantly re-route you onto a 'better' route if traffic slows or gets heavy meaning it bounces you all over the place just to keep you moving. Looking back even though we crossed Nottingham we were never actually stuck in traffic. It proved hugely frustrating. I'm hoping I can do something about it in settings. By the way, I've got the fly screen and will be fitting it today, As promised I'll give you my feedback about what difference it makes as soon as I've had the chance to test it.
@economicalrides
@economicalrides 3 жыл бұрын
Yep it was extremely annoying, never had such a problem with Google maps before. As you say, they are probably collecting movement data from other phones to try to figure out where traffic is flowing fastest and then want to „intelligently“ put you on the fastest route. The thing is, I was supposedly 2 minutes from my destination when they totally re-routed me and took me completely out of the city. Not exactly eco friendly because of the extra fuel it cost me. Unfortunately I didn’t know Granada‘s roads at all and couldn’t form my own opinion about whether or not I should listen to Google, I just had to do as I was told. It feels as though they are still experimenting with dynamic routing at the moment and maybe they don’t get it quite right all of the time 😛 Looking forward to hearing your opinion on the fly screen. At 55-60mph on the motorway, for me, the wind blast was minimal I‘d say ! Thanks Nick, glad it’s not just me Google has a problem with 😂👍👍👍

So is the capping of the HP and the top speed all because of Euro 5? I read that India is quite stringent in their emissions as well. This must be a limitation of a 2 valve single cylinder engine - where higher reving would result in more particulate in the exhaust gasses. Anyway. I think top speed is fine. I'm tempted, the Stellar Blacks are on sale for $5000 CDN!
@economicalrides

Hi Matt, we're all speculating about that but I think it is probably to comply with some current or future legislation in some market or other. I've no doubt that some company will find a way to modify and re-flash the software eventually and then for sure we'll find out what RE were doing and the probable reasons for it. In practical terms it doesn't bother me at all, but I get the civil liberty aspect. It's not nice being forcibly restricted in this way. I think the Meteor would probably do 135kph unrestricted, so we're only losing about 17kph at the end of the day. Wait until they start restricting new 12.000 EUR sports bikes, then the sh#t really will hit the fan ! At least with the Meteor we are only "missing out on" about 17kph. The 118kph the Meteor manages is more than enough for the type of riding most buyers will do with it. Heck, as I proved in this video, it will even hold 90-100kph up a very steep motorway in top gear. So for me, it can do everything. I just prefer riding mountain roads at 70-80kmh personally ! Have you had a test ride on a Meteor yet Matt ? If not, doing so could seriously damage your wallet ! Everybody seems to agree that you are smitten after just one ride. The Meteor has something special about it and just feels "right" from the first moment. Oh and the fuel economy is amazing. I love riding for days before having to fill up again. With most other bikes I had to fill up before EVERY SINGLE RIDE just to be on the safe side. The Meteor feels more like a car in that respect. Thanks for commenting, I'd recommend a test ride if you are unsure. Just make sure the bike fits you ok. After that I'm sure you'll be ordering one 😉 Take care and come back soon. Cheers 👍🏻

@@economicalrides I too love the idea of not having to fill up very often. It's rarely the cost of the fuel with a motorcycle, but the pain of actually fueling. My Piaggio 350 uses about 4L/100km on average. The tank is 12L, maybe slightly larger. But I haven't taken it up to 300km on a tank yet. Filling the Piaggio is also fussy in terms of overfilling and making a mess ;) The dealerships have many Meteors in stock right now, and will probably put more on sale as the year winds down. I hope to find a sunny day and do a test ride soon.

@@mattlorenzi5606 Exactly. My aversion to filling up is not spending the money, just the hassle, especially on a motorbike where you may only be buying 10-15 litres. It’s just a nuisance. I can comfortably do 3-4 Sunday rides on a tankful and that just makes me smile 😃 My mates fill up before every ride or sometimes on a longer ride DURING the ride, just to be sure that they can make it home ok. They call my bike the camel 😂 I hope you get to do a test ride soon, just make sure you are in a position to buy first, otherwise the waiting could be torture 😉 Good luck, stay tuned for more videos and please let me know how your test ride goes. Stay safe Matt. Cheers 👍

I love this bike but I think you confirmed that it will be that bit too slow for me. I have to do a bit of UK motorway and dual carriageway riding and I need something that can maintain 70 a little bit easier. Maybe the scram can do that just about? Pity because I prefer the look of this one.
@economicalrides
@economicalrides 2 жыл бұрын
Hi letni, yes, unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend the Meteor for your use case. That is asking too much of it. I think the Scram will just about do the job but it will be tight. On a stormy day with a headwind I think that too might struggle to hold 70mph. I don’t know for sure because I‘ve never ridden one but that would be my best guess. Do try to get a test ride on a Himmy or a Scram to get a feel for how much it has in reserve at 70 mph and how relaxed it feels at that speed. If it’s still too close to the limit, you probably need to look at something like the Interceptor 🙂 There should be a Meteor style 650 twin coming soon, so you might prefer to wait for that. I think that could be exactly what you need ! Cheers, ER

@@economicalrides I wanted to move away from the faster heavier bikes. I'm fine with 70 but slowing down to 50/55 might be a bit too much. I had those days on the 125 before I got my 600 and 750. The scram might just be that bit more capable for it. Should scrape 70 most motorways I'd imagine or near as damn it. It's just dropping into the 50s that would make my motorway journeys a bit frustrating. I like the scram, just not as much as the meteor.
@economicalrides
@economicalrides 2 жыл бұрын
@@letni9506 Yes I get that. Small bikes are a lot of fun and confidence inspiring. Less money tied up in them too ! I'm hoping to get a go on a Scram soon, because it is I bike I would be interested in having myself. I think you should be ok with one of those but a lot depends upon how it feels at 70 mph and if it still has something to give. The Meteor will maintain speed uphill and into a headwind if you drop down a gear but then you really do feel as if you are thrashing it. In general, your instict is right. I THINK the 350s would frustrate you on the motorway. Have you managed to get a test ride on either bike yet ?
@letni9506
@letni9506 2 жыл бұрын
@@economicalrides Not yet. But I probably won't get near a motorway so might still be no wiser 😀 I used to have a ninja 250 and that was fantastic as regards just the right amount of power and weight. But not so much into the sporty look these days or riding position. If I never went near a motorway I'd get a meteor tomorrow. But unfortunately I have to do a bit of the M1 and a couple of uphill dual carriageways. I could get some other older bike but I like Royal Enfields offerings and the fact I can afford a brand new one is very appealing.

@@letni9506 HI letni, yes, I know exactly what you mean. When I first started thinking of downsizing on my bikes I very nearly bought a Ninja 250. I actually managed to get a test ride on one. I was very impressed, really enjoyed it, so nimble and it felt like it had enough in reserve when I took it up to 120 kmh on the motorway too. I think that is just the right amount of power to enable you to get away with any kind of riding. The RE 350s fall just a tad short of being "good" on the motorway IMO. They will just about do it but you are right on the outer edge of their capabilites if you do. The thought of being able to afford a brand new bike which nobody has ever thrashed and has 3 years roadside assistance and warranty is indeed appealing. I think you might have a Scram in your future but do try before you buy. I think it will probably be ok for what you need ! Oh yes, I did hear of people developing a new drop in cam for the 350s. Obviously the speed will still be limited electronically ( 72 mph or so ) but if the alleged power boost is actually real, the engine could possibly hold 70 into a headwind or going up a hill. So maybe in the future that could be an option. Maybe you could mod a Meteor just enough to enable it to do what you need. I'm not up to speed on how far this product has progressed because frankly I'm not desperate for more power myself and I'd prefer to keep my warranty for the full three years before going mad with the performance mods ! Cheers, ER.

Very good, little bit there for everyone. Have you measured the speedometer against a GPS to see if there's a discrepancy in the speedometer. Why I ask, is when you were traveling at 90Kph on a 100 kph zone, passing cars seem pass you very comfortably!
@economicalrides
@economicalrides 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, not much discrepancy in the speedo. 120 kph equates to 118 by GPS. The reason people are passing easily is because NOBODY obeys speed limits here and they were probably all doing 120 kph in a 100 limit 😃 Thanks for watching and commenting, glad you enjoyed the video LMST 👍 Take care, ride safely and come back soon ! Hi again BD. Panniers are a real problem at the moment. I'm still looking for something which doesn't require a metal frame to be mounted to the bike but I really haven't found anything which looks like it might work. The search continues. I'd love to be able to take the Meteor to do the shopping from time to time but obviously I need some luggage capacity for that. Totally agree. Motorways are best avoided but after this ride I know that the Meteor will do it if I can't avoid the motorway one day. That's all I was hoping for and the bike proved that in an emergency I can ride it for three hours on the motorway without being a nuisance to other traffic. Box ticked !

You live in a very beautiful part of the world. I always thought I lived in the prettiest part of God's creation. I live in the U.S. (SE Ohio across the Ohio River from West Virginia and not to far from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive, You'll have to check these out. But after watching some of your videos I have come to realize there is an awful lot of beauty in this world.

Thanks Gene. I’m sure there are many places much nicer than here, all I would say is that here we get plenty of dry days and the roads tend to be quiet and in very good condition. Having lived in the UK and Germany previously, I really do enjoy the biking opportunities this area offers. I am sure where you live is very beautiful too, I have seen images of the area. Thanks again for watching and commenting. As well as informative videos I always try to share some nice rides on new roads to keep things interesting. As soon as the weather allows I will be back out filming again 🙂 Ride safely and take good care of yourself Gene. Cheers 👍 ER.

I need 68 mph consistently to be ok on my highways. Is that possible to maintain?
@economicalrides
@economicalrides Жыл бұрын
Hi Red Wings, unfortunately not. Any kind of gradient or headwind and your speed will drop. Also with a 72 mph top speed, running at 68 mph is thrashing the bike to death. A 411 like the Scram or Himalayan should just about manage it though, otherwise you need to be looking at the 650 twins really. Cheers, ER.

55 mph on a busy U.K. motorways is going to be hardwork
@economicalrides
@economicalrides 3 жыл бұрын
Yes maybe. Germany too. But it can be done, you are entitled to do 55mph if you so desire. I think you just have to rise above the aggressive, always in a hurry attitude of some road users. I won’t let others dictate my speed, they are free to overtake me any time they like. If you keep your wits about you I’d say it’s possible. You just need to have the right attitude and not go out of your way to annoy anybody. You are entitled to be there at 55mph, whether others like it or not. You just need to develop that thicker skin 😉 But that’s exactly the conclusion I came to. For some, those happy to do 55-60mph, it’s motorway capable. For those who need to be doing 70-80mph it isn’t. I used to HAVE to ride a 125 on UK motorways and that would just about hit 55mph on the flat. Up hills it could drop to 45mph so for me the Meteor is motorway capable by a mile ! Thanks for watching and commenting Mark. I get your point but the Meteor is legally and practically motorway capable with the right attitude applied. It obviously won’t be for some people but is for me. Stay safe and come back soon. Cheers.

Hi JT, sorry, no, the VIDEO did ! KZbin editor messed up the video quality so I had to re-upload again, set up a new Premiere and delete the old ( now pixelated ) video. So your comment got deleted along with the video, unfortunately. This is the NEW video :) These comments will remain and if you signed up for the Premiere on the deleted video, you will need to set a reminder again for THIS NEW video. Sorry but KZbin gives you no option to replace one video file with another. All you can do is delete the whole video and all comments to that video and upload a new video and the comments start from zero again. I would never delete such a nice comment willingly but since the video got ruined, I had no choice but to delete it and upload it again. Sorry :)
