I have a 2012 RE 500 C5 with the matching sidecar. It is tons of fun, everyone loves it, people always stop what they are doing and come over to ask questions about it. It is a total blast to ride like Jay said. I get a solid 63mpg riding myself and my son from Farragut through the Tail of the Dragon/Cherohala Skyway Loop. That is great in my book for all the long uphill climbs and turns that are involved. It is a super practical bike that will get a ton of use, you won't be winning any races though. That is A-OK with me.

There is a guy in Seattle who rides an old green BMW with a sidecar. His chocolate lab often rides in the sidecar. The best part, the dog wears old school leather goggles. Coolest thing ever!

I'm a pinstriper for a local royal enfield dealer (M&S Cycle, and restoration), and I really enjoy working on these bikes. He restores classic british bikes, and selling the Enfield has been a nice addition. great vids Jay, I look forward to every one.

*Back in the mid-80's I met Jay Leno but had no idea who he was. He was fairly famous at the time having done a couple of movies after making a name for himself with his stand-up comedy routine. If you didn't know who he was you would think he was just an average guy, that's what I thought anyway. I had broken down on an LA freeway when he, and only he, pulled over to help me. He actually had tools with him and got my car running again, for FREE! I offered to pay him, even though I couldn't afford it lol, but he refused any money for his time. A couple of years later when I was watching The Tonight Show there he was, I said to my wife, "OMG IT'S THAT GUY!" lol. He really is a down to earth, regular guy's guy.*

Ive had a stroke and have balance issues, ive thought of a trike but the expence is beyond my fixed income. I can swing a sidecar. Ive had my 68 flh for 39 years and am having separation issues. Ive got my balance back about 75 percent. Im just struggling with the thought of not being in the wind again. Any input anyone?

I had one in 1963 650 Triumph 6T with a massive child adult sidecar They are the most exhilirating things to ride We drove on the left hand side of the road in England and were climbing over the sidecar on left hand turns in order to keep the wheel down, going around the corners as fast as we could Everybody had an event, first time driving one On Fella went up a wide flight of town hall steps Great fun Very glad I had one when they were on their last days

I always advise beginners to leave the solo motorbike behind for the first year. And always remember that if you think you can do it, it will be dangerous. But as Jay Leno suggests, you don't have to prove how fast you are (in rainy weather you're the winner against the solos anyway). And the fun starts before you risk losing your licence.

Thanks Jay, I put an old velorex 562 on one of the new style Triumph Bonnevilles that I was not riding alot and now it's my favorite. I recommend takeing your time learning to ride it.

Jay, either this sidecar is idjit proof or your a natural. I'm picking the latter as a sidecar is an odd beast at the best of times. My first sidecar was built by me and my mate in 1981 on an XR500A cause his mum didn't want him to ride pillion. Rode that all around the south island nz during the school holidays. Great memories. In the early 70's we knew an old guy who owned a BMW motorcycle dealership. He swore there was an old lady at the factory who hand painted the pin stripes on the tanks and fenders of the BMWs.

That really does look like so much fun. And Jay is right, you don't have to have that pressure of looking like Mr.Cool or racing. Anyone who see's you with a side car realizes that you are just out for a good time and take relaxed ride. Which really the whole point is to enjoy yourself anyway ...not feel like you have to look over your back and want to race everyone etc etc and all that goes with it.

About 35 years back, I laid down my 1969 Norton Commando on a corner with my wife on the back. She never would ride again after that. Recently, I've been talking how much I like those Indian made Enfields and she brought up sidecars. Sure glad I came across this video, as that may be the way to go to get us both back on two ( OK three) wheels.

I used to own an Ariel "Red Hunter" 500 single. Many of the cross country desert sleds were of the 500 single variety such as the AJS and Matchless. The 500's are plenty tough enough for the so called back country. They have slower piston speeds, are quite a bit better on fuel, and should haul the side car anywhere you may want to go roads or not. I like the Ural also, but many had problems with the second drive differential early on. It's a great idea. Change the gearing a little, install some knobbies or universal treads and head off road with a grin. The 500 singles are great rides, reliable engines, and British to a fault, hand built by Indian craftsmen. I all own one in the future. Plenty of time as I am only 68 this year!

For 15 years my everyday transport was a 350cc Bullet + Watsonian ML1 sidecar. I drove it all year round. Handled great on mud, ice, and snow. Only stopped using it a couple of years ago - engine needs complete rebuild having done 165,000 miles. I'm very tempted to get one of the new Bullets with electric start and fuel injection :-)

I have a Continental GT 535 with the electric start and FI. Fantastic bike! The new Bullets are 500cc and have ABS. You should get one...happy riding!

If you haven't bought an RE till now get the interceptor 650, great value for money motorcycle which has one of the smoothest RE engines till date.

Hi Jay me from India . Thanks for praising our bike . In India it is commonly referred to as the BULLET and it is definitely an icon of India. But sadly Royal Enfield does not make sidecars anymore in India but there are Bullet mechanics who do fabricate sidecars in India but they do less than decent job and using those are more than just hazards.

I rent an Enfield in India. Single. Without a sidecar. The engine is weak and gearbox is awful. It also began vibrating on the speed above 80km/h. But it was fun to ride it for a week. For Goa it's ok)

I never rode with a chair and often wondered what it would be like. A friend rode an AA sidecar unit like that for years and it sounded like fun. The idea of "FORGETTING" it was with you sounds terrifying - that could be terminal. I'm so glad you include bikes like this in your collection, well done sir.

I used to own a RE Bullet 500. It was a lot of fun to ride at city speeds. Vibrated horribly at highway speeds and max speed was around 85 mph depending on the wind. Ended up selling it and getting a Triumph Bonneville T100.

I hear vibrations can be reduced by respecting the break in period. Though I don't think it will vibrate any more than a Harley... btw I would have recommended the re interceptor over the t100. Same bike, better transmission, thousands less.

I am the proud owner of a Royal Enfield, sans sidecar. A 2013 Forest Green B5 Bullet 500. To me this bike would be wasted on a sidecar. It handles so great by itself, and doesn't really make enough hp to handle a sidecar other than in town anyway. Also the frame (what frame ha ha) just isn't strong enough for a sidecar. This does not mean I don't like sidecars, I do. And someday I may own one. But it will not be an Enfield. It would almost certainly be a Ural. They are beautiful, old school just like the Enfield, but strong enough for a side car on long trips. They even have 2 wheel drive.

well actually the new EFI 500 cc engine is preffered by people who wish to opt for a side car. The 20th century bullets had thump and weight so they could handle a sidecar. But now EMIISION STANDARDS& Regulations have to be met so the company had to cut off the weight and powerdelivery . 350 isnt the best option for a sidecar rider.

I have a Triumph Bonneville with a cozy bullet, absolutely love it, wouldnt goe it up for anything else. No one gives me a hard time about having a slow bike on rides because guess who's carrying their junk. It's fun as all hell flying the chair too, especially when I have a cute passenger I'm driving home. And oh my god, you'll pull a crowd when you put a dog in there and cruise down main street.

Thanks Jay for another great show! I myself have two Soviet rigs - a 1957 and a 1967 - copies of "cutting edge" German 30's technology! Great for use in cold temperatures or even in snow. I run mine about every other day, milk runs and stuff for the family - but with a little style. Rural Pennsylvania is a perfect place for my rigs!

Jay: I am looking at a Royal Enfield with a Kozi sidecar. The rig pulls to the left on braking and acceleration, it looks like the alignment is not correct. Urals have a toe-in of 3-15mm, a lean out of 1-3 degrees. Are there similar alignment guides for the Royal Enfield/Kozi combination? I would appreciate your help with this. Regards/ Dan Casaburi

Are thease sidecars available in the UK I need to find a cheap sidecar for my assistance dog to fit my Royal Enfield Himalayan, which will be my only form of transport, everything so far is really expensive. Having Autism/ADHD and PTSD and having been through hate crimes and domestic vilence due to that and being Transgender. I am a blue badge holder and am using the last of my Personal Indpendance Payment (Disability Benifit), having had no income for several years (due to bad UK gov policies) and being awarded additional mobility component at Tribunal. It's getting urgent as not fair on my Dad running us both around him 80 next year. Any help would be amazing.

My 2009 Royal Enfield T-bird is not "oil tight"! The engine "sweats" oil that accumulates around the combustion chamber & other areas of the engine. Only to find its way under the engine to form a thick dark crusty layer. Which later yields its substance that drips in small quantities on the floor. The spot where the bike's regularly parked gets marked with a small patch of oil. No tray required because the seepage is miniscule. And thus the "sweating" a real nuisance. Which makes it a must to clean the bike after or before a ride. The other unwelcoming feature is the drop in horse power in warm or hot weather conditions. (Or if regularly used as a daily commuter). And they're not exactly built like a gun. Eg., the chassis fractures & breaks off at a certain mid section. I have two spots where my RE's frame is welded as a testament to the fact. This may not happen on American roads. But is a regular feature here in India. We do love the RE for its other benefits. But these mentioned ones should have been addressed long ago. And poor Jay is oblivious to these. Just thought you should know about our own version of the Harley.

My dad has a motorcycle with sidecar, sitting in it its much more fun than riding on the back! Its a steib 501, so its a bit bigger but its still pretty cramped! It does pull on the steering wheel

Check the internet for a product called the Carberry anti vibration plate. Fitted one to my friends 500 classic. Vibration still there but to a much lesser extent and comes in much later.

Oh look at that Enfield, seems so modern as I had a Honda bike back in the 1970's, even had the rubber knee pads on the tank that looked so much like the Enfield, just the pistons weren't so big on the Honda. As I look at it some more, I think Honda were trying to rip off the look of the Enfield....but the Enfield from 40 years earlier???

It kills me to see jay wear his helmet wrong. The top of the eye opening should be at or slight above his eyebrows. Will also help cover that huge chin. I know the last part is asking a lot of a helmet.

Had a couple of sidecars. A 1960 BSA A10 with a sidecar made from an old fairground ride car and a 1979 Yamaha SR500 with a Jawa 350 sidecar. Had lots of fun on both. I have a 2007 Triumph Bonneville which I wanted to put a sidecar on. ....but can you find them now..no. Unless you buy a new one from from Watsonian for £6-7000 [$9000]..What..the bike cost lest than that.
