Rani Parvati Devi Deskit Wangmo, born on May 1, 1934, into the royal Khangsar House of Lahaul, married Ladakh’s titular King, Kunzang Namgyal, in 1950. She became the first woman MP from Ladakh in 1977, supported by the INC and Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, and won by a margin of 2,877 votes.
A devoted social worker, she led Leh's Welfare Extension Project in 1958 and later founded the Namgyal Institute of Research on Ladakhi Art and Culture (NIRLAC) to preserve Ladakhi heritage.
